Communication Experiences of Patients With Hearing Loss During Hemodialysis Treatment and the Potential Role of Communication Tools: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: People with hearing loss may have difficulty communicating with health care providers if not properly supported. Hearing loss is common among people with kidney failure. Outpatient hemodialysis centers may present communication barriers due to noisy machines and overlapping conversations. Tools, such as assistive listening devices, exist to help people with hearing loss communicate. If and how they should be used in the outpatient hemodialysis setting is unclear. Understanding the patient perspective is an important first step before implementing such solutions. OBJECTIVE: Describ

"We Have a Moral Commitment to the Community to Sustain It": Exploring Determinants of Strategy Sustainment After the HEALing Communities Study.

BACKGROUND: Opioid overdoses are a pervasive public health crisis. Overdose education and naloxone distribution (OEND), and medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) are evidence-based practices (EBPs) that can reduce opioid-related deaths. The HEALing Communities Study (HCS) worked with coalitions of community partner organizations during the Communities That HEAL (CTH) intervention to increase OEND and MOUD access. This study aims to explore how EBP strategies, or the mechanisms by which EBPs were delivered, were sustained after the study ended. METHOD: Interviews with representatives from

Addressing Challenges in a Pilot Naloxone Distribution Program for BIPOC Communities in King County, Washington: A Community Practice Brief.

Opioid overdose deaths disproportionately affect Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities, yet these communities often have less access to opioid education and naloxone distribution (OEND) programs. This Practice Report describes practice-based observations from a group of interdisciplinary partners who developed OEND programming for BIPOC communities in Seattle, Washington. Funded by Public Health-Seattle & King County (PHSKC), a pediatric primary care clinic partnered with community organizations to deliver culturally responsive OEND. To increase participation, the program

Growing Communicators: A Fine-Grained Analysis of Toddlers' Communicative Intentions From Requestive and Expressive, to Information Seeking and Giving.

Children readily respond to others' bids for communicative interactions from early childhood and actively initiate these themselves. However, the extent and variety of early child-initiated communicative intentions is poorly understood, with theoretically derived intentions lacking systematic empirical support from naturalistic observations. This study, using a cross-sectional data set, provides a fine-grained characterization of communicative behaviors across three time points in the second year of life (13, 18, and 23 months, N = 47). We coded one-hour-long video recordings of home observati

Effects of Continuous Cropping on Chili Root Rot: Insights from Rhizosphere Microbial Communities and Synthetic Community Applications.

Continuous cropping often results in stunted plant growth and a higher incidence of soil-borne diseases. Soil microbial communities play a crucial role in promoting plant growth, maintaining plant health, and enhancing plant resistance to various diseases. This study examines the impact of continuous cropping on chili root rot and explores the contribution of soil microbial communities to alleviating this issue. The results revealed that prolonged continuous cropping significantly altered the composition of the rhizosphere bacterial community. High-throughput sequencing analysis indicated a ma

Community: Component based differential cell communication analysis in large multi-sample case-control scRNAseq datasets.

Changes in cell-cell communication during disease can result from shifts in tissue composition, variations in the proportion of cells engaged in signaling, and differences in ligand-receptor expression. To address this, we developed community, an R package designed for differential communication analysis in multi-sample case-control scRNAseq datasets. Community reconstructs interactions by evaluating cell type abundance, the active fraction of cells, and their expression levels. This method identifies communication patterns that are upregulated, downregulated, unchanged, or compensated. Applie

Building Tobacco Treatment Capacity and Sustainability: A Qualitative Study on Implementation of Community Pharmacy Technicians as Community Health Workers.

Community pharmacies are increasingly providing health care services like tobacco treatment and disease-related management but need sustainable models for implementation. As several state Medicaid programs reimburse for community health worker (CHW) services, one promising model is to have pharmacy technicians engage with patients as designated CHWs. This qualitative study interviewed staff in seven California pharmacies about their experience with and perspectives on implementing community pharmacy technicians as CHWs. Guided by implementation science frameworks, data were hand-coded and anal

Seeing Into the Future: Adults' Accuracy Predicting the Vocabulary of Early Symbolic Communicators Who Use Augmentative and Alternative Communication.

