Is the Cognitive Ability of Fawn-Footed Mosaic-Tailed Rat Melomys cervinipes Offspring Related to Mothers' Care or Cognitive Abilities?

The cognitive abilities of many non-human animals have been investigated in recent years; however, outside of laboratory rodent strains, it is largely unknown how direct and indirect genetic factors influence the development of cognition. In a previous study, we found no impact of maternal genetic or non-genetic effects on problem solving in the fawn-footed mosaic-tailed rat Melomys cervinipes. However, cognition is multifaceted, and different forms of cognition may not all be influenced by the same factors. Therefore, we investigated whether maternal genetic and non-genetic effects affected t

Cognitive trajectories in the nine months following recent-onset major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Specific cognitive difficulties are common in major depressive disorder, impacting functioning and quality of life. Yet, the timing of their emergence and longitudinal course remains poorly understood. This study aimed to characterise longitudinal cognitive functioning following recent onset depression and its association with changes in depressive symptoms. METHODS: Longitudinal data from the PRONIA (Personalised Prognostic Tools for Early Psychosis Management) cohort recruited from ten European sites were used to evaluate trajectory differences between Healthy Controls (HC) and

Brief screening for cognitive impairment in addictive disorders.

Chronic use of mind altering substances can lead to a wide variety of neuropsychological deficits, affecting the domains of attention, learning, memory, reasoning. Executive functions such as working memory, cognitive flexibility and inhibitory control may specifically be impaired. These deficits can impact engagement in effective psychosocial interventions. Mild to moderate cognitive dysfunction may not be picked up in routine clinical examination or through commonly used tests like the mini-mental state examination (MMSE). Detailed neuropsychological tests, although extremely valuable, are t…

Adaptive modulation of theta sweeps in the brain's navigation circuit.

Efficient navigation requires prioritizing information from behaviorally relevant locations. In rats, such selective sampling may arise from theta-paced sweeps in grid and place cell populations, which scan nearby space in a left-right alternating pattern coordinated by parasubicular direction signals. This alternation promotes uniform spatial coverage during exploration, but whether sweeps can be flexibly tuned to moment-to-moment demands remains unknown. Using large-scale Neuropixels recordings in freely behaving rats, we show that sweeps and direction signals are rapidly and dynamically mod

Backbone spiking sequence as a basis for preplay, replay, and default states in human cortex.

Sequences of spiking activity have been heavily implicated as potential substrates of memory formation and retrieval across many species. A parallel line of recent evidence also asserts that sequential activity may arise from and be constrained by pre-existing network structure. Here we reconcile these two lines of research in the human brain by measuring single unit spiking sequences in the temporal lobe cortex as participants perform an episodic memory task. We find the presence of an average backbone spiking sequence identified during pre-task rest that is stable over time and different cog

Integrating Acceptance and Commitment Therapy with intervention mapping to enhance self-care in type 2 diabetes: a conceptual framework.

Self-care in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) remains suboptimal despite evidence for the effectiveness of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) in chronic illness management. This conceptual paper integrates ACT-based psychological flexibility processes with Steps 1-4 of the Intervention Mapping framework to develop a brief, replicable group intervention for primary care. Acceptance, cognitive defusion, and values clarification are specified as modifiable determinants of barriers in self-monitoring, diet, exercise, and medication adherence, organized into performance-determinant matrices to

Electroconvulsive therapy for catatonia in a boy with hydrocephalus and an arachnoid cyst.

We report on the successful use of electroconvulsive therapy in a 13-year-old boy with congenital hydrocephalus, a history of multiple shunt revisions, and a stable prepontine arachnoid cyst, who experienced profound catatonic deterioration. After initial shunt placement at age 20 months, the patient had followed normal motor, cognitive, and social developmental trajectories. Two uncomplicated shunt revisions were performed at ages 10 and 13 years. Three months after the last revision, the patient demonstrated multiple psychomotor signs, culminating in hospital admission for rigidity, posturin

Sex-specific effect of prenatal alcohol exposure on N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor function in orbitofrontal cortex pyramidal neurons of mice.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol consumption during pregnancy can produce behavioral and cognitive deficits that persist into adulthood. These include impairments in executive functions, learning, planning, and cognitive flexibility. We have previously shown that moderate prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) significantly impairs reversal learning, a measure of flexibility mediated across species by different brain areas that include the orbital frontal cortex (OFC). Reversal learning is likewise impaired by genetic or pharmacological inactivation of GluN2B subunit-containing N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMD…

Network-specific metabolic cost of functional connectivity in the human brain.

Despite decades of extensive research, the complex architecture underlying human brain signaling remains incompletely understood. Previous work investigating the relationship between brain glucose metabolism and functional connectivity (FC) employed whole-brain analysis, without accounting for network interactions, dependencies or hierarchies. Here, we assess network-specific differences in the relationship between FC and metabolic demand, using [18F]FDG PET/MR data from three independent datasets. The metabolic cost of FC, i.e., the change in glucose demand associated with corresponding chang

Neuropsychological Predictors of Treatment Dropout Among Intimate Partner Violence Perpetrators.

Background: The interplay between intervention dropout and increased recidivism among men convicted of intimate partner violence (IPV) underscores the need for a model that investigates the underlying variables associated with IPV perpetrator dropout. While sociodemographic factors are traditional predictors of dropout, the potential role of cognitive functioning remains insufficiently researched. This study examined whether certain neuropsychological domains, previously signaled by the scientific literature, including general intelligence, cognitive flexibility, planning abilities, verbal flu…
