Hospital mortality due to infective endocarditis: Analysis of risk factors in a developing country.

INTRODUCTION: Infective endocarditis (IE) is a disease with high mortality that, in recent decades, has experienced changes in its epidemiology, pathogenesis, and microbiology. Therefore, understanding its landscape and risk factors for mortality is essential. OBJECTIVE: To identify the epidemiological, clinical, laboratory, etiological, and echocardiographic profile of patients hospitalized with IE and to determine predictors for in-hospital mortality. METHODS: This was a retrospective observational study that analyzed medical records of patients hospitalized for IE in a tertiary center fro

The epidemiology and outcomes of adult in-hospital cardiac arrest in a high-income developing country.

AIM: In-Hospital Cardiac Arrest (IHCA) is a significant burden on healthcare worldwide. Outcomes of IHCA are worse in developing countries compared with developed ones. We aimed to study the epidemiology and factors determining outcomes in adult IHCA in a high income developing country. METHODS: We abstracted prospectively collected data of adult patients admitted to our institution over a three-year period who suffered a cardiac arrest. We analysed patient demographics, arrest characteristics, including response time, initial rhythm and code duration. Pre-arrest vital signs, primary diagnose…

Development of the "National Asbestos Profile" to Eliminate Asbestos-Related Diseases in 195 Countries.

Worldwide, 230,000+ people die annually from asbestos-related diseases (ARDs). The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that countries develop a National Asbestos Profile (NAP) to eliminate ARDs. For 195 countries, we assessed the global status of NAPs (A: bona fide NAP, B: proxy NAP, C: relevant published information, D: no relevant information) by national income (HI: high, UMI: upper-middle, LMI: lower-middle, LI: low), asbestos bans (banned, no-ban) and public data availability. Fourteen (7% of 195) countries were category A (having a bona fide NAP), while 98, 51 and 32 countries wer

Impact of COVID-19 on stock market efficiency: Evidence from developed countries.

This study investigates the impact of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on stock market efficiency for six hard-hit developed countries, namely, the United States (US), Spain, the United Kingdom (UK), Italy, France, and Germany. Applying the wild bootstrap automatic variance ratio test on daily stock market data from July 29, 2019 to January 25, 2021, it is found that all stock markets used in this study deviate from market efficiency during some periods of the pandemic. Deviations from market efficiency are seen more in the stock markets of the US and UK during the COVID-19 outbreak t

Better Groundwork Can Avoid Troubled Waters: A Developing Country Perspective on Drowning.

OBJECTIVE: Drowning is a leading cause of unintentional injury-related death in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This study was undertaken to know the epidemiology, intensive care needs and predictors of outcome of children with drowning. METHODS: Records of children below 12 years admitted with drowning to the emergency room and/or paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) of a tertiary care hospital in North India were retrospectively analysed. 'Favourable outcome' was defined as normal neurological status at discharge (normal cognition and no motor deficits) and 'unfavourable outcome'

Gunshot injury to spine: An institutional experience of management and complications from a developing country.

PURPOSE: Gunshot wounds are the second leading cause of spinal cord injuries. Surgical intervention for gunshot injury to the spine carries a high rate of complications. There is a scarcity of data on civilian gunshot injuries to the spine in Pakistan. Approximately 60 cases over the last 10 years have been recoded, with unusual presentation and neurological recovery. Thus it is imperative to fill this gap in data, by reviewing cases of civilian gunshot injuries to spine presenting at a tertiary care hospital (Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi). METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort stu

Overview and outcome of Hodgkin's Lymphoma: Experience of a single developing country's oncology centre.

Hodgkin's Lymphoma (HL) reveals variable epidemiological and clinico-pathological features in different geographical locations. In this retrospective study, we aimed to assess the epidemiological and clinic-pathological features, and outcome of HL patients treated at one hemato-oncology centre in Erbil, northern Iraq. Medical records of 103 HL patients treated over more than six years were reviewed. Treatment outcome was evaluated by measuring the 5-year overall and progression-free survival rates. The median age of patients was 23 years, children up to 17 years constituted 31.1%, and male to

Outcomes in juvenile onset lupus: single center cohort from a developing country.

Introduction About 10-20% of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients have onset in childhood and have more severe organ involvement. Survival of juvenile SLE patients is improving worldwide. Long-term data of childhood onset SLE from developing countries is scarce. Methods Clinical and laboratory data at initial presentation and follow-up visits were retrieved from clinic files, hospital information system and personal interviews. Treatment received, complications, flares, outcomes and death were recorded. Survival was calculated using Kaplan-Meier survival curves and regression analysis w…

Should the governments of 'developed' countries be held responsible for equalizing the indigenous health gap?

Across the globe there is significant variation between and within indigenous populations in terms of world view, culture, and socio-political forces. However, many indigenous groups do share a striking commonality: greater rates of non-communicable diseases and shorter life expectancies than non-indigenous compatriots. Notably, this health gap persists for 'developed' countries, including Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United States. The question of who is responsible for equalizing the gap is complicated. Using Australia as an exemplar context, this commentary will present arguments
