Upper Extremity Injuries in Soccer.

Upper limb injuries in soccer represent only a marginal portion of injuries, however this is mainly true for outfield players. Goalkeepers are reported to have up to 5 times more upper extremity injuries, many of them requiring substantial time-loss for treatment and rehabilitation. The most common upper extremity injury locations are the shoulder/clavicle followed by the hand/finger/thumb, elbow, wrist, forearm, and upper arm. The mechanism of injury, presentation, physical examination, and imaging features all play a significant role in reaching the correct diagnosis. Taking to consideration

Posterolateral elbow dislocation with ipsilateral radial and ulnar diaphyseal fractures: a case report.

Elbow dislocation associated with both ipsilateral radial and ulnar shaft fractures is a rare pattern of injury, although it is common for elbow dislocation and forearm fractures to occur separately. We report a case of an 80-year-old woman who had a posterolateral elbow dislocation and ipsilateral radial and ulnar shaft fractures and underwent closed reduction and plate fixation. She had an excellent outcome after 22 months of follow-up.

Type III Monteggia fracture with posterior interosseous nerve injury in a child: A case report.

RATIONALE: Elbow injury in children by improper treatment or a delay of more than 3 weeks could lead to old unreduced Monteggia fracture, which are difficult to manage. Conservative or normal surgical methods usually fail. PATIENT CONCERNS: Herein, we present a 6-year-old boy with sustaining injury approximately 1 month to his left elbow. Activity in his elbow was restricted, and his ability to extend his wrist and fingers was impaired. DIAGNOSES: Type III Monteggia elbow fracture-dislocation consisting of radial head dislocation and malunion of the ulna associated with posterior interosseou

Intercostal nerve transfer to neurotize the musculocutaneous nerve after traumatic brachial plexus avulsion: a comparison of two, three, and four nerve transfers.

The purpose of this study was to compare the outcomes of different numbers of intercostal nerve (ICN) transfers for elbow flexion and to determine whether age, body mass index (BMI), type of injury, and preoperative delay influence the outcomes. From 2004 to 2010, 32 (30 included) consecutive patients underwent ICN transfer to the musculocutaneous nerve following brachial plexus injury. Elbow flexion strength was evaluated according to the British Medical Research Council (BMRC) grading system. Of nine patients who received two ICN transfers, six (66.7%) recovered with useful elbow flexion com

Radiographic findings in the shoulder and elbow of Major League Baseball pitchers.

BACKGROUND: Changes in the dominant shoulder and elbow of professional pitchers have been noted on radiographs, magnetic resonance imaging scans, and ultrasound studies. The relationship of these findings to future injury and to time lost from play has not been identified. HYPOTHESIS: Degenerative changes of the shoulder and elbow are common findings on the radiographs of asymptomatic Major League Baseball pitchers. The changes are cumulative with increased pitching. These findings are not predictive of time on the disabled list. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study (prognosis); Level of evidence, 4.

Elbow heterotopic ossification after distal biceps tendon repair presenting as median nerve neuropathy: A case report.

Ruptures of the distal attachment of the biceps brachii are rare injuries that typically occur in the dominant arm of men between the third and fourth decade of life. Surgical repair is indicated in active patients. Complications of surgical repair include neurovascular injury, heterotopic ossification, wound infection, elbow stiffness and re-rupture. Heterotopic ossification of the elbow is a rare complication of distal biceps tendon repair operations. It may be entirely asymptomatic or present with symptoms and signs such as swelling, erythema, pain, palpable mass, vascular and nerve compres

Radial Head Arthroplasty among Patients with Radial Head Fracture in a Tertiary Care Centre: A Descriptive Cross-sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION: Proximal radial fractures are a common type of fracture around the elbow joint. Among these comminuted radial head fractures are commonly associated with secondary injuries and instability of the elbow joint. Management of the radial head in such cases is very important in restoring the stability of the elbow joint and starting early mobilization. The aim of this study was to find out the prevalence of radial head arthroplasty among patients with radial head fracture in a tertiary care centre. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted from 25 January 2019 to 25

Changes in medial elbow elasticity and joint space gapping during maximal gripping: reliability and validity in evaluation of the medial elbow joint using ultrasound elastography.

