Different mean thickness implicates involvement of the cortex in migraine.

The results of neuroimaging studies on migraines have shown that the functions and functional connectivity networks of some brain regions are altered in migraine patients, and different brain structure volumes have also been observed in recent years. However, it is still not known whether the mean thickness of the cortex is different in migraine patients.A total of 48 migraine without aura (MWoA) patients in interictal phase and 48 healthy controls were enrolled in this study. All subjects received neurological and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations. Automatic segmentation processin

Coordinate-based (ALE) meta-analysis of brain activation in patients with fibromyalgia.

There are an increasing number of neuroimaging studies that allow a better understanding of symptoms, neural correlates and associated conditions of fibromyalgia. However, the results of these studies are difficult to compare, as they include a heterogeneous group of patients, use different stimulation paradigms, tasks, and the statistical evaluation of neuroimaging data shows high variability. Therefore, this meta-analytic approach aimed at evaluating potential alterations in neuronal brain activity or structure related to pain processing in fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) patients, using quantit

Cognitive features of essential tremor: a review of the clinical aspects and possible mechanistic underpinnings.

The classical concept of essential tremor (ET) as a monosymptomatic tremorogenic disorder has been questioned in the last decade as new evidence has been described. Clinical, neuroimaging, and pathological studies have described a probable structural basis (mainly in cerebellum) and evidence that ET is associated with subtle clinical cerebellar deficits and several non-motor clinical manifestations, such as cognitive and mood disorders. We performed literature searches in Medline, ISI Web of Knowledge, and PsycInfo databases. The aim of this review is to describe cognitive deficits associated

The angular gyrus in developmental dyslexia: task-specific differences in functional connectivity within posterior cortex.

Converging evidence from neuroimaging studies of developmental dyslexia reveals dysfunction at posterior brain regions centered in and around the angular gyrus in the left hemisphere. We examined functional connectivity (covariance) between the angular gyrus and related occipital and temporal lobe sites, across a series of print tasks that systematically varied demands on phonological assembly. Results indicate that for dyslexic readers a disruption in functional connectivity in the language-dominant left hemisphere is confined to those tasks that make explicit demands on assembly. In contrast

Mediators of cognitive impairment in cerebral amyloid angiopathy.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) is associated with cognitive decline. CAA has diverse impacts on brain structure and function; however, the brain lesions that mediate the association of CAA with cognition are not understood well. AIMS: To determine the degree to which CAA neuroimaging biomarkers mediate the association of CAA with cognitive dysfunction. METHODS: We analyzed cross-sectional data of patients with probable CAA and controls without cognitive impairment from the Functional Assessment of Vascular Reactivity study. Neuropsychological tests were grouped into domains of

Evaluating Cortical Alterations in Patients With Chronic Back Pain Using Neuroimaging Techniques: Recent Advances and Perspectives.

Chronic back pain (CBP) is a leading cause of disability and results in considerable socio-economic burdens worldwide. Although CBP patients are commonly diagnosed and treated with a focus on the "end organ dysfunction" (i.e., peripheral nerve injuries or diseases), the evaluation of CBP remains flawed and problematic with great challenges. Given that the peripheral nerve injuries or diseases are insufficient to define the etiology of CBP in some cases, the evaluation of alterations in the central nervous system becomes particularly necessary and important. With the development of advanced neu

Altered structure of cortical sulci in gilles de la Tourette syndrome: Further support for abnormal brain development.

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by the presence of motor and vocal tics. We hypothesized that patients with this syndrome would present an aberrant pattern of cortical formation, which could potentially reflect global alterations of brain development. Using 3 Tesla structural neuroimaging, we compared sulcal depth, opening, and length and thickness of sulcal gray matter in 52 adult patients and 52 matched controls. Cortical sulci were automatically reconstructed and identified over the whole brain, using BrainVisa software. We focused on frontal, p

Structural and functional brain changes in middle-aged type 2 diabetic patients: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is an emerging risk factor for cognitive impairment. Whether this impairment is a direct effect of this metabolic disorder on brain function, a consequence of vascular disease, or both, remains unknown. Structural and functional neuroimaging studies in patients with T2DM could help to elucidate this question. OBJECTIVE: We designed a cross-sectional study comparing 25 T2DM patients with 25 age- and gender-matched healthy control participants. Clinical information, APOE genotype, lipid and glucose analysis, structural cerebral magnetic resonance imag…

