Effects of an embodied cognitive learning-based inductive venipuncture arm simulator on nursing internship trainees' learning achievement, motivation, self-efficacy, and anxiety.

BACKGROUND: This study developed an inductive venipuncture arm simulator (IVPAS) based on embodied cognitive theory for healthcare providers to enhance their learning and experience of venipuncture skills. The IVPAS integrated a highly adopted simulated arm model, which is available on the market, with customized simulated blood vessels. Equipped with a touch-sensitive device, the IVPAS offered feedback on the proper angle of insertion and vein location, enabling trainees to safely practice venipuncture techniques in a realistic setting. In addition, this system simulated unexpected occurrence

Towards personalized immersive virtual reality neurorehabilitation: a human-centered design.

BACKGROUND: Head-mounted displays can be used to offer personalized immersive virtual reality (IVR) training for patients who have suffered an Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) by tailoring the complexity of visual and auditory stimuli to the patient's cognitive capabilities. However, it is still an open question how these virtual environments should be designed. METHODS: We used a human-centered design approach to help define the characteristics of suitable virtual training environments for ABI patients. We conducted (i) observations, (ii) interviews with eleven neurorehabilitation experts, and (i

Effects of multisession frontoparietal network anodal tDCS and cognitive rehabilitation on subjective cognitive impairment: a double-blind RCT.

Repeated sessions of cognitive training and anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) have the potential to enhance cognition in patients with subjective cognitive impairment (SCI). We hypothesized that this combination would improve memory function and reduce subjective complaints in SCI patients. In a randomized sham-controlled double-blind study, 35 SCI patients (ages 35–50) were assigned to one of two intervention groups in a 1:1 ratio using a computer-generated random number sequence. The intervention consisted of 10 sessions of cognitive training over three weeks, with concur…

Localization of odors can be learned.

Chemicals selectively stimulating the olfactory nerve typically cannot be localized in a lateralization task. Purpose of this study was to investigate whether the ability of subjects to localize an olfactory stimulus delivered passively to 1 of the 2 nostrils would improve under training. Fifty-two young, normosmic women divided in 2 groups participated. One group performed olfactory lateralization training, whereas the other group performed cognitive tasks. Results showed that only subjects performing lateralization training significantly improved in their ability to lateralize olfactory stim

Cognitive Effort during Visuospatial Problem Solving in Physical Real World, on Computer Screen, and in Virtual Reality.

Spatial cognition plays a crucial role in academic achievement, particularly in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) domains. Immersive virtual environments (VRs) have the growing potential to reduce cognitive load and improve spatial reasoning. However, traditional methods struggle to assess the mental effort required for visuospatial processes due to the difficulty in verbalizing actions and other limitations in self-reported evaluations. In this neuroergonomics study, we aimed to capture the neural activity associated with cognitive workload during visuospatial tasks and

A study of how immersion and interactivity in MoCap mediate psychological affordances and drive conceptual learning in computer animation courses.

INTRODUCTION: Process-level mechanisms remain underexplored in computer animation education. This study reports an initial empirical test and refinement of the Cognitive Affective Model of MoCap Training (CAMMT), which proposes that immersion and action-contingent interactivity shape training through psychological affordances and related cognitive-affective processes. METHODS: Immersion and interactivity were isolated in a 2 × 2 between-subjects experiment (N = 117) during a virtual lesson on character motion design. Two-way ANOVAs tested the effects of immersion and interactivity on CAMMT va

The EmpkinS-EKSpression Reappraisal Training Augmented With Kinesthesia in Depression: One-Armed Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Harboring dysfunctional depressogenic cognitions contributes to the development and maintenance of depression. A central goal of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for depression is to invalidate such cognitions via cognitive reappraisal (CR). However, relatively low remission rates and high dropout rates in CBT demonstrate the need for further improvement. Potentially, the effects of CBT could be enhanced by addressing not only dysfunctional depressogenic cognitions but also body states associated with depression. This may be done, for example, by systematically pairing the invali

Can metric feedback training hinder actions involving distance?

OBJECTIVE: The present studies tested whether distance estimation training with metric feedback can degrade the performance of untrained primarily perceptual-motor tasks. BACKGROUND: Training with metric feedback can improve distance estimations. However, previous research led to the conclusion that those improvements stemmed from changes in cognitive processing rather than in perception. If trainees applied their new cognitive strategies to primarily perceptual-motor tasks, then the performance of those tasks should degrade. The present studies tested that possibility. METHOD: Experiment 1

Improving episodic memory: Frontal-midline theta neurofeedback training increases source memory performance.

Cognitive and neurofeedback training (NFT) studies have demonstrated that training-induced alterations of frontal-midline (FM) theta activity (4-8 Hz) transfer to cognitive control processes. Given that FM theta oscillations are assumed to provide top-down control for episodic memory retrieval, especially for source retrieval, that is, accurate recollection of contextual details of prior episodes, the present study investigated whether FM theta NFT transfers to memory control processes. It was assessed (1) whether FM theta NFT improves source retrieval and modulates its underlying EEG characte
