Unraveling the role of proteins in dementia: insights from two UK cohorts with causal evidence.

Population-based proteomics offers a groundbreaking avenue to predict future disease risks, enhance our understanding of disease mechanisms, and discover novel therapeutic targets and biomarkers. The role of plasma proteins in dementia, however, requires further exploration. This study investigated 276 protein-dementia associations in 229 incident all-cause dementia, 89 Alzheimer's disease, and 41 vascular dementia among 3249 participants (55% women, 97.2% white ethnicity) from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA) over a median 9.8-year follow-up. We used Cox proportional hazard reg

The Association of Neonatal Gut Microbiota Community State Types with Birth Weight.

BACKGROUND: while most gut microbiota research has focused on term infants, the health outcomes of preterm infants are equally important. Very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) or extremely-low-birth-weight (ELBW) preterm infants have a unique gut microbiota structure, and probiotics have been reported to somewhat accelerate the maturation of the gut microbiota and reduce intestinal inflammation in very-low preterm infants, thereby improving their long-term outcomes. The aim of this study was to investigate the structure of gut microbiota in ELBW neonates to facilitate the early identification of differ

Intelligent Distributed Optical Fiber Pressure Sensing for Dental Bite-Force Analysis.

Measuring bite force is essential for assessing the masticatory system and diagnosing oral disease. Existing measurement devices have low spatial resolution and susceptibility to electromagnetic interference. This paper presents a machine learning (ML)-assisted distributed fiber optic sensing system based on Scattering Level Multiplexing (SLMux) for high-resolution bite force analysis. Enhanced backscattered data were acquired through optical backscattered reflectometry from 88 sensing points along the dental arch. Measured data were reconstructed into a two-dimensional map of bite force and a

Modeling residue formation from crude oil oxidation using tree-based machine learning approaches.

In-situ combustion (ISC) offers a compelling solution for enhancing oil recovery, particularly for heavy crude oils. This process involves the oxidation and pyrolysis of hydrocarbons, generating heat and depositing fuel in the combustion front. In this work, the thermo-oxidative profiles and residue formation of crude oils during thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were modeled using 3075 experimental data points from 18 crude oils with API gravities ranging from 5 to 42. Four advanced tree-based machine learning algorithms comprising gradient boosting with categorical features support (CatBoost)

Prediction of drug-induced liver injury and cardiotoxicity using chemical structure and in vitro assay data.

Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) and cardiotoxicity (DICT) are major adverse effects triggered by many clinically important drugs. To provide an alternative to in vivo toxicity testing, the U.S. Tox21 consortium has screened a collection of ∼10K compounds, including drugs in clinical use, against >70 cell-based assays in a quantitative high-throughput screening (qHTS) format. In this study, we compiled reference compound lists for DILI and DICT and compared the potential of Tox21 assay data with chemical structure information in building prediction models for human in vivo hepatotoxicity and c

Stockwell transform and semi-supervised feature selection from deep features for classification of BCI signals.

Over the past few years, the processing of motor imagery (MI) electroencephalography (EEG) signals has been attracted for developing brain-computer interface (BCI) applications, since feature extraction and classification of these signals are extremely difficult due to the inherent complexity and tendency to artifact properties of them. The BCI systems can provide a direct interaction pathway/channel between the brain and a peripheral device, hence the MI EEG-based BCI systems seem crucial to control external devices for patients suffering from motor disabilities. The current study presents a

Machine learning approaches to predict the apparent rate constants for aqueous organic compounds by ferrate.

The apparent second-order rate constant with hexavalent ferrate (Fe(VI)) (kFe(VI)) is a key indicator to evaluate the removal efficiency of a molecule by Fe(VI) oxidation. kFe(VI) is often determined by experiment, but such measurements can hardly catch up with the rapid growth of organic compounds (OCs). To address this issue, in this study, a total of 437 experimental second-order kFe(VI) rate constants at a range of conditions (pH and temperature) were used to train four machine learning (ML) algorithms (lasso regression (LR), ridge regression (RR), extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), and
