[Primary polyuria in the female. Classification and evolution].

51 adult female patients with unexplained urinary frequency underwent urodynamic assessment and were followed for at least six months. Half of these patients present with unstable bladder which could not be diagnosed clinically, even retrospectively. In 14 out of 16 cases, the instability resolved with an I.V. injection of an anticholinergic drug. The same treatment administered orally "cured" one half of the patients. This proportion was increased to 5 out of 6 when the drug was administered to patients with a positive I.V. test. Symptoms recurred once treatment was stopped. Ten of the 23 pat

[Gynecomastia: attempt at a classification and surgical results].

Gynecomastia may appear at any age of life. We divided the cases we treated into three groups depending on the size of the gynecomastia. The patients were surgically corrected and then re-examined in order to find the most suitable incision. We consider a semicircumareolar incision on the inferior areolar margin the best. This kind of incision can also be used in cases of massive gynecomastia and results in almost invisible scars.

Macroglossia: a review of the condition and a new classification.

In studying macroglossia, no one has described normal tongue size or applied direct measurement to the pathologically enlarged tongue. Since macroglossia is primarily a condition that requires treatment on a symptomatic basis, definition of the problem in clinical terms is the most useful form for the practitioner. Based on published reports and our clinical experience, a classification scheme for macroglossia has been formulated. The concept of true macroglossia and relative macroglossia form a framework that categorizes acquired and congenital forms of tongue enlargement. True macroglossia e…

[Classification of benign tumors and cysts of the jaws].

On the basis of 324 cases of maxillary tumours, the authors review the classification of these neoplasms. The most frequent tumours are benign epithelial odontogenic tumours, which represent 55% of all tumours. The most common of these tumours is the ameloblastoma, followed by the odontomas. Most of the tumours of non-dental origin are benign (72% of this group). Amongst the malignant tumours, osteosarcomas are much more common than chondrosarcomas. The authors also discuss the various types of cyst and their respective relative frequency.

The development and classification of anomalies of the limbs in the human.

It is stressed that more detailed and more precise information concerning the human limb is available than is found in even the most recent books on the development of the vertebrate limb. The classifications of limb anomalies are multiplying but are not necessarily becoming better. In addition to continued vigilance concerning possible teratogens, the most valuable approach in the human is the superimposition of genetic data (where they exist) onto a detailed classification based on sound morphology and current principles of anatomical terminology.

Congenital trigeminal anaesthesia. A review and classification.

Forty-three patients with the syndrome of congenital trigeminal anaesthesia (CTA) have been reported to date. The cases have been divided into three groups based on the presence and nature of any associated clinical problems. Three additional cases are presented as characteristic of each of the groups. A different aetiology is proposed for each group. Group I consists of patients with CTA as an isolated finding. It is almost always bilateral, and typically involves the distribution of only the first division of the fifth nerve. There is no evidence of other neurological abnormalities or associ

A mechanistic classification of thoracolumbar spine fractures.

Thoracolumbar spinal injuries are classified on the basis of the mechanical mode of failure of the vertebral bodies. The fractures are presented in seven categories. Emphasis is placed on the injury component causing the fracture patterns. The choice of instrumentation for surgery is based on the surgeon's understanding of these injury patterns.

Classification and genetics of numeric anomalies of dentition.

A suggested classification of numeric anomalies of teeth is a trimodal classification: anodontia, hypodontia, and hyperdontia. A subclassification into nonsyndromic and syndromic cases would allow for uniform analysis. The limited data on anodontia and hyperdontia have made the genetic analysis of these anomalies difficult. The most suitable data for analysis on the genetics of numeric anomalies of dentition are on hypodontia. A reevaluation of this data, as presented in this report, suggests hypodontia follows an autosomal dominant mode of inheritance. However, the fact that penetrance is not…

Classification and management of congenital abnormalities of the femur.

Sixty-nine patients with congenital abnormality of the femur were reviewed. Their manifestation of femoral dysplasia ranged from an intact femur approximately 60 per cent of the length of the normal leg to a subtotal absence of the femur in which only the femoral condyles remained, often with a congenital fusion of the knee joint. Two groups were defined: Group I consisted of those with congenital hypoplastic femur in which the hip and knee could be made functional and where, in some patients at least, leg equalisation was possible; Group II consisted of those with true proximal focal femoral

[Comments on the international classification of oncologic diseases].

The original English version of ICD-O was slightly revised in German edition. Nevertheless, following inaccuracies remained: 1. Not other specification (NOS) should point but to the fact that there exist further possibilities for closer determination of coded tumour. That is why the abbreviation should not be used where other specification is concerned e. g. a histologenetical one. If the abbreviation is used instead of a code covering special forms (SF) they are to be specified by name. 2. Tumours with uncertain biological behavior are not coded consistently. They should be signed by 1 in den

A typology for the classification of disasters: implications for intervention.

A model that can be used to plan for disaster intervention services is presented. The model, which is based upon an ability to classify disasters, presents four dichotomous categories for intervention: (1) psychotherapeutic vs. educational, (2) individual vs. systems, (3) prevention vs. treatment, and (4) direct vs. indirect. The article presents a rationale for determining which intervention, or combination, would be appropriate for any given disaster, based on its classification.

The classification and management of acute orbital pseudotumors.

The clinical presentation, investigative findings, classification, and management of 17 acute pseudotumors based on patterns of orbital involvement is presented. Acute pseudotumors developed over days to weeks and were dominated by pain, neuropraxia, and inflammatory clinical features. Five patterns of acute inflammatory pseudotumor were seen. Anterior and diffuse acute pseudotumors were characterized by manifestations of inflammation of the globe and orbit including pain, lid swelling, ptosis, diplopia, uveitis, papillitis, optic neuropathy, and exudative retinal detachment. Anterior or diffu…

A tentative classification of recessively inherited ataxias.

We present a working classification of recessively inherited ataxic syndromes based on the use of simple tools available to every clinician: a good history (particularly pinpointing the age of onset) and a good neurological examination (simplified to the verification of the presence of ataxia, deep tendon reflexes in the knee, optic nerve, retinal and/or 8th nerve signs). In the three groups of disorders (non progressive, intermittent or progressive) patients can be hyper/normo reflexic, or they can be hypo/areflexic. Six principal types of progressive ataxic disorders are further delineated b…
