Pulmonary inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) are rarely reported in adult males. Given the low incidence of IMT and the lack of imaging references and pathological guidance, the misdiagnosis rate of IMT is high. In this article, we describe two cases of IMTs in the lungs. Both patients were adult males with lesions in the right lobe, a history of pulmonary tuberculosis, and a long period of refractory intermittent pulmonary inflammation. Our two male patients both experienced intermittent cough symptoms, but pulmonary IMTs were not suspected for a long time. Both patients were diagnose

Oil is frequently used as a solvent to inject lipophilic substances into the peritoneum of laboratory animals. Although mineral oil causes chronic peritoneal inflammation, little is known whether other oils are better suited. We show that olive, peanut, corn, or mineral oil causes xanthogranulomatous inflammation with depletion of resident peritoneal macrophages. However, there were striking differences in the severity of the inflammatory response. Peanut and mineral oil caused severe chronic inflammation with persistent neutrophil and monocyte recruitment, expansion of the vasculature, and fi

Neural diseases at the central nervous system including spinal cord injury (SCI) remain therapeutic challenges. Graphene materials are being delineated as alternative tools for neural repair. Herein, the regenerative ability of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) scaffolds to support pivotal features of neural repair at 4 months after SCI is assessed by an interdisciplinary approach. 3D randomly porous foams have been prepared in mechanical compliance with neural cells and tissues (Young's modulus of 1.3 ± 1.0 kPa) as demonstrated by atomic force microscopy techniques applied ex vivo. PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Cardiometabolic diseases increasingly afflict our aging, dysmetabolic population. Complex signals regulating low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein (LRP) and frizzled protein family members - the plasma membrane receptors for the cadre of Wnt polypeptide morphogens - contribute to the control of cardiovascular homeostasis.
RECENT FINDINGS: Both canonical (β-catenin-dependent) and noncanonical (β-catenin-independent) Wnt signaling programs control vascular smooth muscle (VSM) cell phenotypic modulation in cardiometabolic disease. LRP6 limits VSM proliferation, redu

RATIONALE: High-density lipoprotein (HDL) is a heterogeneous population of particles. Differences in the capacities of HDL subfractions to remove cellular cholesterol may explain variable correlations between HDL-cholesterol and cardiovascular risk and inform future targets for HDL-related therapies. The ATP binding cassette transporter A1 (ABCA1) facilitates cholesterol efflux to lipid-free apolipoprotein A-I, but the majority of apolipoprotein A-I in the circulation is transported in a lipidated state and ABCA1-dependent efflux to individual HDL subfractions has not been systematically studi

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Atherosclerosis is a lipid-induced chronic inflammatory cardiovascular disorder denoted by the infiltration of immune cells and the agglomeration of lipids in the intima, the innermost layer, of the arteries of large and medium sizes. Defective efferocytosis is a sign of insufficient inflammation resolution that results in the agglomeration of secondarily necrotic macrophages and foam cells, and constitutes an advanced lesion having a necrotic lipid core, indicating plaque vulnerability. The inflammation resolution is an active, highly coordinated process governed by speci…

BACKGROUND: People living with HIV (PLWH) exhibit a markedly elevated risk of developing atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), a phenomenon not entirely attributable to conventional risk factors, thereby indicating the existence of an immune-mediated residual risk. Trained immunity may represent a critical underlying mechanism.
OBJECTIVE: This review explores the potential of HIV infection-induced trained immunity, examining its underlying mechanisms and its role in the pathophysiology of ASCVD.
METHODS: PubMed databases were searched for articles on the association between trained

Epidemiologic studies detected an inverse relationship between HDL (high-density lipoprotein) cholesterol (HDL-C) levels and atherosclerotic … ion of HDL is reverse cholesterol transport, whereby HDL removes cholesterol from plaque macrophage foam cells and delivers it to the liver for processing and excretion into bile. Indeed, in several studies, HDL has shown inverse associations between HDL cholesterol efflux capacity and ASCVD in humans. Inflammation plays a key role in the pathogenesis of ath …

AIMS: Kisspeptin-10 (KP-10), a potent vasoconstrictor and inhibitor of angiogenesis, and its receptor, GPR54, have currently received much attention with respect to atherosclerosis, since both KP-10 and GPR54 are expressed at high levels in atheromatous plaques and restenotic lesions after wire-injury. The present review introduces the emerging roles of the KP-10/GPR54 system in atherosclerosis.
DATA SYNTHESIS: KP-10 suppresses migration and proliferation of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), and induces senescence in HUVECs. KP-10 increases adhesion of human monocytes to HUVECs