PURPOSE: Vocabulary access is important for individuals who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), especially for children in the early stages of language learning. This study sought to understand how accurate speech-language pathologists (SLPs), teachers, and parents are in predicting the vocabulary needed by early symbolic communicators who use AAC in three contexts. METHOD: Ten groups, each with a child who used AAC as their primary mode of communication and who was classified as an early symbolic communicator and their parent, teacher, and SLP, participated. The parents, te

Availability of community resources reduces the association among community violence exposure, negative emotionality, and substance use disorders.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to community violence is associated with increased occurrence of substance use disorders (SUD). The self-medication hypothesis states that heightened negative emotionality may underlie the link between exposure to community violence and SUD. However, it is not well-understood if access to community resources, a broader public health approach, influences the purported psychological mechanisms underlying the link between community violence exposure and SUD. OBJECTIVE: We examined whether negative emotionality mediates the association between youth-onset community violence e

A Medical Anthropology Assessment of Community Liver Cancer Risks: Qualitative Comparisons of Communities with Different Risk Profiles in Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Thailand has the highest incidence rate of cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) in the world, and a high rate of hepatocellular carcinoma. Although risk factors for these two types of liver cancer have been identified, gaps persist in models for prevention. This qualitative study examined community awareness of liver cancer risk factors and prevention in rural Thailand. METHODS: Qualitative interviews were conducted with two groups from two villages in the north of Thailand. Village A (5 participants) has a high prevalence of CCA, while Village B (10 participants) has low prevalence. Open-end

Effects of the Communities that Care (CTC) Prevention System on Youth Violence Outcomes in Two Violence-Impacted Denver Communities.

UNLABELLED: Preventing and reducing youth violence remains a significant public health challenge for urban marginalized communities across the country. This project used a Communities That Care (CTC) approach to build a community-level prevention infrastructure across two Denver, Colorado communities experiencing high-burden, with a primary aim of reducing youth violence. To examine the impact of the CTC system on youth violence outcomes, we assessed within- and between-community effects using two quasi-experimental approaches-Interrupted Time Series (ITS) and Difference in Differences (DiD) a

Empowering community partners in health disparities research: Refining a community-based participatory research (CBPR) training curriculum.

The adoption of Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) approaches has increased due to its potential to reduce health disparities through Community-Academic Partnerships (CAP). Providing community members (CM) capacity-building opportunities is a way of empowering communities and promoting social change. To support the development of CAPs, the Community Training Institute for Health Disparities (CTIHD) was created in southern Puerto Rico to capacitate community leaders in the CBPR approach and basic research knowledge through the CTIHD-Community Research Program (CRP). In 2019, six syll

Implementation of the national community health policy in Guinea: a decision space analysis of the roles and responsibilities of community health workers.

INTRODUCTION: Community health workers (CHW) are crucial for universal health coverage (UHC) in low- and middle-income countries. Decentralization supports this goal but can cause issues if local actors misunderstand their roles. This study explores how Guinea's local health system actors understood and executed their responsibilities in delivering community health services from 2017 to 2021. METHODS: This is a subanalysis of 168 CHW from a larger study of 522 respondents on the implementation of community health policy in Guinea. We used a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design to asses

Listening to the voices of Guatemalan community leaders: a participatory approach to identifying priorities to curtail HIV within transgender communities.

Transgender (trans) communities in Guatemala are severely and disproportionately affected by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), with overall HIV prevention and care services severely limited. Our binational community-based participatory research partnership sought to identify priorities for advancing HIV health equity and curtailing the epidemic within Guatemalan transgender communities. In June 2024, we held five stratified, in-person Spanish-language listening sessions in Guatemala City with community leaders (N = 18) representing grassroots trans advocacy groups, frontline mental healt

Subsequent risk of cancer among adults with peripheral artery disease in the community: The atherosclerosis risk in communities (ARIC) study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Several studies reported an increased cancer risk related to lower-extremity peripheral artery disease (PAD) but had important caveats: not accounting for key confounders like smoking, follow-up <10 years, or no race-specific results. To assess the long-term independent association of PAD with cancer incidence in a bi-racial community-based cohort. METHODS: We categorized 13,106 ARIC participants without cancer at baseline (mean age 54.0 [SD 5.7] years, 45.7 % male, and 26.1 % Black) into symptomatic PAD (clinical history or intermittent claudication), asymptomatic PAD (a

Faith-based Community Engagement in HIV-Testing and Awareness of HIV Status in Southern, Rural, African American Communities.

The Deep South is the epicenter of the HIV-epidemic in the United States, with rural AAs bearing the greatest burden. Traditional efforts to improve testing efforts have been largely unsuccessful due to their failure to recognize and leverage the sociopolitical and cultural factors that affect the uptake of HIV-screening interventions at the community level. The purpose of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of the socio-cultural contexts impacting HIV-testing in the rural South, and to assess strategies to increase testing in rural, Southern communities. Focus groups (n = 8) and sem

Training community members to deliver an intervention for substance use disorder: Overcoming implementation barriers in American Indian communities.

INTRODUCTION: Although American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) people have high rates of abstinence from alcohol and other drugs, there also is evidence of greater rates of substance use disorders (SUDs) in Native communities. Health disparities associated with substance use are compounded by inadequate access to evidence-based treatments (EBTs). Lack of mental health providers is one notable barrier to EBT implementation in rural AI reservation communities. Our Indigenous Recovery Planning (IRP) intervention merges cultural lessons and culturally adapted relapse prevention strategies to fac
