Variations of structural-functional coupling in post-traumatic stress disorder are associated with underlying molecular and transcriptional features.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a growing health problem whose neurobiology remains incompletely understood. Neuroimaging is useful in probing PTSD-related brain dysfunction, and techniques continue to evolve. Structural-functional coupling (SFC) offers a novel integrated perspective on PTSD neurobiology. We sought to define unique SFC alterations in PTSD and explore their associations with clinical symptoms, brain molecular architecture, and gene expression. METHODS: We studied 61 PTSD patients and 62 trauma-exposed non-PTSD controls (TENC) recruited from earthquake surv

Numerical simulation of fracture patterns in roof strata with different thicknesses.

Roof breaking is the root cause of rock burst and mine earthquake. However, the classical "thin plate theory" and "thick plate theory" cannot fully reveal the mechanical mechanism of the influence of roof thickness-span ratio on the fracture mode. In this paper, based on the cohesive element technology, the mechanical behavior of cohesive element failure was studied according to the maximum nominal stress criterion and BK fracture criterion, and the fracture mechanical behavior of roofs with different thicknesses fixed on four sides under uniform load was numerically simulated. The fracture pa

A comparison of ICD-11 and DSM-5 criteria of PTSD among Chinese trauma-exposed adolescent samples.

This study aimed at comparing the prevalence and comorbidity differences of PTSD according to ICD-11 and DSM-5 definitions across two Chinese adolescent trauma-exposed samples. A total of 1,201 students exposed to earthquake and 559 students from vocational schools exposed to potentially traumatic events were included in this study. The PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 was used to measure PTSD symptoms. The MDD and GAD subscales of the Revised Children's Anxiety and Depression Scale were used to measure major depression disorder (MDD) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) symptoms. No significant PTS

Sustainable surgical resource initiative for Haiti: the SSRI-Haiti project.

In response to the 2010 earthquake and subsequent cholera epidemic, St Luke's Medical Center was established in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Here, we describe its inception and evolution to include an intensive care unit and two operating rooms, as well as the staffing, training and experiential learning activities, which helped St Luke's become a sustainable surgical resource. We describe a three-phase model for establishing a sustainable surgical centre in Haiti (build facility and acquire equipment; train staff and perform surgeries; provide continued education and expansion including regular spe

Tsunami evacuation buildings and evacuation planning in Banda Aceh, Indonesia.

Indonesia, a country of more than 17,000 islands, is exposed to many hazards. A magnitude 9.1 earthquake struck off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, on December 26, 2004. It triggered a series of tsunami waves that spread across the Indian Ocean causing damage in 11 countries. Banda Aceh, the capital city of Aceh Province, was among the most damaged. More than 31,000 people were killed. At the time, there were no early warning systems nor evacuation buildings that could provide safe refuge for residents. Since then, four tsunami evacuation buildings (TEBs) have been constructed in the Meuraxa

24-hour-restraint stress induces long-term depressive-like phenotypes in mice.

There is an increasing risk of mental disorders, such as acute stress disorder (ASD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression among survivors who were trapped in rubble during earthquake. Such long-term impaction of a single acute restraint stress has not been extensively explored. In this study, we subjected mice to 24-hour-restraint to simulate the trapping episode, and investigated the acute (2 days after the restraint) and long-term (35 days after the restraint) impacts. Surprisingly, we found that the mice displayed depression-like behaviors, decreased glucose uptake in brain

Predictors of severe psychological distress trajectory after nuclear disaster: evidence from the Fukushima Health Management Survey.

OBJECTIVES: The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident, which occurred after the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami in March 2011, may have a considerable long-term impact on the lives of area residents. The aims of this study were to determine the trajectories of psychological distress using 3-year consecutive data, and to find predictive factors of severe distress that may also prove useful for public health intervention. METHODS: Data were obtained on 12 371 residents who were registered in the municipalities categorised as complete evacuation areas for 3 years after the disas

Are natural disasters in early childhood associated with mental health and substance use disorders as an adult?

Understanding factors that influence risk for mental health and substance use disorders is critical to improve population health and reduce social costs imposed by these disorders. We examine the impact of experiencing a natural disaster-a serious fire, tornado, flood, earthquake, or hurricane-by age five on adult mental health and substance use disorders. The analysis uses data from the 2004 to 2005 National Epidemiologic Survey of Alcohol and Related Conditions. The analysis sample includes 27,129 individuals ages 21-64 years. We also exploit information on parenting strategies to study how

Cesium distribution and phases in proxy experiments on the incineration of radioactively contaminated waste from the Fukushima area.

