BACKGROUND: To assess the long-term visual outcomes in patients with posteriorly located choroidal melanoma treated with ruthenium plaque brachytherapy between January 2013 and December 2015.
METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted on consecutive patients treated with ruthenium plaque brachytherapy for post-equatorial choroidal melanoma with available Snellen visual acuity before and after treatment, and the development and treatment of radiation complications.

We report a case of adenocarcinoma of the pigmented ciliary epithelium arising in a phthisical eye. A 92-year-old man who initially presented with severe ocular pain had calcification extending from the posterior pole to ciliary body on B-scan ultrasonography to a degree not previously reported. We highlight the importance of screening for intraocular neoplasms in adults with a long-standing phthisical eye.

OBJECTIVE: To review golf-related ocular injuries, which account for 1.5% to 5.6% of all sports injuries.
METHODS: During 8 years (1986 to 1994), a retrospective review of sports-related trauma was performed at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. Eight blunt ocular injuries (four ruptured globes and four globes without rupture) caused by golf-related activities were identified. The four ruptured globes caused by golf-related trauma accounted for 1.2% of all penetrating injuries and/or ruptured globes and 11.7% of sports-related injuries.

A 60-year-old woman had a ciliary body tumor that resembled an amelanotic malignant melanoma by clinical examination. The magnetic resonance imaging scan correlated with the clinical diagnosis. Because of apparent rapid growth, her eye was enucleated. However, histopathologic examination revealed a highly vascularized, spindle-cell tumor harboring immunoreactive actin and vimentin. Electron microscopy further supported the diagnosis of hemangiopericytoma with smooth-muscle differentiation. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a hemangiopericytoma of the ciliary body.

A 5-year-old child with Crouzon's disease presented with luxation of the eyeballs and advanced endophthalmitis as a result of which both the eyes had to be enucleated. This case led us to study the family pedigree. The factors influencing the pattern of clinical presentation, and hence the ultimate treatment of orbital disease, are discussed. The case is presented to emphasise the different concept of ophthalmology in Africa so far as the presentation and management of orbital disease are concerned. Appropriate and timely attention could have prevented the complications in our patient.

Vitreous cylinders, a rarely discussed ophthalmologic entity, were studied in two clinical cases and in five enucleated eyes. The cylinders were found in four cases of ocular toxoplasmosis, one case of vitreous hemorrhage complicating a malignant melanoma, and one case of pars planitis and one of uveitis, both of unknown causes. Results of scanning electron microscopy in one specimen suggested that cylinders are formed by condensation of vitreous collagen fibers. We emphasize the nonspecific nature of this interesting vitreous finding.

In a 27-year-old patient a microphthalmic eye with congenital cataract was enucleated because of persistent recurrent iridocyclitis with a secondary glaucoma. Histopathological examination has shown a lens shrunken up to the capsule and a retrolental typical fatty tissue (pseudophakia lipomatosa). Secondary angle closure glaucoma and chronic uveitis seem to be due to an untreated hypermature cataract. These findings and the clinical course are suggesting that the opaque lens and the persistent hyperplastic vitreous body should have been operated in order to avoid complications.

PURPOSE: To investigate whether proton therapy (PT) performs safely in superotemporal melanomas, in terms of risk of dry-eye syndrome (DES).
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Tumor location, DES grade, and dose to ocular structures were analyzed in patients undergoing PT (2005-2015) with 52 Gy (prescribed dose, not accounting for biologic effectiveness correction of 1.1).
