The Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus), a vector of dengue, Zika and other diseases, was introduced in Europe in the 1970s, where it is still widening its range. Spurred by public health concerns, several studies have delivered predictions of the current and future distribution of the species for this region, often with differing results. We provide the first joint analysis of these predictions, to identify consensus hotspots of high and low suitability, as well as areas with high uncertainty. The analysis focused on current and future climate conditions and was carried out for the whole

The ability to develop and maintain healthy romantic relationships is a key developmental task in young adulthood. The present study investigated how adolescent interpersonal skills (assertiveness, positive engagement) and family processes (family climate, parenting practices) influence the development of young adult romantic relationship functioning. We evaluated cross-lag structural equation models with a sample of 974 early adolescents living in rural and semi-rural communities in Pennsylvania and Iowa, starting in sixth grade (mean age = 12.4, 62.1% female) and followed into young adulthoo

Rhipicephalus sanguineus, the brown dog tick, kennel tick, or pan-tropical dog tick, is probably the most widespread ixodid tick, colonising both human and canine dwellings. It is of great significance in both human and veterinary medicine as a vector of several important pathogens and can also cause clinical illness in heavy infestations of dogs. However, there are still significant taxonomic uncertainties, and it is probable that some records of this tick refer to other species. Most past reviews have been broad-ranging or have focused on the pathogens that R. sanguineus transmits, and relat

Dengue is the world's fastest-growing vector borne disease and has significant epidemic potential in suitable climates. Recent disease models incorporating climate change scenarios predict geographic expansion across the globe, including parts of the United States and Europe. It will be increasingly important in the next decade for dermatologists to become familiar with dengue, as it commonly manifests with rashes, which can be used to aid diagnosis. In this review, we discuss dengue for general dermatologists, specifically focusing on its cutaneous manifestations, epidemiology, diagnosis, tre

Understanding how trees allocate assimilated carbon to growth is essential for projecting forest carbon sequestration. However, the temporal dynamics of the relative roles of carbon assimilation (source) versus cambial activity (sink) in regulating tree growth remain poorly understood. Using multiple gross and net primary productivity (GPP and NPP) data and tree-ring width records from 2126 sites worldwide, we quantified the temporal trend of the correlation between carbon assimilation and tree growth (R trend) over the past three decades. We found that the R trend varied substantially across

Understanding vegetation phenology is critical for assessing the impacts of climate change, particularly in regions vulnerable to environmental fluctuations. This study investigates the temporal trends and spatial variability of the start of photosynthetic activity (SOP) in natural vegetation across Central Asia over the past four decades (1982-2022) using satellite-derived Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) data. The research emphasizes the critical role of vegetation phenology in understanding responses to climate change. To extract spring phenological data, various smoothing tech

BACKGROUND: Climate change is accelerating the circulation of the chikungunya virus (CHIKV), posing a significant threat to both endemic areas and immunologically naive temperate regions. This study aims to synthesize empirical climatic drivers, future transmission projections, and global adaptation strategies to evaluate current evidence and identify key research gaps.
METHODS: This scoping review completed protocol registration on the Open Science Framework prior to literature retrieval, with systematic searches conducted across PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus and EBSCOhost to collect all re

BACKGROUND: Climate change is increasingly influencing the prevalence and severity of various diseases. While previous studies have linked climate variables to emergency department (ED) admissions, few have examined cause-specific patterns, particularly in tropical urban settings. OBJECTIVE: We quantified exposure–response relationships between minimum temperature (T-min) and cause-specific ED admissions in Singapore and projected future admission rates and excess incidence ratios (EIRs) from 2021 to 2060 under three Shared Socioeconomic Pathway (SSP) climate scenarios (SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, and

Aerosol optical depth (AOD) quantifies atmospheric aerosol loading and is fundamental for air quality monitoring, aerosol-climate interaction studies, and climate change assessments. Traditional satellite-based AOD retrieval methods using radiative transfer models are computationally intensive and prone to uncertainties stemming from assumptions about aerosol properties and surface reflectance. To mitigate these limitations, we proposed a deep learning-based AOD retrieval method using Attentive Interpretable Tabular Learning (TabNet). This approach enables accurate and efficient AOD retrieval

