Traumatic Abdominal Wall Hernia With Sigmoid Colon Transection Following Bicycle Handlebar Injury: A Rare Case Report.

Traumatic abdominal wall hernia may occur when a focal blunt force from a bicycle handlebar transmits substantial energy to the abdominal wall and viscera despite minimal external injury. This injury creates a diagnostic challenge, as early clinical findings can be subtle while serious intra‑abdominal injury evolves. We report a case of a 45‑year‑old man who presented with delayed, progressive abdominal pain after low‑velocity handlebar trauma. An early contrast‑enhanced CT was decisive in identifying a large abdominal wall defect with bowel herniation, free air, and suspected colonic perforat

Endoloop-clip closure versus hemoclips for large sigmoid colon perforations: a randomized controlled ex vivo study.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Sigmoid colon perforations during colonoscopy are technically challenging to close endoscopically because of fixed angulation and luminal redundancy. This study compared the endoloop-clip technique with conventional hemoclips for the closure of large sigmoid colon perforations. METHODS: In this prospective, randomized, controlled ex vivo study, 40 standardized full-thickness 3-cm defects were created in fresh porcine sigmoid colon specimens and randomly assigned (1:1) to hemoclip closure (n = 20) or endoloop-clip closure (n = 20). Two experienced endoscopists each performed 1

Comprehensive revenue comparison of pure robotic vs. hybrid robotic surgery for sigmoid colon and rectosigmoid cancer.

PURPOSE: Robotic surgery (RS) in colorectal procedures is growing but remains costly. This study evaluated the cost-saving potential of hybrid robotic surgery (hybrid RS), which integrates laparoscopic devices, compared to conventional RS (pure RS). METHODS: This single-center retrospective study (2022-2024) compared pure RS and hybrid RS for sigmoid and rectosigmoid cancers. Propensity score matching minimizes bias. Total revenue is calculated as the total fee minus the total cost. RESULTS: After matching, 20 patients (10 per group) were analyzed. Hybrid RS improved total revenue ($3515.15

SMARCA4-deficient non-small cell lung cancer with metastasis to the sigmoid colon: a case report.

BACKGROUND: SWI/SNF-related, matrix-associated, actin-dependent regulator of chromatin, subfamily a, member 4-deficient non-small cell lung cancer (SMARCA4-dNSCLC) is a rare subtype of NSCLC whose definitive radiographic characteristics have not yet been fully delineated. Clinically, these tumors often metastasize to distant organs and lymph nodes at an early stage, which is strongly associated with poor clinical prognosis. The common metastatic sites include bone, brain, adrenal glands, liver, and spleen, whereas intestinal metastasis is extremely rare. In this case, we describe a rare instan

[A Case of Successful Multidisciplinary Management of Recurrent Peritoneal Dissemination after Surgery for Sigmoid Colon Cancer].

A 58-year-old male patient underwent laparoscopic-assisted high anterior resection and D3 dissection for sigmoid colon cancer in April 2017. Pathology results showed S, type 2, tub1, pSS, pN1, ly1, v0, pStage Ⅲa. He was treated with S-1 for 6 months as adjuvant chemotherapy. One year after surgery, PET-CT showed a peritoneal seeding nodule localized in the pelvis, and he underwent laparoscopic partial omentectomy and partial resection of the small intestine. Subsequently, a total of 35 courses of FOLFOX+Pmab therapy were performed. During this period, there was no apparent recurrence on imagin

Competitive Risk Analysis of Prognosis in Older Adults with Sigmoid Colon Adenocarcinoma: A Population-Based Study.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study is to employ a competing risk model based on the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database to identify prognostic factors for elderly individuals with sigmoid colon adenocarcinoma (SCA) and compare them with the classic Cox proportional hazards model. METHODS: We extracted data from elderly patients diagnosed with SCA registered in the SEER database between 2010 and 2015. Univariate analysis was conducted using cumulative incidence functions and Gray's test, while multivariate analysis was performed using both the Fine-Gray and Cox propo

[A Case of Metachronous Liver Metastasis That Recurred 15 Years after Surgery for Sigmoid Colon Cancer].

We report a case of metachronous liver metastasis occurring 15 years after surgery for sigmoid colon cancer(SCC). The patient was a 76-year-old male who underwent sigmoid colectomy(D3 lymphadenectomy)for SCC 15 years ago. Pathological examination at that time revealed adenocarcinoma(tub1, pap), pT3, pN0, cM0, pStage Ⅱa. He received adjuvant chemotherapy with S-1 for approximately 1 year postoperatively and was under observation thereafter. After 15 years, the tumor markers CEA and CA19-9 showed elevated levels during follow-up visits with his primary care physician. A CT scan revealed a liver

Traumatic Right Iliac Fossa Abdominal Wall Hernia Containing Meckel's Diverticulum and Sigmoid Colon: A Case Report.