After the March 11, 2011 Tohoku earthquake and Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant accident, incineration was initially adopted as an effective technique for the treatment of post-disaster wastes. Accordingly, considerable amounts of radioactively contaminated residues were immediately generated through incineration. The level of radioactivity associated with radiocesium in the incineration ash residues (bottom ash and fly ash) became significantly high (several thousand to 100,000 Bq/kg) as a result of this treatment. In order to understand the modes of occurrence of radiocesium, bottom ash produ

Geographic clustering of the secondary sex ratio in Japan: association with demographic attributes.

The secondary sex ratio (SSR) has been suggested to decrease with adverse physical and psychological environments. Previous studies have focused on reduced SSR under adverse conditions, such as war, terrorism attack and earthquake, but few studies have investigated fluctuations in SSR in moderately adverse environments. This study analysed municipality-level vital statistics records in Japan collected between 1998 and 2002 to identify high-SSR clusters and low-SSR clusters with spatial-scan statistics. In 999 runs of simulation, high- and low-SSR clusters were detected but fewer than 950 times

Barriers and solutions to healthcare access in disaster-affected communities in the Philippines: a convergent parallel mixed-methods study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: The Philippines is among the most disaster-prone countries globally, with recurrent typhoons, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions significantly disrupting healthcare delivery, particularly in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas. Despite existing disaster risk reduction frameworks, gaps persist in ensuring equitable and continuous access to healthcare during and after disasters. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This study will employ a convergent parallel mixed-methods design to assess barriers to healthcare access and identify context-specific solutions in disaster-affected comm…

Association between steatotic liver disease and post-traumatic stress symptoms in the Fukushima health management survey.

We investigated the association of steatotic liver disease (SLD) and metabolic dysfunction-associated SLD (MASLD) with the occurrence of post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) after the Great East Japan Earthquake in participants of the Fukushima Health Management Survey (FMHS), a cohort that was initiated after the disaster. This cohort study used data from the FMHS (2011–2018) and included 16,392 participants aged 40–90 years (7505 men and 8,887 women) who were able to be assessed for PTSS. SLD was defined by the fatty liver index. To further identify the association between PTSS and SLD/MASL

Flexible joints for seismic-resilient design of masonry-infilled RC frames.

Masonry infills are among the most seismically vulnerable components in reinforced concrete frame structures. One promising mitigation strategy involves the use of rubber joints, which has shown potential in prior studies. However, further experimental and numerical investigations are needed to fully understand their effectiveness under realistic seismic conditions and to support evidence-based design. To address this, the EU-funded H2020 project FLExible JOInts for seismic-resilient design of masonry-infilled RC frames (FLEJOI) was conducted within the Engineering Research Infrastructures for

BACKGROUND: Childbirth posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) poses significant challenges, impacting both mothers and infants. This work investigates whether childbirth PTSD is less recognized than PTSD caused by other index events. METHODS: In two preregistered experimens we investigated the public and professional perception of PTSD resulting from childbirth compared to other traumatic events (i.e., sexual assault, car accident, terror attack, and an earthquake). FINDINGS: Study 1, conducted among the general population in the U.S. revealed that a woman depicted as experiencing PTSD symptom

Emergency Responses and Health Consequences after the Fukushima Accident; Evacuation and Relocation.

The Fukushima accident was a compounding disaster following the strong earthquake and huge tsunami. The direct health effects of radiation were relatively well controlled considering the severity of the accident, not only among emergency workers but also residents. Other serious health issues include deaths during evacuation, collapse of the radiation emergency medical system, increased mortality among displaced elderly people and public healthcare issues in Fukushima residents. The Fukushima mental health and lifestyle survey disclosed that the Fukushima accident caused severe psychological d

Charting the Course to Universal Health in the Americas: Cristian Morales PhD, PAHO/WHO Representative in Cuba.

After leaving Chile during the Pinochet era, Dr Morales studied economics, health administration and international health at the University of Montreal. But his baptism in the field came in Haiti, where he was first PAHO advisor to the health ministry, and then for five years was responsible for human resources and health economics in the PAHO offices in the capital of Port-au-Prince. He was at his post during the flooding in Gonaïves, five hurricanes, the 2010 earthquake and the ensuing cholera epidemic-doubtless the most dramatic and complex times for the country's health in recent history.

Trauma or growth after a natural disaster? The mediating role of rumination processes.

The aim of this study was to test a cognitive model of posttraumatic symptoms (PTS) and posttraumatic growth (PTG) after exposure to a natural disaster. It was hypothesized that although subjective severity of trauma would be related to the severity of PTS, this relation would be mediated by brooding and cognitive strategies related to the presence of repetitive negative content in thoughts. Furthermore, the relation between severity and PTG would be fully mediated by deliberate rumination (DR), cognitive strategies related to conscious efforts focused on handling the event. To evaluate the co
