Prevalence of Intestinal Parasitic Infections Among Diarrheic Patients from Ahvaz, Southwestern Iran.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal parasitic infections are among the most common infections in humans, particularly in resource-poor communities. Gastrointestinal parasites, specially protozoa, can lead to diarrhea, malabsorption, and anemia. The majority of parasitic diarrhea is caused by Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia duodenalis, and Cryptosporidium spp. The present study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of intestinal parasites among diarrheic patients referred to the Shahid Rajaee Polyclinic, Ahvaz, southwestern Iran. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the prevalence of intes…

Effects of Piper longum fruit, Piper sarmentosum root and Quercus infectoria nut gall on caecal amoebiasis in mice.

The anti-amoebic effects of crude methanol extracts of Piper longum fruit, Piper sarmentosum root and Quercus infectoria nut gall against Entamoeba histolytica infecting the caecum of mice were studied. Caecal amoebiasis in mice was induced by injection of Entamoeba histolytica trophozoites directly into the caecum. The mice were then treated orally with the extract, a standard drug (metronidazole), or vehicle p.o. for five consecutive days, beginning 24 h after the infection and were examined on the sixth day. At a dose of 1000 mg/kg per day, the extracts of Piper longum fruit, Piper sarmento…

Comparative Study of the Efficacy and Tolerability of Secnidazole Suspension (single dose) and Tinidazole Suspension (two days dosage) in the Treatment of Amebiasis in Children.

Amebiasis caused by Entamoeba histolytica may be considered the most aggressive parasitic disease affecting human intestine, causing acute amoebic colitis and extra-intestinal diseases of high morbidity and mortality. 5-nitroimidazoles are the drugs of choice. In this multicenter, open and random clinical trial, the efficacy and tolerability of secnidazole suspension in a single oral dose of 1ml/kg was compared with 0.5ml/kg doses of tinidazole suspension given for 2 consecutive days to 303 Entamoeba histolytica-positive children aged 2 to 13. Patients with extra-intestinal complications were …

Intestinal parasitism in the United States: update on a continuing problem.

To document patterns of intestinal parasitism in the United States, we analyzed results of 216,275 stool specimens examined by the state diagnostic laboratories in 1987; parasites were found in 20.0%. Percentages were highest for protozoans: Giardia lamblia (7.2%), Entamoeba coli and Endolimax nana (4.2% each), Blastocystis hominis (2.6%), and Entamoeba histolytica (0.9%). The most commonly identified helminths were nematodes: hookworm (1.5%), Trichuris trichiura (1.2%), and Ascaris lumbricoides (0.8%). Identifications of G. lamblia increased broadly from the 4.0% average found in 1979, with 4…

Inflammatory reaction in experimental hepatic amebiasis. An ultrastructural study.

One of the hallmarks of tissue necrosis produced by the human protozoan parasite Entamoeba histolytica, the causative agent of human amebiasis, appeared to be the lack of inflammatory reaction to the invading trophozoites. Recent evidence suggests, however, that inflammatory cells do appear during early stages of amebic destructive lesions and that they contribute to the establishment of foci of tissue necrosis in intestinal and liver lesions. The present analysis of the fine-structural changes that take place during early stages of amebic liver abscesses induced in hamsters after the intrapor…

Trichomoniasis and Other Sexually Transmitted Parasitic Diseases in Women.

Parasitic sexually transmitted infections are spread through sexual contact (vaginal, oral, and/or anal sex). The majority of parasitic STIs involve protozoan pathogens (ie, Trichomonas vaginalis, Entamoeba histolytica, and Giardia duodenalis ); however, ectoparasitic infections ( Pthirus pubis and Sarcoptes scabiei ) are also included in this group. The purpose of this review is to provide a comprehensive summary of the epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and treatment of parasitic sexually transmitted infections, with a particular focus on their impact on women.

[Ileocecal ameboma: a case diagnosed by pathology and molecular biology].

