Burnout among postgraduate medical trainees in Lebanon: experiences and prevention strategies.

Burnout is a common problem that negatively impacts the well-being of postgraduate medical trainees. The study aims to explore trainees' experiences of burnout in different specialties and generate potential strategies for prevention. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with trainees at a tertiary medical center. The inclusion criteria included residents and fellows practicing in the medical center irrespective of gender, age, specialty, and year of training. There were 32 residents classified as surgical specialty versus non-surgical specialty. Interview domains revolved around understa

The history and evolution of pediatric ophthalmology training: celebrating 50 years of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus.

In recognition of the 50th anniversary of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS), we present the history and evolution of pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus training in the United States and Canada. Using historical records, AAPOS charter member interviews, and a program director survey, we present the timeline of key events and our training history. Pioneers in Canada and the United States established the first pediatric ophthalmology preceptorships. These preceptorships and the programs founded by their trainees evolved into modern fellowship programs

"Stepping Out of a Comfort Zone": Evaluating the Impact of a Leadership Skills Curriculum on Surgical Residents' Transition to Senior Roles.

OBJECTIVE: We previously designed and implemented a 4-part leadership skills curriculum for rising senior general surgery resident physicians at 2 institutions. To evaluate the utility of this curriculum, we explored participants' perceptions about how it impacted their transition to senior resident roles. DESIGN: Semi-structured interviews were performed with residents who previously participated in our leadership curriculum and then completed one of their first rotations as a clinical team leader. Transcripts were analyzed inductively, and thematic analysis performed. A conceptual model was

Trainee Perspectives After Nonvoluntary Plastic Surgery Program Closures: Lessons Learned and Steps Forward.

BACKGROUND: In the last decade, only 3 plastic surgery programs have faced nonvoluntary closure by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education. These closures all occurred unexpectedly in April 2021 and affected 23 trainees. Although the dust has largely settled from this event, the insights of the affected trainees remain uncharacterized. METHODS: The Program Closure Working Group of the American Society of Plastic Surgery's Resident Council created a 30-item questionnaire and distributed it to displaced trainees 1 year after program closures to capture their perspectives. RESUL

Implementation of a Palliative Surgical Oncology Rotation to Complex General Surgical Oncology Fellowship Training.

BACKGROUND: Palliative care is an important component of global oncology care, and palliative surgical oncology is becoming an increasingly significant part of surgical oncology practice. Fellows in complex general surgical oncology (CGSO) can anticipate palliative surgical oncology to represent approximately 25-30% of their practice. As such, education in this area is critical during CGSO Fellowship to properly prepare the trainees to enter their practice. Unfortunately, there is evidence to suggest the training in surgical palliative care is not as deliberate as necessary to achieve these tr

The impact of extended reality simulators on ophthalmic surgical training and performance: a systematic review and meta-analysis of 17,623 eyes.

BACKGROUND: Extended reality (XR) simulators, including virtual reality and augmented reality, hold significant promise for enhancing surgical training by providing trainees with a controlled practice environment. This is particularly vital in microsurgery, where the steep learning curve and the challenge of mastering surgical skills are significant. Despite notable advancements in XR technology, its role in ophthalmic surgical training remains uncertain. METHODS: In our systematic review and meta-analysis, eight electronic databases were searched, and studies were evaluated against predefine

Disrupting the Master Narrative in Academic Biology as LGBTQ+ Ph.D. Students: Learning, Teaching, and Conducting Research.

LGBTQ+ individuals face discrimination and stigma in academic biology. These challenges are likely magnified for graduate students. However, there have been no studies documenting the experiences of LGBTQ+ life sciences graduate students. To address this gap, we conducted an interview study of 22 biology PhD students from 13 universities across the United States who identify as LGBTQ+. We used the master narrative framework to interpret our findings. Master narratives are guidelines that dictate the "expected" and "normal" way one is supposed to navigate life. We considered how graduate studen

The benefits of cognitive style versatility for collaborative work.

A growing body of the literature shows the influence of cognitive styles, which capture the ways individuals share, encode, and process information, and their implications for collaboration. We build on this literature to investigate the special contributions of individuals with cognitive style versatility, or facility in more than one cognitive style, for improving teams' collaborative performance. In two studies, including a total of 452 participants in 132 teams, we observe that the presence of cognitively versatile individuals has direct (Study 1) and indirect (Study 2) effects on team per

Negative impact of coronavirus on interventional cardiology fellows' training: Let's limit collateral damage of the pandemic.

Coronavirus disease pandemic has caused a dramatic reduction of elective and urgent interventional cardiology procedures, with a negative impact on training of interventional cardiology fellows. This study showed that 95% of interventional cardiology fellows during the first wave of the COVID‐19 pandemic believe that their training would be moderately or severely impacted by the health crisis. Interventional cardiology programs need to reorganize in order to ensure safe pathways for both urgent and elective cases, primarily for patients' care but also to grant an adequate caseload for trainees

Lumbar Puncture: Creation and Resident Acceptance of a Low-Cost, Durable, Reusable Fluoroscopic Phantom with a Fluid-Filled Spinal Canal for Training at an Academic Program.

Simulation-based medical training provides learners a method to develop technical skills without exposing patients to harm. Although fluoroscopic phantoms are already adopted in some areas of radiology, this has historically not been for lumbar puncture. Commercially available phantoms are expensive. We report a cost-effective, accessible solution by creation of an inexpensive phantom for resident training to perform fluoroscopically guided lumbar puncture, as well as instructions on how to make a phantom for residency education. An anthropomorphic ballistics-gel phantom that contains a plasti

Evaluation of a pediatric fluoroscopy training module to improve performance of upper gastrointestinal procedures in neonates with bilious emesis.

BACKGROUND: Life-threatening midgut volvulus usually occurs in infants with malrotation and requires rapid diagnosis and surgical treatment to prevent bowel necrosis and death. However, because of the low frequency of upper gastrointestinal studies performed in infants younger than 1 month, many diagnostic radiology residents finish their residency training having limited or no opportunity to perform or observe an upper gastrointestinal (GI) series for evaluation of bilious emesis in a neonate. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether adding simulated upper GI series on neonates with bilious emesis to
