The hip joints of growing rats have been dislocated experimentally to determine how this affects pelvic shape and acetabular orientation. After hip dislocation the innominate bone tilts laterally in the frontal plane. It bends anteriorly in the sagittal plane and rotates contralaterally in the coronal plane. No significant acetabular anteversion develops.

Focal dome osteotomy (FDO) is a cylindrically shaped osteotomy, with corresponding bone cuts rotating around the central axis of the deformity. Thus, complete correction can be achieved without secondary translation. FDO provides high adjustability of the bone ends, optimal bone contact, and high primary stability. As with straight cut closing, neutral, and opening-wedge osteotomies, FDO allows closing, neutral, and opening corrections. Opening FDO allows preservation of bone contact, whereas closing FDO does not require removal of bone stock. The osteotomy can be modified to tighten the media

BACKGROUND: Scaphocephaly is a common cranial deformity characterized by a long, narrow head, frontal bossing, and a sharp, prominent occiput. These features can affect brain integrity and potentially lead to neurological impairment. Various techniques for correcting sagittal synostosis have been described, each with its own advantages and challenges. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of floating bilateral parietal bone flaps in improving head shape in patients with scaphocephaly.
METHODS: This study examined patients with nonsyndromic sagittal synostosis who underwent surgery using t

BACKGROUND: Approximately 20 percent of patients require cranioplasty for defects after fronto-orbital advancement. The authors hypothesized that corticocancellous cranial particulate bone placed over exposed dura at the time of fronto-orbital advancement would decrease the frequency of incomplete ossification.
METHODS: The authors retrospectively analyzed consecutive children who underwent fronto-orbital advancement for craniosynostosis between 1988 and 2006. In group I, cranial gaps resulting from frontal advancement were left open and allowed to heal spontaneously. In group II, corticocanc

Typical transcranial approaches are insufficient for adequate visualization and resection of skull base tumors. Different approaches with multiple modifications have been attempted. Here, we describe a new approach for a lesion that is central and hard to treat by conventional craniotomy and successful reconstruction with calvarial bone graft and titanium mesh plate. A 69-year-old female patient presented with recurrent meningioma. The tumor had invaded the frontal lobe, right supraorbital rim, and ethmoidal bone. We performed a modified anterior craniofacial approach that fully exposed the tu

Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) is a congenital disorder of bone development characterized by persistently open or delayed closure of cranial sutures and wormian bones, hypoplastic and/or aplastic clavicles, wide pubic symphysis, dental anomalies and short stature. The condition is inherited as an autosomal-dominant trait and the human CBFA1 gene has been identified as the CCD gene. We describe a prenatal form of the skeletal disorder that included clavicular hypoplasia, absence of ossification of the cranial parietal bones and very poor ossification of the frontal and pubic bones. Growth restri

The deformities of craniofacial bones in brachycephaly (n = 2) and plagiocephaly (n = 2) were compared using three-dimensional skull replica … sed by high, protruding facial bones, as found on the affected side in plagiocephaly. Secondly, the frontal bones are flattened and positioned posteriorly in the anteroposterior direction, which also helps to mask the underdevelopment of the middle-inferior facial bones. Finally, as bony deformities are symmetrical in brachycephaly, they are not as obvious as …

Traumatic eyeball luxation is a rare clinical condition with a dramatic presentation. Here, we describe a unique case of traumatic globe luxation and complete optic nerve transection caused by heavy object compression. A 45-year-old male automobile mechanic was injured when a truck slipped from its supports, crushing his head and face. On arrival, his right eyeball was obviously displaced anteriorly and he had no light perception. Computed tomography revealed complex frontal bone and facial fractures with underlying brain contusion in addition to complete transection of the right optic nerve. …

The focus on nonsyndromic craniosynostosis, the most common type of isolated craniosynostosis, is sagittal, followed by unilateral coronal, bilateral coronal, metopic, and lambdoid, in order of decreasing frequency. Certain forms of craniosynostosis display a sex predilection. For example, boys outnumber girls in a 4:1 ratio in sagittal synostosis, but girls outnumber boys in a 3:2 ratio in unilateral coronal synostosis. Other forms, such as metopic, lambdoid, and bilateral coronal synostosis, demonstrate no sex dominances tract.

Diagnosis of craniosynostosis is based on clinical aspects but may be difficult in some cases where characteristic features are missing and radiographic imaging is necessary. In this context near-field high-frequency ultrasound has been used to evaluate the sonographic characteristics of synostotic sutures and its potential confirming the correct diagnosis. Sutures of 26 infants, aged 2-7 months, were investigated by ultrasound (Siemens Elegra, 7.5 MHz linear scanner). Sonographic features of synostotic sutures were correlated to CT imaging and compared to the sonographic and histopathological

In the treatment of fronto-basal cerebrocranial trauma and primary or secondary orbital tumors, definitive surgical intervention in one sitting has proven very successful. The orbital roof, the lateral orbital walls, and the frontal base are reconstructed with a bone meal/fibrin sealant plastic, whereas the orbital rims are revised using available bone fragments refitted using osteosynthetic procedures. Remaining calotte defects are covered alloplastically with Refobacin-Palacos. Bones can be easily remodeled with the bone meal/fibrin sealant plastic. The fibrin sealant holds the shape in regi

Compared with long bone that arises from the mesoderm, the major portion of the maxillofacial bones and the front bone of the skull are deri … nsmembrane protein 5 (IFITM5) and are specifically located around the periosteum of the jawbone and frontal bone. Additionally, these CMSSCs exhibit strong self-renewal and osteogenic differentiation capacities but lower chondrogenic differentiation potency, mediating intramembranous bone formation without cartilage formation. IFITM5+ cells are also observed i …

BACKGROUND: Aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is a benign expansible cystic lesion most often occuring during the second decade of life. It may occur in any bone in the body. The etiology and pathophysiology remain unclear. Treatment has been intralesional curettage. Spontaneous regression is not common. Other surgical options have been suggested.
CLINICAL CASE: We describe the case of an 8-year-old asymptomatic patient with spontaneous regression of a frontal aneurysmal bone cyst in a 4-month period.
CONCLUSIONS: In the diagnosed cases of ABC on the skull it is important to establish differential

A case of unifocal Langerhans' cell histiocytosis or eosinophilic granuloma in a child is reported where the frontal, zygomatic and maxillary bones of the left orbital wall are affected. As eosinophilic granuloma is a rare disease and the involvement of maxillary bone in orbital eosinophilic granuloma is not well documented in the literature, this case is reported for its unusual involvement of 3 bones at a single site. The diagnosis was established by clinical, radiological and histological findings. As no other system or site was involved and considering the osseous involvement of multiple b

The study was undertaken to examine the effect of posteroanterior traction in an 11-year-old boy with maxillonasal dysplasia. Movement of the maxillary bones and of the mandible was recorded, by means of roentgen stereophotogrammetry, in relationship to the frontal bone during and after treatment. In the examined child face-mask therapy mainly influenced the position of the mandible while the recorded advancement of the maxillary bones was slight (0.6 mm.). It is possible that the limited maxillary response to traction may be due to insufficient growth capacity of the circummaxillary sutures i…
