Marking word boundaries to improve the intelligibility of the speech of the deaf.

Speech of deaf talkers has often been characterized as staccato, leading to the perception of improper grouping of syllables. In an attempt to compensate for this syllabication, word boundaries of 30 sentences spoken by 10 deaf children were acoustically marked by means of silent pauses with a duration of 160 ms inserted between words. Subsequent tests with normal-hearing listeners demonstrated that after insertion of pauses the intelligibility of the sentences increased significantly (p less than .01) from 27% to 31%. A control measure showed that this increase was not merely due to a general

Modifications in deaf children's vowel production: perceptual evidence.

This study examined the perceived changes in vowel articulation by profoundly deaf children as a function of the method of teaching: with visual feedback provided by the Computer Vowel Trainer (CVT) vs conventional methods. The assessment carried out by experienced listeners consisted in marking the sounds heard on the vowel quadrilateral. It was found that changes in perception were feedback and age dependent: younger children taught with the CVT were perceived as displaying more mobility in articulation and they approximated more closely the target vowels than their control counterparts or o

A study of 250 patients referred to a department of psychiatry for the deaf.

250 patients referred to a department of psychiatry for the deaf were selected by random sampling and studied. The results underline the need for specialised services for deaf patients of all types, not only those who communicate solely by manual methods. Patients are referred to this department suffering from mental illness and communication disorders, as well as from problems related to their deafness. Some of the difficulties of managing a supra-regional service are discussed.

Early identification of deaf babies and children in northern Israel.

Mass screening for hearing loss is established in Israel early in the first year of life, in the free Mother and Child Welfare Clinics, leading to early detection and rehabilitation of almost all the deaf babies. At risk newborns are tested within the first three months of age. Impedance audiometry should be widely implemented in pre- and early school screenings, to detect the minor conductive hearing losses.

The progression of hearing loss in the early stages of sudden deafness.

The pathogenesis of sudden deafness is still not known. Therefore, to clarify its pathophysiology, it is important to know whether the progression of hearing loss occurs in the early stage of sudden deafness. The subjects were 11 patients with sudden deafness showing the progression of hearing loss by pure tone audiometry after the onset of the initial attack of hearing loss. The progression of hearing loss was mostly observed within 4-7 days after the onset of the initial attack. Average hearing loss in initial audiometry was severe and the recovery was poor in the majority of cases. An explo…

The vestibular aqueduct in congenital deafness: evaluation by the axial projection.

Thirty-two patients with congenital neurosensory hearing loss demonstrated dilatation of the peripheral limb of the vestibular aqueduct as visualized on pluridirectional tomograms. Multiple additional anomalies involving most frequently the cochlea (15 patients) but also the ossicles (three patients) or vestibule (one patient) were associated. The axial-pyramidal (Poschl) projection was of great value in evaluation of the vestibular aqueduct and cochlea. The technique, clinical correlation, and surgical implications are discussed.

Field trials of a tactile acoustic monitor for the profoundly deaf.

Profoundly deaf subjects were given information about sound level in their environment by means of a body-worn unit coupled to a small vibrator worn on the finger. Results of trials on 19 adults are discussed. The Tactile Acoustic Monitor was found to be useful for identifying domestic sounds by means of their distinctive timing patterns. No significant overall improvement in subject's control of voice level was observed, although some subjects found that having a voice level monitor gave them greater confidence to join conversations. Various design improvements were suggested by the trials. M