Newly discovered species are increasingly found to be threatened. For some, their formal description may already foretell their extinction, a phenomenon we here term the "Nasar Effect." This phenomenon is inspired by the tragic fate of Santiago Nasar, the protagonist of Gabriel García Márquez's Chronicle of a Death Foretold, whose impending death is known to everyone but himself. The Nasar Effect is particularly evident in climate-vulnerable ecosystems, where species may be projected for extinction based on dramatic climate-driven habitat loss. We illustrate the "Nasar Effect" through the desc

OBJECTIVE: Retrospective exposure to a higher number and prolonged duration of climate-related disasters could be positively associated with adolescent mental distress.
METHODS: Person-level data came from 38,616 high-school students residing in 22 urban public-school districts in 14 states (U.S. Youth Risk Behavior Survey, 2019). Each district's federally declared climate-related catastrophes (severe storms, floods, wildfire, etc.) came from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Logistic regression models estimated the adjusted odds ratios (aOR) of adolescent mental distress (MD, using su

Humans are altering the distribution of species by changing the climate and disrupting biotic interactions and dispersal. A fundamental hypothesis in spatial ecology suggests that these effects are scale dependent; biotic interactions should shape distributions at local scales, whereas climate should dominate at regional scales. If so, common single-scale analyses might misestimate the impacts of anthropogenic modifications on biodiversity and the environment. However, large-scale datasets necessary to test these hypotheses have not been available until recently. Here we conduct a cross-contin

Controlling pollution from waste landfills remains a critical environmental challenge, particularly in developing regions and fragile ecosystems. An effective tool to support this process is the hydrological assessment of disposal sites through simulation models. This study provides a comprehensive systematic review of mathematical models used to simulate landfill water balance over the past 15 years. A total of 32 relevant studies were identified from the Scopus, Web of Science, and SciELO databases, classifying them by model type, application scope (real or experimental), and climatic region

Dengue, a vector-borne disease driven by climate change, urbanization, and the adaptation of its vector, Aedes aegypti, poses a significant public health challenge. This study analyzed 23 years (2000-2022) of epidemiological data from Peru to examine the temporal and spatial drivers influencing dengue reported cases. Using secondary data from the Peruvian Ministry of Health, 501,027 cases were stratified by clinical severity, gender, geographic distribution, and temporal trends. The Amazonian and coastal regions, particularly Loreto, Ucayali, and Piura, bore the highest burden, collectively ac

Rocky Mountain spotted fever is a tick-borne disease that is highly dangerous but often overlooked by the public. To prevent the spread of the disease, it is important to understand the distribution patterns of its vectors' suitable areas. This study aims to explore the potential global suitability of areas for the vectors of Rocky Mountain spotted fever, including Dermacentor variabilis and Amblyomma cajennense under both historical and future climate scenarios. The study also seeks to investigate the impact of climatic factors on the distribution patterns of these vectors. Data on species di

BACKGROUND: Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and leptospirosis are seasonal rodent-borne infections in the Republic of Korea (Korea). The occurrences of HFRS and leptospirosis are influenced by climatic variability. However, few studies have examined the effects of local climatic variables on the development of these infections. The purpose of this study was to estimate the effect of climatic factors on the occurrence of HFRS and leptospirosis in Korea.
METHODS: Daily records on human cases of HFRS and leptospirosis between January 2001 to December 2009 were analyzed. The associat

Previous studies exploring the effects of climate on the nasal region have largely focused on external craniofacial linear parameters, using dry crania of modern human populations. This investigation augments traditional craniofacial morphometrics with internal linear and volumetric measures of the anatomic units comprising the nasal complex (i.e., internal nasal cavity depth, maxillary sinus volumes). The study focuses on macaques (i.e., Macaca mulatta and Macaca fascicularis) living at high and low altitudes, rather than on humans, since the short residency of migratory human populations may

Global warming and attendant climate change have been controversial for at least a decade. This is largely because of its societal implications. With the recent publication of the Third Assessment Report of the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change there has been renewed interest and controversy about how certain the scientific community is of its conclusions: that humans are influencing the climate and that global temperatures will continue to rise rapidly in this century. This review attempts to update what is known and in particular what advances have been made in the pa

A differential equation model for bancroftian filariasis transmission dynamics is developed. Fluctuations of the mosquito vector population are related to environmental variables such as climate and vector control operations. Prevalence in the mosquito population and mean worm burden in the human population are considered. The behaviour of the model is compared with epidemiologic and entomological data from Pondicherry (South India). The model enables one to make predictions on the effect of future control operations.
