Molecular typing of Histoplasma capsulatum isolated from infected bats, captured in Mexico.

The present paper represents data on the genetic polymorphism of 13 Histoplasma capsulatum isolates recovered from infected bats randomly captured in the Mexican states of Morelos, Puebla, and Oaxaca. The polymorphic DNA patterns were analyzed by two-primer RAPD-PCR (random amplified polymorphic DNA-polymerase chain reaction) method. To amplify the fungal genome by PCR, the following primer arrangements were used: 5'-AACGCGCAAC-3' and 5'-AAGAGCCCGT-3'; 5'-AACGCGCAAC-3' and 5'-GTTTCCGCCC-3'; or 5'-AACGCGCAAC-3' and 5'-GCGATCCCCA-3'. A common polymorphic DNA pattern of H. capsulatum was revealed

Observations on the transmission and development of Toxocara pteropodis (Ascaridoidea: Nematoda) in the Australian grey-headed flying-fox, Pteropus poliocephalus (Pteropodidae: Megachiroptera).

Findings in the Australian Grey-Headed Flying-Fox, Pteropus poliocephalus, have elucidated the life-cycle of Toxocara pteropodis. In adult bats, other than parturient females, larvae were found only in the livers. Following parturition, larvae were recovered only from mammary glands up to 2 weeks post-partum. Developing larvae were found only in the intestine of young bats from the age of two days onwards; there was no evidence of pulmonary migration. The evidence indicates that juvenile bats commence passing Toxocara eggs in their faeces at about 2 months of age and expel the worms spontaneou

Reservoir of St. Louis encephalitis virus in Ohio bats.

Inoculation of the big brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus) with a small dose of a St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) virus strain isolated in Ohio indicated that the big brown bat was susceptible to infection. The virus was maintained in the bats through hibernation (70 days), and the bats developed a viremia within 4 days of arousal from hibernation (105 days after inoculation). A field survey of 390 big brown bats and little brown bats (Myotis lucifugus) conducted in 5 regions of Ohio during 1979 to 1981 revealed a SLE virus-neutralizing antibody prevalence of 9%. Cohabitation of natural caves and abando

Broad permissiveness of mammalian nectin-4 orthologs for morbilliviruses: a notable exception in dolphin nectin-4.

Morbilliviruses utilize signalling lymphocytic activation molecule (SLAM) and nectin-4 as their major cellular receptors and exhibit distinct host specificities despite sharing common receptor usage. While species-specific differences in SLAM have been extensively investigated, the contribution of nectin-4 to morbillivirus host range remains poorly understood because nectin-4 is highly conserved among mammals. Here, we systematically compared the receptor activities of nectin-4 orthologs from human, dolphin, bat, dog and seal for representative morbilliviruses, including measles virus (MV), ce

Modeling optimal deployment strategies for Nipah vaccines and monoclonal antibodies.

Nipah virus (NiV) is endemic in Pteropus bats across South and Southeast Asia. Spillover into human populations results in usually fatal disease with the potential for human-to-human spread, which has led to NiV being classified by WHO as a priority pathogen. NiV vaccines and monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) are in development. However, it remains unclear how these medical countermeasures could be used most effectively. Here, we consider three different outbreak scenarios: limited, short-lived outbreaks as seen almost annually in Bangladesh and India; livestock amplified outbreaks as seen in Malay

Comparative Genomic Analysis of Two Bat Poxviruses in the Genus Vespertilionpoxvirus.

Poxviruses are large double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) viruses that cause important human and animal diseases, including smallpox and mpox. Poxviruses have also been identified in diverse bat populations; however, their potential for zoonotic transmission and adaptation to other mammalian hosts remains poorly understood. Poxviruses encode numerous immunomodulatory proteins that contribute to virulence, immune evasion, and host range. In this study, we performed a comparative genomic analysis of two bat-associated poxviruses belonging to the genus Vespertilionpoxvirus: hypsugopox virus (HYPV) and ept

Re-emerging Marburg virus disease in Africa: spillover ecology, geographic expansion, and surveillance vulnerabilities.

Marburg virus disease (MVD) is re-emerging across Africa as a high-consequence zoonosis shaped by expanding ecological suitability, repeated spillover, and uneven surveillance capacity. This review synthesizes current evidence on the ecological, epidemiological, and operational determinants of contemporary Marburg virus (MARV) emergence. We conceptualize MVD as an ecological-emergence system produced by interactions among reservoir-host biology, environmental change, human exposure, health-system readiness, and mobility, rather than as a series of isolated outbreaks. Recent detections in multi

One Health Insights From Pteropus medius: Nipah Virus Spillover, Microbiota, and Antimicrobial Resistance.

Pteropus medius is a major reservoir of Nipah virus (NiV), a zoonotic pathogen responsible for recurrent fatal encephalitis outbreaks in Bangladesh. Human infections are primarily associated with consuming raw date palm sap contaminated with bat excreta. Beyond viral spillover, growing evidence suggests that bat-associated microbiota and guano are potential reservoirs of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), contributing to the environmental dissemination of resistant bacteria and resistance genes. This narrative literature review examined the relationship among NiV spillover, bat microbiota, and AM

Bat sarbecovirus WIV1-CoV bears an adaptive mutation that alters spike dynamics and enhances ACE2 binding.

