Diagnostic screening for subclinical celiac disease using a rapid test in children aged 2-4.

BACKGROUND: Our aim is to study the prevalence of subclinical celiac disease (CD) and analyze the diagnostic yield of a new rapid test in children aged 2-4. METHODS: We carried out a cross-sectional study in a sample population of children aged 2-4 from the same metropolitan area. We recruited apparently healthy subjects, and collected clinical, anthropometric, analytical, and serological variables. We also tested for anti-gliadin IgA and anti-transglutaminase IgG and IgA using a rapid immunochromatographic test CD1WB and CD2WB (Operon, Zaragoza, Spain). RESULTS: One hundred and ninety-eight

Macular pigment carotenoids in the retina and occipital cortex are related in humans.

OBJECTIVES: Lutein and zeaxanthin are dietary carotenoids that preferentially accumulate in the macular region of the retina. Together with meso-zeaxanthin, a conversion product of lutein in the macula, they form the macular pigment. Lutein is also the predominant carotenoid in human brain tissue and lutein status is associated with cognitive function in adults. The study objective was to evaluate the relationship between retinal and brain lutein and zeaxanthin in humans. METHODS: Donated brain tissue (occipital cortex and hippocampus) and matched retina were obtained from the National Diseas

Use of IL3 and chromatin-modifying reagents valproic acid and 5-aza-2'-deoxycytidine to affect mobilized peripheral blood CD34+ cell fate decisions.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Culture of blood CD34(+) cells with chromatin-modifying agents can lead to an increase in marrow repopulating cells and in the case of valproic acid increased erythroid cell colony formation. We undertook research to help understand what effects these reagents have on mobilized peripheral blood (MPB) CD34(+) cells. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Mobilized peripheral blood was obtained under informed consent and ethics committee approval from nine patients and allograft donors. Epigenetic modifiers valproic acid and 5-aza-2'-deoxycytidine were used singly or in combination w

Volitional chewing with a conscious effort alters and facilitates swallowing during feeding sequence.

The key objective of mastication is to form a food bolus suitable for smooth swallowing. However, chewing is usually performed without a conscious effort. Poor bolus formation can cause pharyngeal residue and suffocation in elderly individuals with reduced swallowing function. Therefore, chewing with a conscious effort may help the bolus to more easily pass the pharynx. This study aimed to clarify the impact of mastication with a conscious effort on the feeding sequence. Subjects included 25 dentulous volunteers who were informed and provided written consent. Lateral videofluoroscopy was perfo

Associating portal congestive gastropathy and hepatic fibrosis in hepatosplenic mansoni schistosomiasis.

Upper digestive bleeding is one of the most serious complications of mansoni schistosomiasis, and portal congestive gastropathy (PCG) is responsible for 25-30% of the cases of bleeding instead of bleeding due to esophageal varices. This study aimed to investigate the association between PCG with parameters of portal hypertension and the intensity of periportal fibrosis assessed by ultrasonography, in patients with mansoni schistosomiasis. A prospective study was made of 71 patients whether or not they had a history of upper digestive bleeding, and who had not been previously treated for portal

Analysis of urinary parameters as risk factors for nephrolithiasis in children with celiac disease.

PURPOSE: Intestinal malabsorption can cause urinary stone disease via enteric hyperoxaluria. It has been shown that celiac disease, a common malabsorption disorder, is associated with an increased risk of calcium oxalate kidney stones in adults. Since no published data are available in the pediatric population, we analyzed urinary excretion of electrolytes in children with celiac disease to assess the risk of nephrolithiasis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study population consisted of 115 children 1 to 16 years old (mean 5 years) with positive serological tests for celiac disease (anti-endomysiu

Incidence of perihepatic adhesions in ectopic gestation.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the incidence of perihepatic adhesions in patients undergoing surgery for ectopic pregnancy with the incidence in patients undergoing elective laparoscopic sterilization. Fitz-Hugh-Curtis syndrome is a perihepatitis that usually occurs as a complication of pelvic inflammatory disease. Perihepatic adhesions may be an aftereffect of the acute hepatic episode, and because the cause of ectopic gestation is thought to be salpingitis, women with an ectopic gestation may also have a higher prevalence of coexisting perihepatic adhesions. METHODS: We reviewed charts of 97 women w

Physical Literacy through Active plaY and environmental affordances in outdoor kindergarten settings: a multidimensional approach to Unveiling Potential (PLAY UP) - study protocol for a cluster-randomised trial.

INTRODUCTION: Outdoor active play is essential for children's health, well-being and holistic development. However, there is a lack of high-quality evidence on effective sustainable and scalable interventions that leverage outdoor play and environmental affordances to promote physical literacy, including motor competence, physical activity, engagement and motivation for movement in early childhood. In particular, limited research has examined how outdoor kindergarten environments can be intentionally used and optimised to support diverse forms of active play through social and other potential
