Association of Frontline Worker-Provided Services with Change in Block-Level Complementary Feeding Indicators: An Ecological Analysis from Bihar, India.

BACKGROUND: Insufficiencies in complementary feeding put infants and young children at increased risk of undernutrition. Till now, most Indian studies have looked at the individual level determinants of complementary feeding practices. We aimed to evaluate the association of frontline worker (FLW) provided nutritional counselling services, with change in community level indicators of complementary feeding practices among 9-11 month old children over time. METHODS: The study data was obtained from five rounds of 'Lot Quality Assurance Sampling' survey in eight districts of Bihar, an impoverish

Systematic review of five feeding routes after pancreatoduodenectomy.

BACKGROUND: Current European guidelines recommend routine enteral feeding after pancreato-duodenectomy (PD), whereas American guidelines do not. The aim of this study was to determine the optimal feeding route after PD. METHODS: A systematic search was performed in PubMed, Embase and the Cochrane Library. Included were studies on feeding routes after PD that reported length of hospital stay (primary outcome). RESULTS: Of 442 articles screened, 15 studies with 3474 patients were included. Data on five feeding routes were extracted: oral diet (2210 patients), enteral nutrition via either a nas

In vivo effects of traditional Ayurvedic formulations in Drosophila melanogaster model relate with therapeutic applications.

BACKGROUND: Ayurveda represents the traditional medicine system of India. Since mechanistic details of therapy in terms of current biology are not available in Ayurvedic literature, modern scientific studies are necessary to understand its major concepts and procedures. It is necessary to examine effects of the whole Ayurvedic formulations rather than their "active" components as is done in most current studies. METHODS: We tested two different categories of formulations, a Rasayana (Amalaki Rasayana or AR, an herbal derivative) and a Bhasma (Rasa-Sindoor or RS, an organo-metallic derivative

Weight cycling enhances adipose tissue inflammatory responses in male mice.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is associated with low-grade chronic inflammation attributed to dysregulated production, release of cytokines and adipokines and to dysregulated glucose-insulin homeostasis and dyslipidemia. Nutritional interventions such as dieting are often accompanied by repeated bouts of weight loss and regain, a phenomenon known as weight cycling (WC). METHODS: In this work we studied the effects of WC on the feed efficiency, blood lipids, carbohydrate metabolism, adiposity and inflammatory markers in C57BL/6 male mice that WC two or three consecutive times by alternation of a high-fa

Early growth response-1 transcription factor is essential for ethanol-induced fatty liver injury in mice.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Early growth response-1 (Egr-1), an immediate early gene/zinc-finger transcription factor, is required for maximal stimulation of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) transcription in response to lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Because chronic ethanol exposure sensitizes macrophages to LPS-stimulated TNF-alpha expression, we have investigated the role of Egr-1 in mediating increased LPS-stimulated TNF-alpha expression after chronic ethanol feeding. Furthermore, because TNF-alpha contributes to alcoholic liver injury, we tested the hypothesis that Egr-1 is required for the devel

Clinical significance of pedicle aneurysms on feeding vessels, especially those located in infratentorial arteriovenous malformations.

OBJECT: The diminishing threshold for the application of neuroimaging leads to an increasingly frequent diagnosis of previously asymptomatic arteriovenous malformations (AVMs). In such a context, it is warranted to define the criteria that make a lesion potentially hazardous so that neurosurgeons and patients reach a decision concerning how to manage the AVM. In addition to the proposed grading system for AVMs, which assesses the risk of an actual treatment procedure, several studies have been concerned with the evaluation of angioarchitectural features. The goal of the present study is to dem

Prevalence of intestinal helminth parasites of pigeons (Columba livia domestica Gmelin 1789) in Kano State, North-Western Nigeria.

In Nigeria, helminths have over the last decades been established as important parasite of poultry including pigeons. However, the prevalence of these parasites of pigeons in Kano State is yet to be established. The prevalence of helminth parasites of domestic pigeon (Columba livia domestica) in Kano State, Nigeria was investigated in this study. The differences in the prevalence of infection between the pigeons examined on the basis of sex of the pigeon and season of the year were analyzed statistically using the students' "t" -test. The intestinal contents of 144 pigeons were examined for ga

Early childhood development intervention and timely initiation of complementary feeding among HIV exposed infants in Tanzania: a quasi-experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Timely initiation of complementary feeding for HIV-exposed infants (HEI) is essential in improving the child's health and for ensuring the child's nutritional requirements are met. ECD interventions have been integrated to HIV programs as one of the approaches to improve complementary feeding practices among HEI. However, there is limited evidence regarding the contribution of Early Childhood Development (ECD) intervention on timely initiation of complementary feeding among HEI in Tanzania. METHODS: The study employed a post-test-only non-equivalent comparison-group quasi-experime

Regulatory problems and associated factors among infants in Arba Minch health and demographic surveillance system sites, southern Ethiopia.

