Spatial analysis and privation index to identify urban areas with a high risk of lymphatic filariasis.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate composite living conditions as indicators of urban areas with a higher risk of filariasis transmission. METHODS: This was an ecological study in the municipality of Jaboatão dos Guararapes, in Brazil. The analysis units were census tracts. The study was divided into three phases. First, data gathered during an epidemiological investigation were analysed. Secondly, living condition indicators were drawn up and the relationship between these indicators and microfilaremia prevalence rates was analysed. Thirdly, positive cases were georeferenced with a view to identifying s

Clinical, parasitological and social studies on Wuchereria bancrofti in Egypt.

This study was conducted on patients attending Al-Hussein University Hospital and Mansura University Hospitals. Sheets were filled out on each patient (age, residence, occupation, family similar condition, travelling, disease duration, symptoms suggesting acute dermatolymphangitis attacks, frequency and duration. They were 25 lymphoedema patients and 8 controls (17 males & 16 females) and subjected to clinical and parasitological examinations. According to residence, five patients were from Giza Govemorate (18.18%), four from Dakahlia G. (12.12%), four from Gharbia G. (12.12%), five from Menou

Transmission models and management of lymphatic filariasis elimination.

The planning and evaluation of parasitic control programmes are complicated by the many interacting population dynamic and programmatic factors that determine infection trends under different control options. A key need is quantification about the status of the parasite system state at any one given timepoint and the dynamic change brought upon that state as an intervention program proceeds. Here, we focus on the control and elimination of the vector-borne disease, lymphatic filariasis, to show how mathematical models of parasite transmission can provide a quantitative framework for aiding the

[Secondary limb lymphedema].

Lymphedema is related to congenital lymphatic abnormality (primary forms) or acquired (secondary forms) after lesions of lymphatic system. Upper to limb secondary lymphedema after breast cancer treatment is the most frequent in France. The first worldwide cause is lymphatic filariosis. Secondary lymphedema is related to adverse effects after cancer treatment including surgery with lymph nodes excision associated with radiotherapy: breast, melanoma for upper limb, cervical, uterine, prostate, bladder cancer, melanoma for lower limb. At lymphedema onset, deep venous thrombosis and recurrent canc

Elimination of lymphatic filariasis in Southeast Asia.

Approximately 15 million people with lymphatic filariasis (LF) live in Southeast Asia. Wuchereria bancrofti (transmitted by the Mansonia and Anopheles vectors), Brugia malayi and Brugia timori (both transmitted by Culex quinquefasciatus) are the filarial species in this region. The endemic countries are: Cambodia, Lao People's Democratic Republic, the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand and Timor-Leste, which have all agreed to eliminate transmission of the disease by 2020. The public health interventions with respect to LF are based on the 1997 World Health Assembly resolution (WHA 50.29) which

Ten years of managing the clinical manifestations and disabilities of lymphatic filariasis.

The aim of the Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis is to eradicate one of the world's leading causes of permanent and long-term disability, at least as a public-health problem. The achievement of this goal is based on the interruption of the transmission of the causative parasites (so preventing new cases) and, as a 'second pillar', the prevention of disability in those who are infected. The disability is associated with the main clinical manifestations of human infection with Wuchereria or Brugia spp. (i.e. hydrocele, lymphoedema and/or 'acute attacks'). The World Health Organi

Lymphatic filariasis.

(1) Lymphatic filariasis is a set of parasitic diseases that are endemic in tropical and subtropical regions and can be disabling in the long term. (2) The standard antiparasitic drug for adults is oral diethylcarbamazine. Ivermectin is an alternative, especially for patients with intercurrent onchocercosis or loasis.

A role for Mansonia uniformis mosquitoes in the transmission of lymphatic filariasis in Uganda?

The possible role of Mansonia uniformis mosquitoes in the transmission of lymphatic filariasis was assessed in an endemic area of Uganda, by examining their diurnal biting cycle, host preference and ability to support the development of experimental and natural Wuchereria bancrofti infections. Anopheles gambiae s.l. served as controls. Human landing catches revealed that outdoor biting peaked early in the evening (19:00-20:00h), while indoor biting peaked around midnight (23:00-24:00h). By far the majority of indoor collected M. uniformis had derived their blood meals from humans. Both biting

Larvicidal, ovicidal and repellent activities of the leaf extract of two cucurbitacious plants against filarial vector Culex quinquefasciatus (Say) (Diptera : Culicidae).

The leaf extract of two cucurbitacious plants Citrullus colocynthis and Cucurbita maxima with different solvents viz., benzene, ethylacetate, petroleum ether and methanol were tested for larvicidal, ovicidal and repellent activities against the mosquito Culex quinquefasciatus. Larval mortality was observed and recorded after 24 h exposure period. The LC50 values of C. colocynthis were 61.72, 47.58, 66.92 and 118.74 ppm respectively. C. maxima shows the LC50 values of 123.02, 75.91, 117.73 and 171.64 ppm respectively. The mean percent hatchability of the egg rafts were observed after 48 h treat

Community-directed treatment of lymphatic filariasis in Kenya and its role in the national programmes for elimination of lymphatic filariasis.

We conducted a prospective, cross-sectional study to examine and compare treatment coverage of lymphatic filariasis by the health system (HST) and a health system implemented, community-directed treatment for the control of lymphatic filariasis (ComDT / HS) in 44 randomly selected villages in coastal Kenya. Demographic information on the villages and peripheral health facilities to guide design and implementation was obtained from a situation analysis phase of this study. A series of interactive training sessions on basic biology of lymphatic filariasis, concept and philosophy of ComDT / HS we

Assessment of families for excess risk of lymphedema of the leg in a lymphatic filariasis-endemic area.

The influence of host genes on the distribution of lymphedema due to lymphatic filariasis is unknown. To assess this, pedigree and disease information were collected from lymphedema patients in a lymphatic filariasis-endemic area. These patients were female, with an average age of approximately 40 years, who were enrolled between June 1995 and July 1999 in a lymphedema treatment clinic, and from the rural Haitian community served by the clinic. Interviews were conducted between September 1998 and December 1999. Families with multiple lymphedema cases were of similar size, with an average of 15

Genetic variation in immune function and susceptibility to human filariasis.

The generation of a draft sequence of a the human genome has provided the opportunity to characterize human diversity, even as it pertains to differences in host response to parasitic infection with organisms that cause lymphatic filariasis, malaria and schistosomiasis. Worldwide, human infection with filarial pathogens represents a significant cause of morbidity throughout the tropics. In particular, epidemiologic evidence suggests that a genetic component contributes to susceptibility and possibly the outcomes of filarial infection. Different approaches can be applied in population-based stu

[Mediastinal lymphatic filariasis].

Wuchereria bancrofti gravid adult female worms were detected in a mediastinal lymph node in a 76-year old man. The patient also had lung carcinoma. A blood cell counts did not show any eosinophilia, and three consecutive night blood samples were also negative for microfilariae. Filariasis and neoplasm association was purely coincidental. Epidemiological and histopathological aspects of adult filariasis are described.
