Latent Granulomatous Foreign Body Reaction to Dermal Fillers: A Case Report.

Introduction: Cosmetic dermal fillers are increasingly being used to smooth out and correct facial contour deficiencies. They can categorically be classified on the basis of the biodegrading properties of the injectable material. A known but rare complication of dermal fillers is the formation of foreign body granulomas. Case Presentation: An 85-year-old woman with a remote history of cosmetic dermal filler injections presented with a left hemi-facial swelling. Histological examination revealed granulomas formed due to an inflammatory reaction to the injected silicone material. She was treated

Removal of a dental implant displaced into the maxillary sinus by means of the bone lid technique.

Background. Rehabilitation of edentulous jaws with implant-supported prosthesis has become a common practice among oral surgeons in the last three decades. This therapy presents a very low incidence of complications. One of them is the displacement of dental implants into the maxillary sinus. Dental implants, such as any other foreign body into the maxillary sinus, should be removed in order to prevent sinusitis. Methods. In this paper, we report a case of dental implant migrated in the maxillary sinus and removed by means of the bone lid technique. Results and Conclusion. The migration of den

Systemic siliconomas following breast implant rupture.

We report a case of a woman in her late 40s with a history of breast implant surgery following breast cancer treatment. She presented with asymmetrical breast enlargement, palpable contralateral axillary lymph nodes and cutaneous nodules on both forearms. In addition, imaging evaluation revealed intracapsular implant rupture, ipsilateral internal mammary enlarged lymph nodes and multiple mediastinal lymphadenopathies. Skin and axillary lymph node biopsy demonstrated a chronic granulomatous reaction with foreign-body giant cells related to silicone. Following surgical removal of the breast impl

Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound stimulation (LIPUS) modulates microglial activation following intracortical microelectrode implantation.

Microglia are important players in surveillance and repair of the brain. Implanting an electrode into the cortex activates microglia, produces an inflammatory cascade, triggers the foreign body response, and opens the blood-brain barrier. These changes can impede intracortical brain-computer interfaces performance. Using two-photon imaging of implanted microelectrodes, we test the hypothesis that low-intensity pulsed ultrasound stimulation can reduce microglia-mediated neuroinflammation following the implantation of microelectrodes. In the first week of treatment, we found that low-intensity p

Internal Plugging of a Traumatic Posterior Perforation Site Using Donor Sclera, Human Amniotic Membrane, and Fibrin Glue: A Novel Surgical Technique.

Purpose: To describe a novel surgical approach to treat traumatic posterior perforating injuries. Methods: A case and its findings were analyzed. Results: A 21-year-old man presented with bilateral intraocular foreign bodies that were sustained while hammering a metal railway pin. In the left eye, the foreign body was embedded in the posterior scleral wall, resulting in a 2 mm × 6 mm posterior perforation and partial retinal detachment. Silicone oil tamponade could optimize the chances for retinal reattachment; however, there was concern that the silicone oil would migrate through the posterio

Flexible Bronchoscopy for Sewing Pin Removal From Intrabronchial in a Young Adult: A Case Report From Calmette Hospital, Cambodia.

Foreign body aspiration is a frightening experience that can be life-threatening. Although it occurs more frequently in children, it can also affect adults, often related to neurological illness, dental procedures, or accidental aspiration during daily activities. Diagnosis relies on clinical history, imaging and bronchoscopy. We report a case of a 20-year-old Cambodian man, a wedding decorator, who accidentally inhaled a sewing pin while laughing during work. He presented with persistent cough and dyspnoea. Chest radiography initially showed the pin in the trachea, which later migrated into t

Transrectal impalement of an incense stick in a child presenting as foreign body in the urinary bladder.

The diversity of objects that can be found in the urinary bladder often surpasses the urologist's imagination and mostly they are introduced per urethrally. Impalement injuries of the rectum with bladder perforation have been rarely reported. A high index of clinical suspicion is required to make the diagnosis of bladder perforation while assessing patients presenting with rectal impalement. In this interesting case, a young male child presented with haematuria and dysuria. He had a history of accidentally sitting on an agarbatti (Indian incense stick) stand while playing, followed by perianal

A bronchopleurocutaneous fistula caused by an unusual foreign body aspiration simulating acute abdomen.

A 12-year-old boy was admitted to hospital for abdominal pain, vomiting and fever. On physical examination he had râles on the lower right hemithorax without any respiratory complaints. Chest X-ray revealed a condensation in the right lower chest. Abdominal findings were secondary to lobar pneumonia. Treatment of pneumonia with antibiotics showed no improvement over 2 days. On bronchoscopy no foreign body was seen, but pus was aspirated. Two days later a mass appeared on the right hemithorax and fistulized. An organic foreign body, Hordeum murinum, with 3-5 ml of pus was observed. Chest X-ray

Migrating mesh mimicking colonic malignancy.