Colonic ameboma is a rare benign inflammatory tumor due to the infection by Entamoeba histolytica and poses frequently the problem of colon cancer. We report a case of a 52 year-old patient who presented a cecal amoeboma revealed by a painful mass in the right iliac fossa. Radiologic and endoscopic examinations depicted a parietal thickening of the right colon and the cecum. A presumptive diagnosis of colon cancer was firstly discussed. Confirmation of ameboma was made on pathological examination, PCR and serology.

Cutaneous amebiasis in a child and review of the literature.

Cutaneous amebiasis is a rare manifestation of infection with the parasite Entamoeba histolytica. We describe this infestation in a 9-year-old Mexican immigrant who presented with diarrhea and perianal ulcers. To our knowledge, this is only the tenth child with cutaneous amebiasis reported in the literature, and only the second from the United States. We review previous reports and emphasize the importance of a high index of clinical suspicion for early diagnosis and treatment to prevent potentially serious morbidity and even mortality.

Missing infections in AIDS.

In north America and Europe, the opportunistic infections from which patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) frequently suffer are Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia and Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare: in central Africa these infections are uncommon or non-existent. Serious infections with Entamoeba histolytica and Strongyloides stercoralis would be expected to occur in AIDS patients: they do not. Falciparum malaria might be expected to interact with HIV infection: it does not. The epidemiology and pathophysiology of these infections are discussed with respect to HIV co-infect…

The vitamin B1 status among young Egyptian males in relation to infection with parasites.

Erythrocytic transketolase activity and thiamin pyrophosphate effect (TPP%) were used to define the nutritional thiamin status of an age stratified sample of 66 young males with parasitic infection. The results revealed that 6% of the control group were biochemically deficient in vitamin B1 compared with a percentage incidence of 42% among the parasitized subjects. Intestinal infection with Entamoeba histolytica, Hymenolepsis nana or with more than one parasite had the most depleting effect on the tissue thiamin status.

Intestinal parasites in homosexual men.

A study on the prevalence of intestinal parasites in a group of homosexual men, attending a sexually-transmitted diseases clinic in Glasgow, was undertaken. Of 118 men examined over an eight-month period, four, one of whom had symptoms of dysentery, were found to be infected with Entamoeba histolytica. Cysts of Iodamoeba buetschlii were also found in the stool of one of these men. A further two patients had giardiasis, and 11 men had enterobiasis. The importance of an awareness of these conditions is discussed.

Amoebas: the omnipotent organism and silent assassin.

Amoebas are characterized by their unique ability to exist both as free-living organisms and, occasionally, as parasites within host tissues, earning them the designation 'amphizoic amoebae'. While amoebic infections are less prevalent, their health impact can be tremendous, leading to several diseases. In low-income countries, poor sanitation and socioeconomic conditions significantly increase the risk of amoebic infections, particularly E. histolytica, which affects up to 50 million people and causes over 100,000 deaths each year. Diagnostic methods, including microscopy, serological tests,

Difficulty Confirming the Diagnosis of Amoebic Enteritis.

Amoebic dysentery is designated a Category 5 disease under the Infectious Disease Control Law in Japan, with approximately 1,000 cases reported annually. About 10% of these are cases of invasive amoebic dysentery, 90% of which have an asymptomatic course and are often discovered incidentally, and there is concern that the number of undiagnosed cases is increasing since the reagent for that blood antibody test was discontinued in 2017. Invasive amoebic dysentery often causes ulcerative lesions that affect the cecum and rectum predominantly, but eradication of amoebic dysentery is possible with

Pathogenesis of acute experimental liver amebiasis.

Classical descriptions of the pathology of amebiasis portray the parasite as the cause of tissue damage and destruction, and in recent years a number of amebic molecules have been identified as virulence factors. In this review we describe a series of experiments that suggest a more complex host-parasite relation, at least during the early stages of acute experimental amebic liver abscess in hamsters. The problems of extrapolating experiments in vitro to explain observations in vivo are discussed. The role of amebic cysteine proteases is examined and evidence presented to suggest that they are