BACKGROUND: Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by pathological vascular alterations, including endothelial cell dysfunction and apoptosis, macrophage infiltration, lipid deposition within the intima. Due to this complex pathophysiology, current therapeutic approaches lack effective systems for the precise delivery of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agents to the affected sites.
RESULTS: Herein we developed a reactive oxygen species (ROS)-responsive M2 macrophage membrane-camouflaged biomimetic drug delivery nanosystem (MM@TIIA-NPs) to dual-targeted delivery tans

The widespread accumulation of polystyrene nanoplastic particles (NPPs) in the environment has raised significant human health concerns, specifically on immune function. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms behind NPP induced immune cell (monocyte/macrophage) toxicity and their relationship with existing pathological conditions remain largely unexplored. The current study explored the interaction of NPPs with serum proteins and composition of protein corona through proteomic analysis (LC-HRMS/MS). Further, we investigated the immunotoxic effects on THP-1 macrophage cells via various ce

The valorization of agro-industrial by-products into bio- and techno-functional ingredients is a key strategy for sustainable food systems, yet peanut oil cake (POC), a protein-rich residue of peanut oil extraction, remains underexploited. Its protein can be recovered as an isolate (PPI) and converted through enzymatic hydrolysis into antioxidant peanut protein hydrolysates (PPH). This study therefore aimed to optimize the enzymatic preparation of PPH from PPI using Alcalase® 2.4 L to maximize antioxidant activity (AA), and to carry out a comprehensive screening of their polypeptide profile, t

Organ shortages for transplantation in the United States impact over 100 000 patients, with 17 dying daily due to the lack of available organs. This growing need is exacerbated by the limited functionality and disease risk of donated organs. Tissue-engineered organs present a promising alternative, requiring optimized scaffold architecture and cell integration. Vascular networks within organs are essential for supplying oxygen and nutrients to cells, with a critical distance between blood vessels and surrounding tissue to allow effective diffusion. Various microfabrication techniques, such as

Adenosine is an endogenous nucleoside with a short half-life that regulates many physiological functions involving the heart and cardiovascular system. Among the cardioprotective properties of adenosine are its ability to improve cholesterol homeostasis, impact platelet aggregation and inhibit the inflammatory response. Through modulation of forward and reverse cholesterol transport pathways, adenosine can improve cholesterol balance and thereby protect macrophages from lipid overload and foam cell transformation. The function of adenosine is controlled through four G-protein coupled receptors

The synthesis of cholesterol esters by acyl-CoA:cholesterol acyltransferase (ACAT, EC 2.3.1.26) is an important component of cellular cholesterol homeostasis. Cholesterol ester formation also is hypothesized to be important in several physiologic processes, including intestinal cholesterol absorption, hepatic lipoprotein production, and macrophage foam cell formation in atherosclerotic lesions. Mouse tissue expression studies and the disruption of the mouse ACAT gene (Acact) have indicated that more than one ACAT exists in mammals and specifically that another enzyme is important in mouse live

Whipple disease (WD) is a rare systemic disease caused by Tropheryma whipplei and is characterized by the presence of foamy macrophages with periodic acid-Schiff-positive inclusions in tissues such as lamina propria. For the first time, we report the gene-expression profile of macrophages in intestinal lesions from a patient with WD. Microarray and real-time polymerase chain reaction revealed that genes encoding CCL18, cathepsins, scavenger receptor, interleukin-10, and lipid metabolites were up-regulated in intestinal lesions. This transcriptional pattern corresponds to that of M2/alternative

Aims: Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has a protective role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis by multiple pathways. Sirtuin-1 (SIRT1) is a histone deacetylase, as an essential mediated longevity gene, and has an anti-atherogenic effect by regulating the acetylation of some functional proteins. Whether SIRT1 is involved in protecting H2S in atherosclerosis and its mechanism remains unclear. Results: In ApoE-knockout atherosclerosis mice, treatment with an H2S donor (NaHS or GYY4137) reduced atherosclerotic plaque area, macrophage infiltration, aortic inflammation, and plasma lipid level. H2S treatm

Atherosclerosis is a complex, multifactorial disease and the leading underlying cause of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality worldwide. Beyond traditional risk factors, growing evidence highlights the critical role of environmental exposures in modulating atherogenesis. In real-world scenarios, individuals are exposed to complex mixtures of contaminants, including particulate matter, toxic metals, pesticides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and endocrine-disrupting chemicals. These combined exposures may exert additive, synergistic or antagonistic effects, resulting in biological response
