The Japan Study Group of Manometry of the Digestive Tract in Childhood was organized in 1975. The 14th meeting was held in February 1984. During the meeting, the technique of anorectal manometry was established and the criteria of positive recto-anal reflex was defined. The mechanism of recto-anal reflex has been studied, but the details of it remain obscure. In a case of massive intestinal haemorrhage during typhoid fever the bleeding area was located by angiography to the superior mesenteric artery, and excision of the ileo-colonic junction was performed. Pathological study of the lesions showed necrosis of Peyer's plaques resulting in section of small submucosal arterioles. The necrosis itself was caused by initially endothelial lesions, later completed by thrombosis. The complication is exceptional. Using small (50-100 micrometer) and large (800-1000 micrometer) polystyrene particles as a marker substance, transit through the gastrointestinal tract of the rabbit was studied during the formation of hard and soft faeces (caecotrophe). Both fractions of the marker were transported at an equal rate during soft faeces formation. During the formation of hard faeces a significantly higher amount of small particles was present in the caecum, whereas in the distal colon and rectum the number of large particles was elevated significantly.

The authors studied the variations of ascorbic acid levels in white blood cells and plasma by Denson-Bowers' method in 20 normal individuals (Group I) and 36 schistosoma patients with hepatosplenic disease with and without gastrointestinal haemorrhage (Groups II and III, including 18 patients each). In the case reported pulmonary Legionella infection was diagnosed by sputum cultures even though immunofluorescence tests were negative. The patient had positive Coomb's test due to circulating auto-antibodies which disappeared after he recovered. The course of the disease was prolonged by perforation of the coecum requiring excision of the colon and terminal ileostomy. Erythromycin had to be given intravenously. Pathological examination of the digestive tract lesions showed inflammatory colitis with presence of Legionella pneumophilia which seemed to have been responsible for the complication

The work is devoted to the results of the treatment of 535 patients with diverticula of the duodenum, associated diseases being found in 15% of cases. The clinical picture is dependent on the relationship of the diseases: which of them is the leading one at the moment, are they concomitant or competing. The author comes to the conclusion that planned operation of full volume is necessary and expedient. The conclusion is supported by good immediate and late results.

The diagnosis, treatment and follow-up data for patients with malignant solitary extramedullary plasmacytoma of the upper respiratory and digestive tracts for the period from 1949 to 1975 are presented. The neoplasm developed in the nasal fossae in 3 patients; in the maxillary sinuses in 2; in the supraglottic region in 1; and in the tonsillar fossa in 1. Curative radiation therapy is recommended after the diagnosis is established by biopsy examination only. In the present series, this practice resulted in complete regression of the tumors in all of the patients, with restoration of functions

In 11 years experience (67-78) we studied the importance of endoscopy in HDA. Were carried out 8300 esophagogastroduodenal endoscopies of which 2837 were HDA. The main reasons to follow these studies were: 1) Diagnostic of the HDA location; 2) Diagnostic of type of injury; 3) Injury intensity. Referring to the findings 30% were duodenal ulcer; 27% hemorrhagic gastritis; 17% gastric ulcer and 10% were due to VE.
