Sex drugs, peer connections, and HIV: Use and risk among African American, Latino, and Multiracial young men who have sex with men (YMSM) in Los Angeles and New York.

African American and Latino young men who have sex with men are at high risk for HIV infection. We administered brief intercept surveys (N=416) at 18 Black and Latino gay pride events in Los Angeles and New York in 2006 and 2007. Ordinal logistic regressions were used to model the effects of substance use during sex, peer connectedness, relationship status, and homelessness on condom use. Alcohol use, crystal use, homelessness, and having a primary relationship partner were negatively associated with condom use, while peer connectedness and marijuana use during sex were positively associated w

Characteristics of Sex Events, Partners, and Motivations and Their Associations with HIV-Risk Behavior in a Daily Diary Study of High-Risk Men Who Have Sex with Men (MSM).

In the United States, men who have sex with men (MSM) continue to be at high-risk for HIV and other STIs, and condoms represent the most popular, affordable, and accessible method of prevention. Although a vast body of research has explored various factors associated with condom use in MSM, fewer studies have explored situation-level characteristics that affect their decisions about sex partners and condom use. Daily diary studies are well-suited to help improve our understanding of these event-level factors in detail, including the sex events themselves, partner characteristics, and motivatio…

Correlates of Heterosexual Anal Intercourse among Women in the 2006-2010 National Survey of Family Growth.

INTRODUCTION: Heterosexual anal intercourse (HAI) is common among U.S. women. Receptive anal intercourse is a known risk factor for HIV, yet there is a paucity of data on HAI frequency and distribution in the United States. Condom use is lower with HAI vs. vaginal intercourse, but little is known regarding of correlates of HAI with and without condoms. AIMS: The aims of this study were to describe recent (past 12 months) and lifetime HAI among sexually active reproductive-aged U.S. women, and to characterize women who engage in HAI with and without condoms. METHODS: We analyzed a sample of 1…

How do social norms impact HIV sexual risk behavior in HIV-positive men who have sex with men?: multiple mediator effects.

This study examines mediation of the association between social norms and unsafe sexual behavior. Self-report data were collected from 675 HIV-infected men enrolled in a study exploring interventions for HIV risk behavior. Unsafe sex included any unprotected anal sex with HIV-negative or HIV status unknown partners in the last three months. Norms for condom use indirectly influenced unsafe sex through condom self-efficacy and/or safer sex intentions. Additionally, sexual behavior discontrol influenced unsafe sex regardless of other individual or social factors. Our results suggest that interve

Induced abortion, contraceptive use, and dual protection among female sex workers in Moscow, Russia.

OBJECTIVE: To describe abortion history and current contraceptive use among female sex workers (FSWs) in Moscow, Russia. METHODS: A clinic-based survey was conducted among 147 FSWs in Moscow during an 8-month period in 2005. RESULTS: In total, 83 of 143 (58.0%) FSWs reported a history of abortion, with 45 of 143 (31.5%) indicating multiple abortions. Condoms were the primary form of contraception (145/146 [99.3%]); just 17 of 142 (12.0%) FSWs reported using non-barrier modern contraception. All women who reported using a non-barrier modern method also indicated condom use (i.e. dual protecti…

HIV risk reduction among young minority adults in Broward County.

We examined changes in perceptions of HIV risk, abstinence, condom use, and intentions to use condoms for disease protection among African American, Hispanic, Haitian, and Afro-Caribbean unmarried and married men and women living in Broward County, Florida. Data were collected through computer-assisted telephone interview surveys conducted during 2001, 2002, and 2003 with cross-sectional probability samples of 18-39 year old residents of 12 high AIDS incidence ZIP code areas. Perceptions of HIV risk increased over time for men, but not for women. Unmarried Haitian women 18-22 years old were mo…

A comparison of consensus and nonconsensus approaches to modeling contraceptive choice behavior.

This paper develops a more general model of contraceptive choice, taking into account a fundamental difference between the condom and the contraceptive pill, the two most commonly used reversible contraceptives in the US. The pill produces a single output of pregnancy prevention, but the condom is an input into a joint production for both pregnancy prevention and disease protection. Since the condom is ultimately used by the male, and the pill by the female, noncooperative game theory is used to model the separate male and female utility functions. Using both Stackelberg and Nash as solution c

Contraception in the teenager. A comparison of four methods of contraception in adolescent girls.

The continuation rates, side effects and use-effectiveness of four types of contraceptive were studied during a two-year follow-up period in a group of 160 teenage girls of high socioeconomic standing who hd requested contraception advice. The method of contraception was selected by the girls after a discussion of the alternatives. Results showed good rates of continuation among girls selecting oral contraceptives, the intrauterine device (IUD) and condoms. Side effects and complications preclude the widespread use of oral contraceptives and the IUD in adoescents. There were no serious complic…

Pathways to sexual risk taking among female adolescent detainees.

Sexual risk taking among female delinquents represents a significant public health problem. Research is needed to understand the pathways leading to sexual risk taking among this population. This study sought to address this issue by identifying and testing two pathways from child maltreatment to non-condom use among 329 White and 484 African American female adolescent detainees: a relational pathway and a substance use coping pathway. The relational pathway indicated that child maltreatment would be related to non-condom use via depressive self-concept and condom use self-efficacy. The substa

Perception of partner sexual history: Effects on safe-sex intentions.

OBJECTIVE: Sexual intercourse is a dyadic activity, and intentions to engage in safe sex vary across partners. Because pregnant and newly parenting adolescents and young adults are at high risk for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), it is important to understand sexual decision-making in this population. METHOD: This cross-sectional study examined how participants' own risk behavior and their partners' risk behavior influence perceptions of partner risk, and the impact of risk perceptions on condom use intentions and monogamy intentions in 296 pregnant adolescent and young adult couples

Dependency Traits, Relationship Power, and Health Risks in Women Receiving Sexually-Transmitted Infection Clinic Services.

In prior research, having traits consistent with a personality disorder has been shown to be related to substance use and high-risk sexual activity; however, few studies have examined relationships between dependency traits and health-jeopardizing behaviors. Individuals with traits consistent with dependent personality disorder may be more likely to be in a primary relationship characterized by unhealthy conditions, including physical abuse from a partner, low assertiveness in sexual situations, and partner infidelity. In addition, dependency traits may be associated with unhealthy coping (e.g

Agent-based computational model of the prevalence of gonococcal infections after the implementation of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis guidelines.

Recently, the first comprehensive guidelines were published for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for the prevention of HIV infection in populations with substantial risk of infection. Guidelines include a daily regimen of emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF/FTC) as well as condom usage during sexual activity. The relationship between the TDF/FTC intake regimen and condom usage is not yet fully understood. If men who have sex with men (MSM,) engage in high-risk sexual activities without using condoms when prescribed TDF/FTC they might be at an increased risk for other sexually trans…
