Associations between selective attention and soil-transmitted helminth infections, socioeconomic status, and physical fitness in disadvantaged children in Port Elizabeth, South Africa: An observational study.

BACKGROUND: Socioeconomically deprived children are at increased risk of ill-health associated with sedentary behavior, malnutrition, and helminth infection. The resulting reduced physical fitness, growth retardation, and impaired cognitive abilities may impede children's capacity to pay attention. The present study examines how socioeconomic status (SES), parasitic worm infections, stunting, food insecurity, and physical fitness are associated with selective attention and academic achievement in school-aged children. METHODOLOGY: The study cohort included 835 children, aged 8-12 years, from …

The Impact of Social Determinants of Health on Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease Among Adults in the United States.

Background/Objectives: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is a leading cause of chronic liver disease. It has … ong participants with food security (OR 0.71, 95% CI 0.55-0.91, p = 0.007) but not among those with food insecurity (OR 1.26, 95% CI 0.76-2.11, p = 0.4). Conclusions: Our findings identify the potential impact of SDOH on odds of MASLD and suggest increased importance of food security relative to other SDOH.

Obesity and Intersectionality: Brazil's Experience in Advancing Equity through Transformative Public Policies.

Obesity and food and nutrition insecurity are increasingly understood as syndemic outcomes of enduring social inequalities. In Brazil, these conditions disproportionately affect Black women in socially vulnerable contexts, due to the intersection of gender, race/ethnicity, and low socioeconomic status. In response, Brazil has launched the new Intersectoral Strategy for Obesity Prevention, which frames obesity as a multidetermined condition shaped by social, economic, cultural, and environmental factors. Grounded in intersectionality and rights-based governance, the Strategy is structured aroun

Examining the Impacts of Social Drivers of Health and Adverse Childhood Experiences on Children With Dermatological Disease Part II: A Framework and Guide for Pediatric Dermatologists.

Research has increasingly shown the importance of social drivers of health (SDH) and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) in dermatologic health outcomes, and as such, highlighted the role of physicians in identifying and addressing these in their practice. Children are a unique population as they face special barriers to care due to their relative inability to advocate for themselves and their increased likelihood of experiencing poverty, food insecurity, and housing insecurity in the United States. Additionally, ACEs have been shown to confer a greater risk of chronic conditions and a decrea…

[Taking Care of Asylum Seekers: Occupational Health Aspects with a Special Focus on Vaccination].

Employees and volunteers often feel insecure about the potential transmission of infectious diseases when taking care of asylum seekers. It could be shown that overall only a minor risk of infection emanates from asylum seekers. However, aspects of occupational health and vaccination should be kept in mind.Besides the standard vaccination the Standing Committee on Vaccination (STIKO) recommends for occupational indication, which is given for employees and volunteers in asylum facilities, vaccination against hepatitis A, hepatitis B, polio (if the last vaccination was more than 10 years before)

A Comprehensive Subcellular Atlas of the Toxoplasma Proteome via hyperLOPIT Provides Spatial Context for Protein Functions.

Apicomplexan parasites cause major human disease and food insecurity. They owe their considerable success to highly specialized cell compartments and structures. These adaptations drive their recognition, nondestructive penetration, and elaborate reengineering of the host's cells to promote their growth, dissemination, and the countering of host defenses. The evolution of unique apicomplexan cellular compartments is concomitant with vast proteomic novelty. Consequently, half of apicomplexan proteins are unique and uncharacterized. Here, we determine the steady-state subcellular location of tho…

Socio-economic determinants of household dietary diversity in a secondary African City: evidence from a community-based cross-sectional study in Bindura, Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: The quality of diets in low-income African cities is shaped by more than food availability alone but also reflects household cap … logistic regression. RESULTS: Household dietary diversity was negatively correlated with household food insecurity, indicating that households experiencing greater food access constraints tended to consume less diverse diets. The ordered logit model results revealed that access to transport, water and electricity, sources of vegetables, number of meals per day, …

Use of digital health tools to promote equitable and efficient health-related social needs screening and response.

Unmet health-related social needs (HRSNs), such as food insecurity, housing instability, transportation barriers, and caregiver stress, are associated with increased healthcare utilization and poorer health outcomes. Screening for HRSNs and addressing unmet needs in pediatric healthcare is crucial to improving child health across the life course. As HRSN screening becomes more widespread, digital health tools offer an opportunity to expand equitable screening and resource referral programs. These technologies can improve workflow efficiency, adapt to different clinical settings, and facilitate…

Thermal Vulnerability of Reef Fish and Implications for Subsistence Fisheries Throughout the Caribbean.

Dual biodiversity and climate crises have exacerbated declines in global fisheries, resulting in food insecurity for communities that depend on subsistence fishing. As fish populations change and shift their geographic distributions under a changing environment, long-term planning of fisheries management becomes critical for ensuring food security. Here, we first present physiologically informed species distribution models (pSDM) of seven finfish species in the Caribbean that are important for subsistence in some coastal areas. These models identified areas at risk of climate-driven declines a…