INTRODUCTION: Infant regulatory problems are a common source of concern for parents, and they increase the risk of impaired infant-caregiver bonding. Despite their impact, they are often overlooked in Ethiopia. Hence, this study aimed to determine the prevalence and associated factors of infant regulatory problems in Arba Minch Health and Demographic Surveillance System sites in southern Ethiopia. METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 451 mother-infant pairs from February 15 to March 15, 2022. Regulatory problems were assessed using diagnostic interviews for reg

Host genetics and gut microbiota synergistically regulate feed utilization in egg-type chickens.

BACKGROUND: Feed efficiency is a crucial economic trait in poultry industry. Both host genetics and gut microbiota influence feed efficiency. However, the associations between gut microbiota and host genetics, as well as their combined contributions to feed efficiency in laying hens during the late laying period, remain largely unclear. METHODS: In total, 686 laying hens were used for whole-genome resequencing and liver transcriptome sequencing. 16S rRNA gene sequencing was conducted on gut chyme (duodenum, jejunum, ileum, and cecum) and fecal samples from 705 individuals. Amino acid-based formula and feeding outcomes in preterm infants with recurrent intolerance: A propensity score-matched study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: To evaluate whether transitioning from standard preterm formula to an amino acid-based formula (AAF) improves feeding outcomes in preterm infants with recurrent feeding intolerance (FI). METHODS: This single-center retrospective cohort study included infants ≤34 weeks' gestation who developed recurrent FI between 2023 and 2024. Infants transitioned to AAF constituted the exposure group, while controls continued standard preterm formula. Propensity scores were derived from gestational age, birth weight, sex, delivery mode, 5-minute Apgar score, antenatal steroid exposure,

Application of image analysis in the evaluation of blood feeding by Lutzomyia longipalpis using an artificial feeding system with synthetic membranes.

BACKGROUND: Blood feeding is essential for the maintenance of laboratory colonies and for experimental studies involving sand fly-parasite interactions. However, artificial feeding systems for Lutzomyia longipalpis, the principal vector of Leishmania infantum, the etiological agent of visceral leishmaniasis in the Americas, remain limited by low engorgement rates and methodological constraints in blood meal quantification. OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the feeding performance of Lu. longipalpis on different membranes in an artificial feeder and applied an image-based approach to quantify b

Early postnatal growth predictors of catch-up growth in term small-for-gestational-age infants: a nationwide propensity-score-matched study.

BACKGROUND: Infants born small for gestational age (SGA) are at risk for impaired growth and metabolic complications. However, the long-term effects of early feeding type on catch-up growth (CUG) in SGA infants remain controversial, and there have been no established anthropometric thresholds to predict later CUG. METHODS: This population-based study analyzed full-term SGA infants (birth weight <3rd percentile) from the Korean National Health Screening Program (2007-2014). Feeding type was classified as exclusively breastfeeding or exclusively formula-feeding based on consistent parent-report

Association Between Donor Human Milk Initiation Timing and Necrotizing Enterocolitis, Mortality, and Feeding Outcomes in Very-Low-Birth-Weight Infants: A Multicenter Retrospective Cohort Study Using Two Japanese Registries.

Background/Objectives: Early enteral feeding in preterm infants remains controversial because, despite promoting intestinal maturation, concerns about necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) persist. Donor human milk (DHM) is recommended when the mother's milk is unavailable, but the optimal initiation timing is unclear. This study evaluated the association between DHM initiation timing and outcomes in very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) infants in Japan. Methods: This multicenter retrospective cohort study used data from a national human milk bank registry (2018-2023) and the Neonatal Research Network of Ja

Alpha-pinene modulates feeding behavior and hypothalamic orexin-A expression in a rat model of painful temporomandibular disorder.

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are common conditions involving the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and masticatory muscles, often presenting with pain and impaired orofacial function. Painful TMD can disrupt jaw motor activities, including chewing and feeding behavior, reflecting alteration in muscle performance and central neuroregulation. The hypothalamic neuropeptide orexin A integrates pain, arousal, and energy balance and may be involved in these disturbances. This study examined whether intracerebroventricular (ICV) administration of alpha-pinene, an anti-inflammatory monot
