Microtubule-stabilizing drugs suppress convulsions in a C. elegans model of CAMSAP disorders.

Recessive, loss of function, genomic variants in CAMSAP1 and 2 (calmodulin-regulated spectrin-associated proteins 1 and 2) cause a neurodevelopmental seizure disorder in humans that currently lacks specific treatments. CAMSAP proteins stabilize dynamics of the minus-ends of microtubules and regulate regenerative signaling cascades. We explored microtubule-stabilizing drugs as potential therapeutic interventions using a convulsion assay in the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans. We found that animals with genetically disrupted ptrn-1 (the C. elegans homolog of CAMSAP1) exhibited elevated con

Incidence and prehospital management of convulsive status epilepticus in Martinique, a French Caribbean territory.

OBJECTIVE: Status epilepticus (SE) is an acute complication that can either occur in the course of epilepsy, or reflect an acute neurological or systemic disorder. SE incidence and associated mortality vary across regions and studied populations. There are no published data for the French overseas territories, including Martinique island where the population faces significant comorbidities and socioeconomic fragility. METHODS: This was a monocentric, retrospective, observational study conducted at the University Hospital of Martinique. All patients, managed by a mobile intensive care unit (MI

Clinical effect of non-convulsive electroconvulsive therapy combined with olanzapine in patients with schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the clinical effect of non-convulsive electroconvulsive therapy combined with olanzapine in schizophrenia patients. METHODS: From September 2021 to August 2023, a total of 112 patients with schizophrenia treated in our hospital were selected as the study participants. These patients were randomly divided into a control group and a research group, with 56 cases in each group. Patients in the control group were administered olanzapine tablets. Based on olanzapine tablets, patients in the research group received non-convulsive electroconvulsive therapy. The psychotic sympto

Curcumin attenuates neuroinflammation and improves cognitive function in a rat model of febrile convulsions.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of curcumin on neuroinflammation and cognitive function in a rat model of febrile convulsions (FC). This study was conducted on 10-day-old male Wistar rat pups, randomly assigned to four groups: Control, Curcumin, FC, and FC + Curcumin. FC were induced by placing the rats in a 44 °C water bath until convulsions occurred or for a maximum of 4 min. Curcumin (200 mg/kg/day) was administered intraperitoneally for seven consecutive days before FC induction. Neuroinflammation was assessed by measuring hippocampal and serum TNF-α and IL-1β levels using ELIS

A 39-year-old woman with transient convulsions and vision disturbances: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome is a rare neurological syndrome that refers to reversible subcortical vasogenic brain edema disorder in patients with acute neurological symptoms. CASE PRESENTATION: Whether there is a direct causal relationship between pancreatitis and posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome needs further study. We here report a 39-year-old Chinese woman who was diagnosed with pancreatitis followed by vision disturbance. The patient was finally diagnosed with posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome. On the basis of this rare case, we analyzed

Reducing Time to Electroencephalography in Pediatric Convulsive Status Epilepticus: A Quality Improvement Initiative.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric convulsive status epilepticus (CSE) is a neurological emergency utilizing electroencephalography (EEG) to guide therapeutic interventions. Guidelines recommend EEG initiation within one hour of seizure onset, but logistic and structural barriers often lead to significant delays. We aimed to reduce the time to EEG in pediatric CSE. METHODS: From 2017 to 2022, we implemented process improvements, including EEG order sets with priority-based timing guidance, technologist workflow changes, a satisfaction survey, and feedback from key stakeholder groups, over five plan-do-stu

Value of combining targeted emergency nursing with psychological nursing in children with febrile convulsions.

BACKGROUND: Febrile convulsions are a common pediatric emergency that imposes significant psychological stress on children and their families. Targeted emergency care and psychological nursing are widely applied in clinical practice, but their value and impact on the management of pediatric febrile convulsions are unclear. AIM: To determine the impact of targeted emergency nursing combined with psychological nursing on satisfaction in children with febrile convulsions. METHODS: Data from 111 children with febrile convulsions who received treatment at Nantong Maternal and Child Health Care Ho

N-acetyl cysteine: A new look at its effect on PTZ-induced convulsions.

INTRODUCTION/AIM: Epilepsy is widely investigated as a common neurological disease requiring pharmacologically effective agents. N-acetyl cysteine (NAC), has become a remarkable molecule with its role in both antioxidant and glutaminergic modulation. There are many points and processes waiting to be revealed regarding the role of NAC in epilepsy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Pentylenetetrazole (PTZ) was administered to induce seizures in a total number of 48 Sprague-Dawley rats. 35 mg/kg PTZ dose as a sub-convulsive dose was administered to 24 animals to monitor EEG changes, while 70 mg/kg PTZ dose
