A Rathke cleft cyst is considered to arise from the remnants of the Rathke pouch, and it consists of single cuboidal or columnar epithelium including cilia and goblet cells, which secrete mucus into the cyst. Magnetic resonance imaging characteristically shows a thin membranous cystic wall that enhances with Gd, and homogeneous intensity of the content suggesting fluid collection. Cases with an irregularly thickened and/or calcified cyst wall, presumably due to chronic inflammation of the wall, are rare. A 21-year-old woman presented with an extremely rare case of a solid and cystic Rathke cle

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is characterized by renal cyst formation, inflammation, and fibrosis. Macrophages infiltrate cystic kidneys, but the role of these and other inflammatory factors in disease progression are poorly understood. Here, we identified macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) as an important regulator of cyst growth in ADPKD. MIF was upregulated in cyst-lining epithelial cells in polycystin-1-deficient murine kidneys and accumulated in cyst fluid of human ADPKD kidneys. MIF promoted cystic epithelial cell proliferation by activating ERK, mTOR, a…

Spontaneous rupture of choledochal cysts is one of the rare complications, and can sometimes be the initial manifestation. It should be considered in the presence of bile-like fluid. A 10-year-old girl had acute onset of abdominal pain, vomiting, and elevated bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase, glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase and glutamic-pyruvic transaminase levels. There was no trauma in her history. In ultrasonography and computed tomography, dilated common bile duct, cystic mass of 10 x 6 cm, and free intraperitoneal fluid in abdominal cavity were demonstrated. Radiological methods, especia

INTRODUCTION: Hydatid disease of bone is very rare accounting for 0.5% - 3% of all localisations.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of a woman of 30 years who presented with posterior chest pain. The chest radiograph showed an extra-pulmonary mass associated with a lytic rib lesion. Thoracic ultrasound revealed a multiloculated soft tissue and fluid mass. CT scan showed a fluid filled costo-vertebral cyst. MRI identified extension into the spinal canal. Pathological examination of the surgically resected material confirmed the diagnosis.
CONCLUSIONS: This observation emphasises the role of MRI

Tarlov cysts are extradural meningeal cysts with a collection of cerebrospinal fluid that most often affects sacral nerve roots, causing chronic low back pain and radiculopathy. Still, there is no consensus regarding the best treatment for symptomatic cysts. We describe a patient who developed worsening lower back pain and radiculopathy after interventional drainage and surgical management. Medication and various procedures failed to relieve the pain. Subsequently, the patient received significant pain relief from spinal cord stimulation (SCS). This case provides evidence that SCS could be use

Bronchogenic cysts are commonly located in the middle mediastinal compartment as fluid-filled cysts and thymoma is one of the most common neoplasms in the anterior mediastinum in adult cases. For two cases of asymptomatic, incidentally discovered anterior mediastinal soft tissue mass in adults, we planned to perform complete thymectomy with minimally invasive techniques based on the guidelines of International Thymic Malignancy Interest Group. Their pathological finding revealed cystic lesions lined by ciliated epithelium and this supported the diagnosis of bronchogenic cyst rather than thymic

Parathyroid cysts are a relatively rare cause of neck swelling, and their anatomo-pathological and clinical features are still under debate. Two types of parathyroid cysts have been recognized: the non-functioning or essential forms, which are more frequent, and the adenomatous or functioning parathyroid cysts, which are rarer and cause hyperparathyroidism. Two cases of parathyroid cysts are reported and the treatment is described bearing in mind the various therapeutic procedures proposed in the literature. Attention is focused on pre-operative differential diagnosis from other masses, in the

Human ovarian cyst glycoproteins (HOC, cyst gps) isolated from pseudomucinous type of human ovarian cyst fluids is one of the richest and pioneer sources for studying biosynthesis, structures and functional roles of blood group ABH, Lea,b,x,y, sLea and sLex active glycoproteins. After 70+ years of exploration, four top highlights are shared. (i) an updated concept of glycotopes and their internal structures in cyst gps was composited; (ii) the unknown codes of new genes in secreted cyst gps were unlocked as Lex and Ley; (iii) recognition profiles of cyst glycans and a sialic acid-rich (18%) gl…

A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) study of the normal pineal gland and pineal simple cysts was performed in 762 cases. A fine section technique (maximum 3 millimeters) enabled most of the times the identifying of a normal pineal in addition to demonstrating that a pineal without any cyst shows an isointense signal in T1 and T2 which, in turn, is enhanced following gadolinium. The measure of the normal pineal was of about 6.1 millimeters in its diameter length. Pineal simple cysts were observed in a 2.6% frequency in relation to the whole series (762 cases); however reaches 6.1% when only the

Four patients with giant cysts, one cyst with a diameter of 55 mm, were treated with a 30-day course of praziquantel (Biltricide; Bayer-Miles) 50 mg/kg/d. One patient had corticosteroids administered simultaneously. All 4 patients had anticonvulsant cover. In all cases there was rapid and complete resolution of the cysts. In 2 patients this occurred within 30 days. The computed tomographic features of giant cysticercal cysts are: thin walled cystic lesions containing clear fluid, localised thickening of the wall (probably representing the scolex), absence of pericyst oedema, and the presence o