Brain reactions to the use of sensorized hand prosthesis in amputees.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated for the first time the presence of chronic changes in the functional organization of sensorimotor brain areas induced by prolonged training with a bidirectional hand prosthesis. METHODS: A multimodal neurophysiological and neuroimaging evaluation of brain functional changes occurring during training in five consecutive amputees participating to experimental trials with robotic hands over a period of 10 years was carried out. In particular, modifications to the functional anatomy of sensorimotor brain areas under resting conditions were explored in order to check for

Increased functional connectivity of the posterior cingulate cortex with the lateral orbitofrontal cortex in depression.

To analyze the functioning of the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) in depression, we performed the first fully voxel-level resting state functional-connectivity neuroimaging analysis of depression of the PCC, with 336 patients with major depressive disorder and 350 controls. Voxels in the PCC had significantly increased functional connectivity with the lateral orbitofrontal cortex, a region implicated in non-reward and which is thereby implicated in depression. In patients receiving medication, the functional connectivity between the lateral orbitofrontal cortex and PCC was decreased back towa

Frontal Cortex Entropy Derived From Resting-State fNIRS for Brain Age Prediction in Major Depressive Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the potential of frontal brain entropy (BEN) metrics derived from resting-state functional near-infrared spectroscopy (rs-fNIRS) as neurophysiological biomarkers for predicting brain age in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). METHODS: Rs-fNIRS data (26 channels) were acquired from the frontal cortex of 49 healthy controls (HCs) and 35 MDD patients. Time-series signals for oxyhemoglobin (HbO), deoxyhemoglobin (HbR), and total hemoglobin (HbT) were extracted. Static BEN was computed as permutation entropy (PE) using the full time series for each cha

Structural brain alterations in anorexia nervosa: a global brain volume and anatomical likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analysis combined with a functional decoding approach.

Substantial brain volume loss is well-documented during acute anorexia nervosa (AN); however, longitudinal outcomes are unclear. Our comprehensive meta-analysis investigated global and regional structural brain alterations in adult and adolescent individuals with AN by extracting reported brain volume scores and neuroimaging coordinates from the literature. Results showed significant global brain volume reductions in gray matter (GM), white matter (WM), and increases in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in acute AN (N = 1130 patients; N = 40 papers), gradually improving upon weight rehabilitation. Executive functions and associated brain volumetry in children with persistent stunting and catch-up growth.

Early childhood stunting can result in sub-optimal executive functions (EF), affecting academic achievements and economic potential in later life. This study hypothesized that children always stunted (AS) at ages 2, 5 and 9 years had lower EF than those who were never stunted (NS). A birth-cohort in Vellore, India was followed up with periodic anthropometric and development/cognitive measures over 2, 5 and 9 years of age. Based on stunting status at these time points, children were classified as NS, stunted at 2 years and caught up by 5 years (S2N5), stunted at 2 and 5 years but caught up late

Exploring social impairment in those with opioid use disorder: linking impulsivity, childhood trauma, and the prefrontal cortex.

BACKGROUND: Challenges with social functioning, which is a hallmark of opioid use disorder (OUD), are a drawback in treatment adherence and maintenance. Yet, little research has explored the underlying mechanisms of this impairment. Impulsivity and corresponding neural alterations may be at the center of this issue. Childhood adversity, which has been linked to both impulsivity and poorer treatment outcomes, could also affect this relationship. This study explores the relationship between impulsivity, social functioning, and their neural correlates in the prefrontal cortex, while examining the

Exploration of auditory statistical learning, socioeconomic status, and language outcomes in Bangladeshi children: A functional near-infrared spectroscopy study.

Auditory statistical learning, or the ability to detect statistical regularities in continuously presented stimuli, is thought to be one element that underlies language acquisition. Prior studies have uncovered behavioral and neural correlates of statistical learning, yet additional work is needed from low- and middle-income countries to explore whether statistical learning varies across cultures or underlies associations often found between socioeconomic status (SES) and language outcomes. In the present study, we explored the feasibility of using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS)