BACKGROUND: Medial elbow injuries are common in baseball pitchers. This study investigated the reliability of medial elbow elastography measurement and the characteristics of the medial elbow stabilizers. METHODS: Medial elbow joint space gapping and the strain ratios of the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) and the forearm flexor-pronator muscle (FPM) were measured at rest and during gripping in 29 healthy college students. The intraclass correlation coefficients of elastography were calculated. The data were compared between tissues and between rest and gripping. RESULTS: The intraclass corr…

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fighters present greatest rapid and maximal strength imbalances at extreme elbow angles.

BACKGROUND: The performance of Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) fighters is dependent on rapid and maximal elbow strength actions. Appropriate strength balance between elbow flexors (F) and extensors (E) across the full joint range of motion may be required to decrease risk of injuries. AIM: To compare rapid and maximal elbow F/E strength balance through full range of motion in BJJ fighters. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-three male BJJ fighters (27.9 ± 4.6 years, 82.9 ± 10.9 kg, 174.5 ± 6.8 cm, and 15.3 ± 6.8% body fat) with 8.2 ± 6.5 years of practice volunteered to participate. Effect of various forearm axially rotated postures on elbow load and elbow flexion angle in one-armed arrest of a forward fall.

BACKGROUND: Falling onto the outstretched hand is a major cause of upper extremity injury. The overall objectives of this study were to develop an experimental model for elbow load during a simulated fall onto one-armed arrest using three different forearm axially rotated postures as alternative fall arrest strategies. Additionally, the relationship between the elbow flexion angle and different axially rotated postures were also investigated. METHODS: Fifteen healthy young male Taiwanese graduate students with an average age of 23 years were studied. Subjects performed a one-armed arrest of a

Bilateral trans-radial trans-scaphoid perilunate fracture-dislocation with bilateral dorsal elbow dislocation: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Bilateral trans-radial trans-scaphoid perilunate fracture-dislocation is one of the less common injuries of the wrist, occurring as a consequence of high-energy trauma. Its coincidence with bilateral elbow dislocation is extremely rare. CASE PRESENTATION: The authors present a case of a 24-year old male of Czech origin who attained this unique injury by falling from a height of 4 m onto both upper extremities. Bilateral open reduction of the wrists using both palmar and dorsal approaches and closed reduction of both elbow joints was performed. The arms were immobilized in casts fo

Common sports injuries in young tennis players.

Tennis is a popular racquet sport played by boys, girls, men and women. Tennis players frequently begin playing in childhood and may continue playing into late adulthood. Preadolescent and adolescent players have open growth plates and a reduced muscle power, lower level of coordination and smaller stature compared with adult players. The physical characteristics of the young tennis player mean that unique demands are placed on the developing athlete which can, in turn, be associated with different types and patterns of injury. The most common types of injury in tennis players of all ages are

Intra-articular fractures of the distal humerus-a review of the current practice.

Intra-articular fractures of the distal humerus are complex injuries that can considerably limit elbow function if not treated appropriately. Surgical management is indicated for most intra-articular distal humerus fractures with the goal of restoring elbow range of motion and function. Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) with plates and screws has been the preferred surgical option. Double plating is recommended for bicolumnar fractures and plates can be applied either parallel or orthogonal to each other. Surgical approach for ORIF of the distal humerus can be performed through an ol

Transfer of the musculocutaneous nerve branch to the brachialis muscle to the triceps for elbow extension: anatomical study and report of five cases.

UNLABELLED: We report the study of the anatomical feasibility of transferring the nerve to the brachialis muscle to the upper medial head motor branch that innervate the triceps, and outcomes of such transfers in restoring elbow extension in five patients with posterior cord lesion of the brachial plexus. The length of the branches to the brachialis muscle measured 7.6 cm and the triceps upper medial head motor branch was 5 cm in 10 adult cadavers. Five male patients were treated with this transfer 5 months after the injury (range 4 to 6 months) after posterior cord injury of the brachial plex

Residual articular incongruity is not a predictor of poor functional outcomes in operatively treated intra-articular elbow fractures.

BACKGROUND: Intra-articular and comminuted elbow fractures are complex injuries that present a tremendous surgical challenge. The goal of surgical fracture reduction is an anatomical restoration of the articular surface to restore physiological biomechanics of the elbow joint and to regain an unrestricted elbow function. However, these fractures are often accompanied by residual articular step-off, gap displacement, and intra-articular loose bodies. To date, the potential correlation between the quality of fracture reduction and the postoperative functional outcomes has not been investigated f
