Human B cell lines were tested for the capacity to convert C3 to C3b/iC3b through the alternative C pathway (ACP) and to fix the generated C3 fragments. The panel of lines included four Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-negative Burkitt's lymphomas and their sublines converted with two EBV strains: the prototype B958 (B virus) and the nontransforming P3HR-1 (P virus). A number of viruses have been implicated as being the cause of various forms of myositis, including acute transient myositis, chronic polymyositis, and dermatomyositis. Islet cell antibodies were investigated in 127 non-diabetic children after mumps infection and in four out of seven children who developed diabetes mellitus shortly after active mumps vaccination. In connection with some rather uncommon cases, the authors asked themselves whether leptospirosis may also develop as a chronic infection. To answer this question, we took into consideration four of the most representative investigated cases encountered during the last 22 years. In conclusion, it appears that in some circumstances, human leptospirosis could present itself as a chronic disease.

Since syphilis is most often diagnosed by serologic studies, the correct interpretation of these tests is critical. Serologic tests are classified as nontreponemal of treponemal, according to the antigen employed. Flocculation tests are generally used for routine screening because of their simplicity. The treponemal procedures are more specific, but false-positive results may still occur. Results vary with the procedure, stage of disease and treatment. Significant difficulties remain with the serologic diagnosis of neurosyphilis and congenital syphilis.