SARS-like betacoronaviruses (sarbecoviruses) endemic in bats pose a significant zoonotic threat to humans. Genetic pathways associated with spillover of bat sarbecoviruses into humans are incompletely understood. We previously showed that the wild-type spike of the rhinolophid bat coronavirus SHC014-CoV has poor entry activity and uncovered two distinct genetic pathways outside the receptor-binding domain (RBD) that increased spike opening, ACE2 binding, and cell entry. Herein, we show that the widely studied bat sarbecovirus WIV1-CoV is likely a cell culture-adapted variant whose progenitor b

Novel Bat Adenovirus Closely Related to Canine Adenoviruses Identified via Fecal Virome Surveillance of Bats in New Mexico, USA, 2020-2021.

Bats host a wide range of viruses, including several high-profile pathogens of humans and other animals. The COVID-19 pandemic raised the level of concern regarding the risk of spillover of bat-borne viruses to humans and, conversely, human-borne viruses to bats. From August 2020 to July 2021, we conducted viral surveillance on 254 bats from 10 species across urban, periurban, and rural environments in New Mexico, USA. We used a pan-coronavirus RT-PCR to assay rectal swabs and performed metagenomic sequencing on a representative subset of 14 rectal swabs and colon samples. No coronaviruses wer

Reemergence of Human Rabies in an Endemic Peruvian Amazon Region.

We report the case of two girls from a rural community in the Peruvian Amazon who were exposed to the rabies virus, with fatal outcomes in both cases. The reemergence of rabies in this endemic area after more than 11 years of successful control through massive immunization policies is highlighted in this report. In these cases, exposure occurred through contact with a domestic cat, although bat bites remain the most common source of rabies transmission in the region. Adopting a One Health approach and reinforcing periodic mass immunization campaigns are essential to prevent further outbreaks i

Deforestation and Bovine Rabies Outbreaks in Costa Rica, 1985-2020.

In Latin America, rabies virus has persisted in a cycle between Desmodus rotundus vampire bats and cattle, potentially enhanced by deforestation. We modeled bovine rabies virus outbreaks in Costa Rica relative to land-use indicators and found spatial-temporal relationships among rabies virus outbreaks with deforestation as a predictor.

A MERS-CoV antibody neutralizes a pre-emerging group 2c bat coronavirus.

The repeated emergence of zoonotic human betacoronaviruses (β-CoVs) dictates the need for broad therapeutics and conserved epitope targets for countermeasure design. Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS)-related coronaviruses (CoVs) remain a pressing concern for global health preparedness. Using metagenomic sequence data and CoV reverse genetics, we recovered a full-length wild-type MERS-like BtCoV/li/GD/2014-422 (BtCoV-422) recombinant virus, as well as two reporter viruses, and evaluated their human emergence potential and susceptibility to currently available countermeasures. Discovery and Evolutionary Analysis of a Novel Bat-Borne Paramyxovirus.

Paramyxoviruses are a group of RNA viruses, such as mumps virus, measles virus, Nipah virus, Hendra virus, Newcastle disease virus, and parainfluenza virus, usually transmitted by airborne droplets that are predominantly responsible for acute respiratory diseases. In this paper, we identified a novel paramyxovirus belonging to genus Jeilongvirus infecting 4/112 (3.6%) bats from two trapping sites of Hainan Province of China. In these animals, the viral RNA was detected exclusively in kidney tissues. This is the first full-length Jeilongvirus genome (18,095 nucleotides) from bats of genus Hippo

Emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants follow a historical pattern recorded in outgroups infecting non-human hosts.

The ability to predict emerging variants of SARS-CoV-2 would be of enormous value, as it would enable proactive design of vaccines in advance of such emergence. We estimated diversity of each site on a multiple sequence alignment (MSA) of the Spike (S) proteins from close relatives of SARS-CoV-2 that infected bat and pangolin before the pandemic. Then we compared the locations of high diversity sites in this MSA and those of mutations found in multiple emerging lineages of human-infecting SARS-CoV-2. This comparison revealed a significant correspondence, which suggests that a limited number of

RELATEDNESS AND GENETIC STRUCTURE OF BIG BROWN BAT (EPTESICUS FUSCUS) MATERNITY COLONIES IN AN URBAN-WILDLAND INTERFACE WITH PERIODIC RABIES VIRUS OUTBREAKS.

Big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus) are the bat species in North America most frequently found to be rabid because of their high rate of human contact and thus submissions for rabies testing, of which, 4-5% are positive. The social behavior of big brown bats during the summer months may drive space use and potential viral exposure to conspecifics and mesocarnivores. We collected 88 unique genetic samples via buccal swabs from big brown bats captured at four maternity roosts surrounding a golf course during the summer of 2013. We used seven microsatellite loci to estimate genetic relatedness amon
