Integrated multi-omics analysis reveals molecular regulation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-ovary axis underlying egg production in indigenous chickens.

This study was conducted to systematically elucidate the molecular regulatory mechanisms underlying egg production traits in indigenous chickens. Using a self-bred White-feathered Green-shelled (WG) chicken line as the research subject, high-yield and low-yield individuals were selected based on egg numbers at 43 weeks (EN43). Hypothalamus, pituitary, and ovarian tissues were collected from these individuals for targeted metabolomics profiling and transcriptome sequencing. The results showed a significant difference in EN43 between the two groups (P < 0.05). Targeted metabolomics of ovarian ti

Ginger oil boosts sini decoction's protective effects on lung injury caused by acute cold stress through reshaping lung microbiota structure in broilers.

Acute cold stress (ACS) is a widespread concern in poultry farming. It not only severely reduces the growth performance of broilers but also affects the function of respiratory system, especially the lungs. Sini Decoction (SND) is a classic herbal formula for warming yang and dispelling cold. The oil-enriched Sini Decoction (SNDO) which is characterized by high concentration of 6-gingerol is an experimental formulation modified from SND via technological modification. A total of 96 one-day-old, white-feathered broilers were randomly assigned to four groups: control (CON) group, ACS group, SND

Time- and season-dependent changes in the steroidogenic markers in female tree sparrow (Passer montanus).

Seasonal breeders display elevated sex steroid hormone production during reproductive seasons, resulting in significant physiological and structural alterations. One such seasonal breeder adapted to the changing environment is a Tree sparrow (Passer montanus). The study aims to investigate 24-h rhythmicity and annual variations in the expression of steroidogenic gene markers of adult female tree sparrows. Two experiments were conducted; in experiment one, birds (n = 5 birds/time points) were sampled at six time points, i.e., ZT1, ZT5, ZT9, ZT13, ZT17, and ZT21 (ZT = Zeitgeber time, ZT0 = sunri

Immune stress impairs broiler performance by affecting hypothalamic methylation modification and intestinal 5-HT synthesis.

In this experiment, a chronic immune stress model was established in broiler chickens by injecting lipopolysaccharide (LPS). The objective was to investigate the impact of immune stress on performance and intestinal mucosal barrier function in broiler chickens and identify key molecular and neuroendocrine pathways contributing to these effects. We randomly divided 160 one-day-old male white-feathered broilers into two groups: the control group (CON) and the LPS immune stress group (LPS), with 8 replicates of 10 chickens each. The LPS group received 0.5 mg/kg body weight LPS injections at 14 da

Genetic analysis of keel bone fractures in laying hens housed in a quasi-commercial aviary.

Keel bone fractures (KBF) in laying hens are a major welfare problem in the egg production industry. While housing design and nutrition are known contributing factors, the role of genetics in KBF susceptibility is not well understood. The objective of this study was to estimate the heritability of KBF susceptibility and identify associated genomic regions and candidate genes in commercial laying hens. We used KBF assessment scores derived from radiographs of 1,060 white-feathered two-way crossbred hens housed in a quasi-commercial aviary system. A log-transformation was applied to the KBF scor

Wild birds as potential bioindicators of environmental antimicrobial resistance: A preliminary investigation.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an issue of global concern that includes human, animal, and environmental health. To tackle this phenomenon, a One Health approach is required through the involvement of all these interconnected elements. The environment poses challenges for investigation, but wildlife animals, not directly exposed to antibiotic treatments and interacting with their habitats, can serve as indicators of AMR contamination. Specifically, wild birds could play a significant role in dissemination of AMR, as they can acquire AMR bacteria from wildlife reservoirs and disperse them th

Mining Candidate Genes and Identifying Risk Factors for Leg Disease in Broilers: A Mendelian Randomization Study.

Clinical investigations have highlighted disruptions in bone metabolic processes and abnormal fluctuations in serum indicator levels during the onset of leg disease (LD) in broilers. However, the presence of a genetic causal relationship for this association remains undetermined. Therefore, the aim of this study is to discern the risk factors underlying LD development using 1235 sequenced white-feathered broilers. We employed Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to assess the associations of bone strength (BS), bone mineral density (BMD), tibial bone weight (TBW), tibial bone length (TBL), ti

Maternal stevioside supplementation improves intestinal immune function of chicken offspring potentially via modulating gut microbiota and down-regulating the promoter methylation level of suppressor of cytokine signaling 1 (SOCS1).

The intestinal immune function of chickens is limited during the early growing stage. Maternal nutritional intervention has been suggested to affect the innate immunity of offspring. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of maternal stevioside supplementation on the intestinal immune function of chicken offspring. A total of 120 Jinmao yellow-feathered breeder hens were fed a basal diet or a diet supplemented with 250 mg/kg stevioside for 5 weeks. During the last week, 200 breeding eggs from each group were collected for incubation. After hatching, 80 male offspring (40 chickens f

Dual infection and superinfection inhibition of epithelial skin cells by two alphaherpesviruses co-occur in the natural host.

Hosts can be infected with multiple herpesviruses, known as superinfection; however, superinfection of cells is rare due to the phenomenon known as superinfection inhibition. It is believed that dual infection of cells occurs in nature, based on studies examining genetic exchange between homologous alphaherpesviruses in the host, but to date, this has not been directly shown in a natural model. In this report, gallid herpesvirus 2 (GaHV-2), better known as Marek's disease virus (MDV), was used in its natural host, the chicken, to determine whether two homologous alphaherpesviruses can infect t

Hen welfare in different housing systems.

Egg production systems have become subject to heightened levels of scrutiny. Multiple factors such as disease, skeletal and foot health, pest and parasite load, behavior, stress, affective states, nutrition, and genetics influence the level of welfare hens experience. Although the need to evaluate the influence of these factors on welfare is recognized, research is still in the early stages. We compared conventional cages, furnished cages, noncage systems, and outdoor systems. Specific attributes of each system are shown to affect welfare, and systems that have similar attributes are affected

Carotid endarterectomy with reconstruction techniques tailored to operative findings.

PURPOSE: Reconstruction techniques tailored to operative findings were applied to 466 consecutive carotid endarterectomies (CEA) performed on 408 patients over 5 years. The choice of reconstructive technique was based on the extent of the arteriotomy incision required to obtain a complete internal CEA endpoint, the ability to obtain a complete endpoint, and the quality or redundancy of the endarterectomized internal carotid artery (ICA) segment. The hypothesis was that a complete internal CEA endpoint and a tapered, smooth, nonkinked reconstruction minimize complications. METHODS: Complete di

Hissing of geese: caller identity encoded in a non-vocal acoustic signal.

Non-vocal, or unvoiced, signals surprisingly have received very little attention until recently especially when compared to other acoustic signals. Some sounds made by terrestrial vertebrates are produced not only by the larynx but also by the syrinx. Furthermore, some birds are known to produce several types of non-syrinx sounds. Besides mechanical sounds produced by feathers, bills and/or wings, sounds can be also produced by constriction, anywhere along the pathway from the lungs to the lips or nostrils (in mammals), or to the bill (in birds), resulting in turbulent, aerodynamic sounds. The…