Traumatic abdominal wall hernia (TAWH) is a rare but serious condition resulting from blunt abdominal trauma, characterized by the herniation of bowel or abdominal organs through a disrupted musculature and fascia without skin penetration. This report describes a unique case of a 24-year-old man who sustained a high-velocity blunt abdominal injury from a motorcycle handlebar during a road traffic accident. The clinical presentation, diagnostic challenges, surgical intervention, and postoperative recovery are discussed to emphasize the importance of the early recognition and management of TAWH

[A Case of Sigmoid Colon Cancer with Bladder Invasion Successfully Treated with Chemotherapy with mFOLFOX6+Cetuximab].

A 70' woman presented to our hospital complaining of a weight loss and loss of appetite. She was diagnosed with advanced sigmoid colon cancer by colonoscopy, and CT scan showed that the tumor had invaded the bladder and left ovary, and showed enlarged para-aortic lymph nodes. The tumor was large, and it was determined that a total cystectomy was necessary for radical resection, it was decided to perform pre-operative chemotherapy. Because RAS gene has no mutation, the regimen chose mFOLFOX6, in addition to cetuximab. Although Grade 3 neutropenia was observed, there was no appearance of adverse

Comprehension of rectosigmoid junction cancer molecular features by comparison to the rectum or sigmoid colon cancer.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a heterogeneous cancer. Its treatment depends on its anatomical site and molecular features. Carcinomas of the rectosigmoid junction are frequent; however, specific data on these tumors are sparse, as they are frequently assigned to either the colon or rectum. This study sought to identify the molecular features of rectosigmoid junction cancer to determine whether there should be any difference between the therapeutic management of rectosigmoid junction cancer and that of sigmoid colon or rectum cancer. METHODS: The data of 96 CRC patients with carcinoma

A case of sigmoid colon volvulus with transanal ileus tube placement and Sharon's operation performed safely.

Although endoscopic repair is often performed for sigmoid colon volvulus without intestinal necrosis, surgery is the common choice of treatment due to recurrence. With no established treatment, Hartmann's operation or sigmoid colon resection is often performed. We report a case of a 65-year-old man with transanal ileus tube placement before surgery for sigmoid colon volvulus to prevent recurrence and achieve intestinal decompression followed by Sharon's operation to achieve one-stage anastomosis. The patient showed good postoperative course, with no recurrence 3 months after surgery. This repo

Sigmoid Colon Cancer Masquerading as a Right Incarcerated Inguinal Hernia: A Case Study and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Indirect inguinal hernia and sigmoid colon cancer are both common diseases, but carcinoma within the hernia sac is rare. We present a case of sigmoid colon cancer masquerading as a right incarcerated inguinal hernia. Since such a presentation is rare, and the correct diagnosis is usually made intraoperatively, there is still no consensus on the best treatment modality for such patients. CASE PRESENTATION: A 70-year-old man presented to our hospital on September 20, 2020, with a right inguinal mass that had been painful for half a month, accompanied by symptoms of difficult defecat

Dosimetric effect of variable rectum and sigmoid colon filling during carbon ion radiotherapy to sacral chordoma.

PURPOSE: Carbon ion radiotherapy (CIRT) is sensitive to anatomical density variations. We examined the dosimetric effect of variable intestinal filling condition during CIRT to ten sacral chordoma patients. METHODS: For each patient, eight virtual computed tomography scans (vCTs) were generated by varying the density distribution within the rectum and the sigmoid in the planning computed tomography (pCT) with a density override approach mimicking a heterogeneous combination of gas and feces. Totally full and empty intestinal preparations were modelled. In addition, five different intestinal f

Complete sigmoid colon erosion by an intrauterine contraception device in an ectopic pregnancy: a case report.

INTRODUCTION An intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) is a common contraception method used for family planning. IUCD erosion into adjacent organs is a rare but serious complication of IUCD use. CASE PRESENTATION A 41-year-old female presented to us with a leaking left ectopic pregnancy. Emergency laparotomy and left salpingectomy were performed. A copper ICUD was found intraperitoneally and part of it had completely eroded into the sigmoid colon. Sigmoid colotomy was performed and the IUCD was removed successfully. Further history revealed that the patient had her IUCD inserted 12 years pr

Magnetic compression anastomosis with atypical anastomosis for anastomotic stenosis of the sigmoid colon: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic compression anastomosis (MCA) is mainly applied in the gastrointestinal and biliary tracts through a nonsurgical procedure that can create an anastomosis similar to that obtained through surgery. Magnets usually adsorb in the end-to-end direction (end-to-end anastomosis), exert a strong magnetic force and create an anastomosis according to the size of the magnets. Regular endoscopic dilation is required to prevent restenosis when the anastomotic size is small. We report a case in which MCA was successfully used to treat anastomotic stenosis of the sigmoid colon; the magnet
