Occupational exposure of hairdressers to hair dyes has been associated with the development of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) involving the hands. p-Phenylenediamine (PPD) and toluene-2,5-diamine (PTD) have been implicated as important occupational contact allergens. To conduct a quantitative risk assessment for the induction of contact sensitization to hair dyes in hairdressers, available data from hand rinsing studies following typical occupational exposure conditions to PPD, PTD and resorcinol were assessed. By accounting for wet work, uneven exposure and inter-individual variability for

We describe a case of anaphylaxis and allergic contact urticaria from occupational airborne exposure to HBTU (o-(benzotriazol-1-yl)-N,N,N',N'-tetramethyluronium hexafluorophosphate), which is a chemical used widely for solid and solution-phase peptide synthesis. Previously, the use of this chemical has been associated with occupational asthma, allergic contact urticaria and allergic contact dermatitis in individual cases, but not with anaphylaxis. Our diagnoses were based on the clinical symptoms, positive skin prick test (SPT) and positive skin provocation test to HBTU. The positive SPT indic

BACKGROUND: Hand eczema (HE) is the most frequently occurring occupational skin disease. However, studies on non-occupational wet exposure, occupations not considered as high-risk, and socioeconomic factors regarding HE are scarce.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the association between HE and occupational and non-occupational wet exposure and work-related factors in the Dutch general population.
METHODS: Within the Lifelines Cohort Study, participants with HE were identified by a digital, add-on questionnaire that included questions regarding exposure. Data on work-related and socioeconomic fact

In occupational dermatology, repeat patch testing is a frequent occurrence when an expert opinion is required. As a result, discrepancies in test results may affect the legal position in respect of insurance and a reduction in the level of disability. The strip patch test (SPT) supports the diagnosis of allergic contact dermatitis when a weak sensitization is present or when a weak sensitizer with poor epidermal penetration is involved leading to a false-negative patch test result. We report on a 30-year-old man working as an industrial mechanic from 1995 to 2006. After approval of an occupati

The different occupational health systems and legislations in the countries across Europe makes it difficult for one to sketch a detailed picture for the whole continent. Reporting bias and selection bias have a considerable impact on the perceived prevalence and incidence, while reliable data are hard to extract from official registries. Data from one region in Germany will serve as an example. Comparison with data from other sources yields an estimate of 0.7 to 1.5 cases per 1,000 per year as a gross average, while the problem in specific occupational groups is more pronounced. Reliable data

In order to confirm the mechanism of skin sensitization to propacetamol, a pro-drug of acetaminophen, 3 patients with allergic contact dermatitis from propacetamol were patch tested with N,N-diethylglycine phenyl ester, an activated form of N,N-diethylglycine. Positive patch tests were observed in all the patients at 10% in pet., while 20 control patients remained negative. This strongly suggests that propacetamol is acting as an activated form of N,N-diethylglycine, transferring this part of the molecule to nucleophilic residues of proteins. This also explains why reactions to acetaminophen h

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Occupational contact urticaria (OCU) is an immediate-type skin reaction triggered by chemicals or proteins encountered in the workplace. It is classified as either nonimmunologic (irritant) or immunologic (IgE-mediated), which differ in pathogenesis, diagnostic approach, and clinical severity. Immunologic OCU may present with generalized urticaria and even anaphylaxis. We conducted a systematic narrative review to provide an updated overview of OCU, integrating findings from a structured literature search (2017-2025) with expert clinical interpretation. This review synthesiz

Artificial nail modelling systems (ANMS), encompassing artificial nails and long-lasting nail polish, are sources of acrylate exposure in beauticians and users of ANMS. Hairdressers' exposure to ANMS from self-use and occupational exposure is currently unknown. In 2020 a questionnaire was sent to all hairdressers graduating during 2008 to 2018 in Denmark (n = 4,830). Self-use of ANMS was reported by 87.6% of respondents (1,251/1,428), and application of ANMS to others was reported by 22.1% (316/1,428). Of these, application to others was performed in a salon by 37.1% (109/294), privately by 51

Work-related skin problems are frequent and mainly affect the hands. They can be approached by looking for indications of the 3 principal underlying types of dermatitis: irritant, allergic, or chronic. Irritation and contact allergy are closely associated: the irritation facilitates the flowering of the allergy. Skin irritation due to working conditions is often multi-causal and repetitive. Cutaneous atopy--but not that which is only respiratory or mucosal--is the main genetic risk factor for the development of a work-related skin disease. The characteristics of irritation and allergy tend to

Among 4600 patients tested in 5 years (1973--77), 5.02% of them (231 cases) presented positivity to Benzidine. Of them 16.4% (38 cases) showed concomitant sensitization to one or more allergens of the tested substances of p-amino compounds group. Among the patients who suffered from clinically diagnosed occupational contact dermatitis and showed a positive reaction to Benzidine, 66% of them showed positive reactions to Benzidine as a unique patch-test positivity, whereas 34% of them reacted to Benzidine and to other allergens as well. The occupations where a sensitization to other allergens as