The use of prosthetic mesh is the current acceptable standard for the repair of hernias. Recurrence rate has been greatly reduced since Lichtensen in 1986 first described mesh repair of inguinal hernias. The most common complication arising from inguinal hernia repair even with mesh is recurrence. There are isolated reports of migrated mesh in the three decades of mesh use in hernia repair. We present a case report of a migrated mesh plug presenting with features highly suggestive of an intra-abdominal neoplasm in a 63-year-old man who presented with weight loss, anorexia, fatigue, and a palpa

Long-term management of extensive tracheal stenosis due to formic acid chemical burn.

We report on a 26-year-old woman who during early infancy (6 months) suffered from a chemical burn of the skin and upper airways due to spill of formic acid powder. Twenty years after the initial injury, she presented with dyspnea and stridor due to severe tracheal stenosis. Several interventional bronchoscopic manipulations were initiated: incision of the stenotic lesion with Nd:YAG laser and dilatation with a valvuloplasty balloon which enabled silicone stent placement which was subsequently kept in place for 3 years. Complications during the 4th year after stenting led to the successful rep

Wandering projectile, a rare cause of acute urinary retention.

BACKGROUND: Urethral obstruction due to retained projectile migrating into the genitourinary system has rarely been reported. The literature describes two main methods of retained projectile removal from the genitourinary system: (1) spontaneous expulsion during voiding and (2) manual extraction due to urethral obstruction causing acute urinary retention. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: We present a case in which a 23-year-old man presented with acute urinary retention four days after suffering a gunshot wound to the right distal posterolateral thigh. A retained projectile eroded through the posterior

Iatrogenic vesicocolic fistula after gynecologic surgery: a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: We present a unique case of a vesicocolic fistula (VCF) that occurred postoperatively after ovarian cyst surgery, caused by the migration of an intraoperatively forgotten gauze into the urinary bladder. This represents a very rare etiology of VCFs. CASE PRESENTATION: A patient who had undergone surgery for a giant left ovarian cyst 5 months prior presented with recurrent urinary tract infections and an ultrasound image suggestive of a bladder stone. Cystoscopy, contrast-enhanced computed tomography, and colonoscopy confirmed a VCF with an intravesical foreign body

Video-mediastinoscopy assisted fish bone extraction and superior Medistinal abscess debridement.

BACKGROUND: Mediastinum abscess caused by sharp esophageal foreign body perforation usually needs surgical treatment, and the surgical procedures vary according to size of perforation and scope of abscess, etc. For special case with small esophageal mucosal crevasse and focal abscess confined to mediastinum, minimally invasive surgery with guidance of video-mediastinoscopy would be an alternative method, however, application of video-mediastinoscopy in this life-threatening situation was rarely reported. CASE PRESENTATION: One patient with detention of fish bone stuck in the esophagus develop

A rare case of abdominal foreign bodies; laparoscopic removal of a sewing needle.

BACKGROUND: Foreign body (FB) ingestion is a common condition. Mostly FBs are found ingested accidently or intentionally in children and adults with mental status alterations. Depending on the type of object, different complications can occur. There exist numerous methods for removing each specific FB. Fortunately, most FBs tend to move uneventfully through the gastrointestinal tract without any intervention; but managing some foreign objects can be difficult and lead to severe complications. Endoscopy helps with the diagnosis and treatment of these cases, but the time of the management plays

Internal jugular vein thrombosis by sewing needle ingestion.

INTRODUCTION: The internal jugular vein thrombosis is usually due to intravenous drug abuse, prolonged central venous catheterization or deep head-neck infections or trauma. Related malignancies, or inflammatory etiologies are described. Our case is interesting by the ingestion of a sewing needle that passes from the pharynx to the internal jugular vein via migration, leading to life-threatening complications: deep neck space infection and internal jugular vein thrombosis. CASE REPORT: We report a case of a 40 years old patient, for acute cervical cellulitis in a context of odynophagia and fe

Outcomes following combined median sternotomy and ventral midline laparotomy for bicavitary penetrating wooden foreign bodies.

Combined abdominal and thoracic pathology caused by extra-gastrointestinal migration of an ingested wooden foreign body (WFB) is an uncommon but serious injury. Presenting clinical signs are typically nonspecific and, in the absence of observed WFB ingestion, diagnosis is challenging. Treatment requires concurrent abdominal and thoracic surgical exploration to remove the WFB and address injuries caused by its migration. This case series describes perioperative characteristics and outcomes in 4 dogs following combined median sternotomy and ventral midline laparotomy (CMSVML) for bicavitary pene

Silicone Migration from Intact Saline Breast Implants.

Breast augmentation is a widely performed surgical procedure worldwide, predominantly using silicone gel-filled implants. Concerns have primarily revolved around ruptures and the potential health risks associated with leaked silicone from silicone gel-filled implants. Cases of silicone migration from the shell of saline breast implants remain scarce. This case report introduces a unique case of a 66-year-old patient with silicone migration from intact saline breast implants. The patient presented with a range of symptoms consistent with breast implant illness. Radiological findings suggested t