OBJECTIVES: Idiopathic intracranial hypertension refers to cases of intracranial hypertension and normal brain parenchyma without ventriculomegaly or any kind of mass lesion. Perineural cysts are cerebrospinal fluid-filled cysts that usually arise from nerve roots near the dorsal ganglia. Often asymptomatic, they rarely cause mass effect symptoms. The association of these conditions is discussed herein.
METHODS: We describe 2 patients with idiopathic intracranial hypertension and symptomatic sacral perineural cysts. In both cases the treatment of idiopathic intracranial hypertension ameliorat

The differential diagnosis of bone tumors in the talus is broad and includes both benign and malignant conditions. Metastases, although very rare, are one of these conditions. The typical nonspecific clinical and radiological presentations of metastases are a diagnostic challenge, and a high level of suspicion is needed in order to perform an adequate diagnostic approach. Moreover, they can present with features which have classically been associated with benign conditions such as fluid-fluid levels. We present a rare case of talar metastasis of a mucinous pulmonary adenocarcinoma that present

BACKGROUND: Neuroenteric cysts are rare cystic benign neoplasms of the central nervous system most often located in the spinal cord and rarely, intracranially. The nonspecific neuroimaging features make management planning potentially challenging. We present a case of a radiologically misdiagnosed neurenteric cyst with a complicated course.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 13-year-old girl presented with a 6-month history of headache, tinnitus, and dizziness. Initial magnetic resonance images (MRIs) were indistinguishable from a pineal arachnoid cyst with aqueductal stenosis and hydrocephalus. Cyst fenest

INTRODUCTION: Non-parasitic simple hepatic cyst is a very common type of benign liver disease, occurring in approximately 1-5% of the general population. These cysts are usually asymptomatic and are conservatively followed up without treatment. Some of these cysts, however, are associated with complications, including infection, hemorrhage, obstructive jaundice, portal hypertension, and rupture.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 74-year-old woman was transferred to our trauma center with epigastric pain after being knocked down by a cultivator. An abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan showed fluid co

This report describes a rare case of femoral nerve paresthesia caused by an acetabular paralabral cyst of the hip joint. A 68-year-old woman presented with a 6-month history of right hip pain and paresthesia along the anterior thigh and radiating down to the anterior aspect of the knee. Radiography showed osteoarthritis with a narrowed joint space in the right hip joint. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a cyst with low T1- and high T2-weighted signal intensity arising from a labral tear at the anterior aspect of the acetabulum. The cyst was connected to the joint space and displaced the femor

Among cases of soft tissue tumours arising between the inferior angle of the scapula and thoracic wall, scapulothoracic bursitis has rarely been reported. All the reported cases were surgically treated and there have been no reports about the results of conservative treatment observed for a long period. Therefore, we retrospectively evaluated the clinical findings, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features, and treatment procedures in order to elucidate the differential diagnosis for, and efficacy of, conservative treatment. The patients were those who consulted our department of orthopedic su

The prevalence of calcified cysts and the significance of calcification as a sign of cyst inactivity in cystic echinococcosis (CE) was evaluated. Seventy-eight patients (36 females, 42 males, mean age 40.8 +/- 16.9 years) with CE, having a total of 137 abdominal cysts (116 hepatic, three splenic, one renal and 17 peritoneal cysts), were diagnosed and followed-up by ultrasound during and after albendazole treatment or as part of the watch-and-wait approach recording changes in the cyst wall and content. In 48 patients with 94 cysts, computed tomography (CT) imaging was additionally available an

A dog with a history of diarrhea and dyschezia exhibited an oval-shaped, soft-tissue opacity mass in the abdomen on radiographs. CT examination revealed a large fluid-filled structure displacing the urinary bladder, prostate, and colon. The mass had continuity with the prostate; therefore, it was tentatively diagnosed as a paraprostatic cyst. Cytologic examination was performed and the mass was considered a non-inflammatory cyst. However, after surgery, histopathologic examination revealed a necrotic, inflamed cystic lipoma. This case shows that unusual intra-abdominal lipomas may have a cysti

A 45-year-old woman complained of a progressive 2-month history of bilateral hearing impairment and diplopia on upward gaze. She had a history of a recurrent pineal region ganglioglioma with repeated tumor excision, adjuvant radiotherapy, and a ventriculo-peritoneal shunt performed 12 years prior. Subsequent imaging studies 6 years ago showed a pineal region cyst with progressive increase in size and a Rickham reservoir (Codman; Johnson & Johnson, Raynham, MA) was placed for percutaneous cyst fluid aspiration. The size of the cystic lesion remained static upon follow-up CT scans for several ye…

MRI was used to evaluate inflammatory synovial processes in 53 patients over a 4-year period. Multiple disease processes were imaged, including: rheumatoid arthritis [n = 12], osteochondromatosis [n = 6], bursal abnormalities [n = 17], ganglion cyst [n = 1], meniscal cyst [n = 5], hemophilia [n = 1], and septic arthritis [n = 11]. The soft tissue contrast resolution of MRI and its multiplanar capability makes it particularly suitable for evaluating masslike or fluid inflammatory processes for diagnostic purposes, to determine extent of disease, and in some cases, to determine the composition o
