Kinetic characteristics and model prediction of benzene-based pollutant migration from cardboard to pear peel under varied environmental conditions.

BACKGROUND: Corrugated cardboard is commonly used for fruit packaging, and its benzene-based pollutants migrating to fruits pose significant safety risks - clarifying this migration is crucial. However, no quantitative predictive model currently exists for pollutant migration during fruit logistics transport. This study aims to systematically investigate the migration characteristics of six typical benzene-based pollutants (phenol, acetophenone, benzophenone, o-xylene, ethylbenzene, toluene) from corrugated cardboard to Korla fragrant pear peel, analyze the effects of temperature, relative hum

A new highly sensitive fluorescent probe for fluorescence sensing of formaldehyde in living cells/food samples.

Formaldehyde (FA), which is widely used in construction, pharmaceutical, and food industries, ranks among the top three indoor pollutants. As living standards improve, public awareness of food safety has gradually increased. Therefore, it is crucial for human health to find a simple and effective method for detecting FA levels in food. In this work, a new highly sensitive FA fluorescent probe, named LTY, is reported. When reacting with FA, the probe LTY produces an intense fluorescent signal due to the disruption of the PET effect. The probe LTY has been successfully used to image FA in living

Improving compound identification results by automatically recognizing in-source fragment ions in HRMS with AntDAS: A study on accurate pesticide screening in complex food samples.

Ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography combined with high-resolution mass spectrometry has been extensively used for compound identification in an untargeted manner. However, current methods still cannot accurately screen and identify compounds in the presence of in-source fragment ions. Here, we proposed an in-source fragment ion-based strategy to precisely recognize compounds. First, raw data files were analyzed with our newly developed AntDAS-DDA to perform feature detection and annotation. Second, in-source fragment ions from a compound were recognized based on tandem mass spectrometr

Dual-color and specific luminescence detection of Pd2+ ions using iridium(III) complex-based probes in food samples.

The toxicity of palladium (Pd) is highly associated with its oxidative states, thus it is important to develop specific detection methods for Pd2+ ions in food and environmental systems. However, the reliable and selective detection of Pd2+ ions remains challenging. Here, we report two iridium(III) complexes with dual colors (717 nm and 637 nm) for the specific detection of Pd2+ ions, with the 3,3'-diamino group being used as a specific recognition unit for Pd2+ ions for the first time. The dual-color probes showed a luminescence quenching response to Pd2+ ions in aqueous solution within 1 min

A liquid crystal-based sensor for real-time, selective, and visual detection of vanillin over coumarin in food samples.

This study reports the fabrication of a liquid crystal (LC)-based sensor for detecting and quantifying vanillin, a widely used food flavoring agent, and distinguishing it from the toxic adulterant coumarin. The sensing mechanism relies on host-guest interactions between β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), influencing LC alignment. Vanillin displaces SDS from the β-CD cavity, restoring homeotropic alignment observable under cross-polarizers and quantifiable via image analysis. The sensor detects vanillin at 60.0 ppm in water and 62.0 ppm in a food sample, both below the Worl

Construction of an enhanced electrochemical sensor for quercetin in food samples via binary MOF on MOF hybrids.

As the most active antioxidant in the flavonol family, quercetin (QR) exhibits favorable biochemical and pharmacological properties. Therefore, rapid and accurate determination of QR is of great importance. In this study, a π-conjugated molecule, 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene (HHTP) was employed to in-situ grow a conductive metal-organic framework (MOF) on CuCo-zeolitic imidazolate framework (CuCo-ZIF) by a simple one-step solvothermal coating method. This design enhances electron transfer, ultimately yielding a bimetallic MOF-on-MOF hybrid material (CuCo-ZIF@HHTP). The introduction of

A new bioluminescent probe for detecting formaldehyde in real food samples.

Formaldehyde (FA) is an important type of reactive carbonyl species (RCS). The development of a rapid and efficient method to quantify FA in food and biological samples is necessary. Herein, we have developed the first bioluminescent probe FA-Fluc with homoallyl amine to cage firefly D-luciferin (Fluc), which could react almost completely with FA via aza-Cope rearrangement in 4 h to afford a turn-on Bioluminescence (BL). The detection limit of FA-Fluc was 0.047 ppm; and could detect FA in different seafood, agricultural products, and cooking processes. FA-Fluc has a good selectivity for FA, wh

Causal inference of whole-grain foods' risk based on a generative adversarial network and Bayesian network.

Whole-grain foods (WGFs) constitute a large part of humans' daily diet, making risk identification of WGFs important for health and safety. However, existing research on WGFs has paid more attention to revealing the effects of a single hazardous substance or various hazardous substances on food safety, neglecting the mutual influence between individual hazardous substances and between hazardous substances and basic information. Therefore, this paper proposes a causal inference of WGFs' risk based on a generative adversarial network (GAN) and Bayesian network (BN) to explore the mutual influenc

Mature Listeria monocytogenes Biofilms Exhibit Reduced Susceptibility to Sanitizers - Relevance to the (Leafy Green) Fresh Food Supply Chain.

Salads and herbs are important for a healthy diet but during their processing and packaging, they may be exposed to environmental contamination from foodborne pathogens. Of particular concern is Listeria monocytogenes, a Gram-positive, facultative anaerobe, found ubiquitously in the environment. L. monocytogenes can survive and grow under harsh conditions such as refrigeration temperatures, low oxygen or nutrient concentrations, which is why it is a problem in the fresh food supply chain. Infection with L. monocytogenes can result in listeriosis, potentially fatal in immunocompromised patients

Development of a simple and rapid dipstick paper-based test strip for colorimetric determination of nitrate and nitrite in water and foodstuffs.

A rapid user-friendly paper-based test strip using zinc microparticles in conjugation with Griess reagent was developed for nitrite and nitrate detection. Test strips were fabricated using a simple and fast method of step-by-step immersion into reagents so that each strip contained a single detection pad for nitrite detection and another separate pad for nitrate detection. To reduce nitrate to nitrite, zinc microparticles suspended in ethanolic solution of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) were uniformly immobilized on the paper strips that were previously impregnated in the Griess reagent and dried.
