Recovery of vestibular evoked myogenic potentials after a vertigo attack due to vestibular neuritis.

CONCLUSIONS: Inferior vestibular nerve functions could recover in patients with vestibular neuritis (VN). OBJECTIVES: Although the recovery of superior vestibular nerve functions has been reported, there is little information about the recovery of inferior vestibular nerve functions in patients with VN. This study was done to clarify if inferior vestibular nerve functions recover after an attack of VN. METHODS: Neuro-otological tests including vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) testing and caloric testing were sequentially performed in 13 patients with VN, who showed absence of VEMP

Statistical analysis of visual evoked potentials in optic neuritis and ischemic optic neuropathy subjects.

An effective and clinically relevant parameter for differentiating ischemic optic neuropathy (ION) and optic neuritis (ON) patients using the Visual Evoked Potentials (VEPs) has been identified. In this study, statistical analysis has been carried out on time domain parameters of the VEP waveforms recorded for ION (17 patients) and ON (35 patients) groups. The ratio of the amplitude of P100 component of affected eye to fellow eye showed no significant difference between the two groups. However, the mean P100 absolute latency component of ION patients was found to be significantly (p<0.001) sho…

Differences between primary somatosensory cortex- and vertex-derived somatosensory-evoked potentials in the rat.

The somatosensory-evoked potential (SEP) elicited by high-intensity stimulation potentially provides a reliable indicator of analgesic efficacy since it reflects the level of activation of the nociceptive system. In the present study, components in the 10-30-ms latency range of SEPs recorded over the primary somatosensory cortex (SI-SEPs) and vertex (Vx-SEP) in the rat were characterized and compared. SEPs were elicited by electrical tail-base stimulation, and SI-SEPs and Vx-SEPs were recorded simultaneously. Responses to increasing stimulus intensity and stimulus frequency while awake and res

Influence of dopamine on flash visual evoked potentials (FVEP) in prenatally mercury intoxicated rats.

The female adult white Wistar rats were given tap water (control) or 50 ppm of methylmercury chloride (MMC) ad libitum throughout their pregnancies. Newborn rats drank mother's milk during the first 21 days after delivery and then only tap water. The study was carried out on three-month old offsprings of white Wistar rats. The flash visual evoked potentials (FVEP) were recorded before and after injecting of 10 microl 0.9% saline, 50 or 100 nmols of dopamine (DA) into the lateral brain ventricle by method used before in our laboratory. The amplitude of the first deep negative (N(1)) peak signif…

Evaluation of methods for eliciting somatosensory-evoked potentials in the awake, freely moving rat.

To standardise the method of eliciting somatosensory-evoked potentials (SEPs), SEPs were generated by electrical stimulation of different stimulus sites and recorded bilaterally from the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) and from midline in awake, freely moving rats. Increasing stimulus intensity enhanced amplitudes of all SEPs. At supramaximal stimulation, SEPs following vibrissae and tail stimulation (V-SEP and Ta-SEP, respectively) but not following trunk stimulation (Tr-SEP), fulfilled our criterion of signal-to-noise ratio >or=4. The first V-SEP component coincided with a stimulus artefac…

Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials in response to skull taps for patients with vestibular neuritis.

In recent years it has been demonstrated that loud clicks generate short latency vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMP). It has also been demonstrated that skull tap stimulation evokes similar VEMP. In the present study, the differences between the click-induced and the skull-tap induced VEMP were studied in 18 patients at onset of vestibular neuritis. Gentle skull taps were delivered manually above each ear on the side of the skull and on the forehead midline. The muscular responses were recorded over both sternocleidomastoid muscles using skin electrodes. Abnormal skull tap VEMP were f

Two cases of quadriparesis following anterior cervical discectomy, with normal perioperative somatosensory evoked potentials.

Two cases illustrate an uncommon failure of perioperative somatosensory evoked potential (SEP) monitoring to detect iatrogenic lesions causi … atively. Both patients, however, experienced marked postoperative limb weakness or paralysis. Motor evoked potentials (MEP) recorded postoperatively to transcranial magnetic stimulation were absent. The clinical motor deficits resolved over the ensuing months. In spite of the normally low incidence of "false negatives," in these two cases SEP monitoring failed to d …

Assessing olfactory function in laryngectomees using the Sniffin'Sticks test battery and chemosensory evoked potentials.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Laryngectomees are often considered to be completely anosmic. The aim of this study was to determine whether anosmia in laryngectomees reflects diminished transport of odorants to the olfactory epithelium or olfactory epithelial damage. STUDY DESIGN: Twenty-five laryngectomees were examined psychophysically using the Sniffin'Sticks test battery. All patients rated the degree of their subjectively perceived deficit on a rating scale. Chemosensory evoked potentials were also recorded in 11 of 25 patients. RESULTS: Sixteen patients complained very little about their smell…

Neurological complications of anterior spinal surgery for kyphosis with normal somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs).

We report a case of neurological complications of anterior release for correction of kyphosis. After the operation, the patient had pyramidal weakness and decreased pain sensation below T5, whereas light touch, proprioception and vibration sensation were intact. Clinical and neurophysiological findings in this patient suggested a partial lesion of the spinal cord probably due to ischaemia in the territory of the anterior spinal artery. Intraoperative and postoperative tibial nerve SEPs remained normal, which stresses the need for recording from the motor pathways.

Calcinosis cutis following calcium chloride electrode paste application for auditory-brainstem evoked potentials recording.

Circumscribed calcification in the dermis (calcinosis cutis) has been reported following electroencephalographic and electromyographic studies at sites of electrode placement following application of an electrode paste containing calcium chloride. Prolonged exposure and skin microabrasions seem to increase the risk of this rare complication of electrode placement, which has not been previously reported following auditory brainstem evoked potential recordings. We report the appearance of localized dermal calcifications at the sites of electrode placement (forehead and retroauricular areas) foll

Gating of somatosensory evoked potentials during voluntary movement of the lower limb in man.

Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) evoked by stimulation of the tibial nerve (TN) in the popliteal fossa, the sural nerve (Sur) at the lateral malleole, and an Achilles tendon (Achilles) tap were recorded before and during voluntary plantarflexion, dorsiflexion, and cocontraction of the ipsi- and contralateral foot in normal subjects. Suppression (gating) of the TN-SEP began around 60 ms before the onset of electromyographic activity (EMG), and became maximal 50-100 ms after the onset of EMG. Similar gating was observed for the SEP evoked by activation of muscle afferents (Achilles) and cu…

Effects of 4-aminopyridine on motor evoked potentials in patients with spinal cord injury.

The potassium (K+) channel-blocking agent 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) is currently being investigated for its potential therapeutic value in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI). The present study was designed to test the hypothesis that 4-AP ameliorates central motor conduction deficits in individuals with SCI. Oral 4-AP (10 mg) was administered to 19 (n = 19) SCI subjects with stable neurological deficits. Their response to the drug was monitored using motor evoked potentials (MEPs) following transcranial magnetic stimulation of motor cortex and various measures of segmental or peripheral refle…
