BACKGROUND: Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) release volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which promote plant growth.
RESULTS: A potential PGPR strain GX14001 was isolated from marine samples, and the VOCs produced by GX14001 significantly promoted tobacco (Nicotiana benthamiana) growth in a plate experiment. Based on 16S rRNA sequence alignment and physiological and biochemical characterization, GX14001 was identified as Microbacterium aurantiacum. Comparative transcriptome analysis was conducted between GX14001 VOCs-treated tobacco and the control; it was found that 1286 genes were

A dwarf mutant with short branches (csdf) was identified from EMS-induced mutagenesis. Bulked segregant analysis sequencing and map-based cloning revealed CsKAO encoding ent-kaurenoic acid oxidase as the causal gene. Plant architecture is the primary target of artificial selection during domestication and improvement based on the determinate function for fruit yield. Plant architecture is regulated by complicated genetic networks, more underlying mechanism remains to be elucidated. Here, we identified a dwarf mutant (csdf) in an EMS-induced cucumber population, and genetic analysis revealed th

Plants have evolved sophisticated mechanisms to balance growth and defense. The evolutionarily conserved polymerase-associated factor 1 complex (PAF1C) plays multiple roles in transcription. Here, we show that PAF1C regulates the growth-defense tradeoff by repressing defense genes expression in Arabidopsis. Loss of PAF1C leads to increased expression of defense genes, enhanced disease resistance, but compromised growth. Mechanistically, PAF1C binds to defense genes, where it interacts with histone deacetylases, such as HDA6, to promote histone deacetylation, thereby repressing defense genes ex

Effects of transgenic expression of dual positional maize lipoxygenase-1 on the defense system were analyzed in rice. The activities of hydroperoxidelyase and antioxidative enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase, peroxidase) were increased and high levels of aldehydes including malondialdehyde were produced. The constitutive level of jasmonic was slightly increased and the constitutive salicylic acid level was decreased. Kinetic analysis of wound response indicated that the levels of jasmonic acid and salicylic acid are inversely correlated in nully transgenic rice plants, suggesting that the

Suppression of δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase in citrus disrupts chloroplast development and photosynthetic stability, triggering broad transcriptional reprogramming across metabolic, stress, and hormone signaling pathways. Chlorosis is often the earliest visible indicator of plant stress, whether caused by abiotic or biotic factors. Complex stress networks can ultimately lead to the loss of photosynthetic organelles and pigments, resulting in reduced cell viability and eventually, cell death. However, plants possess coordinated mechanisms to maintain homeostasis under adverse conditions. δ

BACKGROUND: Sorghum has a strong tolerance to multi-abiotic stresses such as drought, heat, poor soil fertility, and salinity, yet its growth and development are significantly affected by extreme abiotic stresses, ultimately reducing grain yield. Peroxidase (POD) proteins, which are members of the oxidoreductase enzyme family, play an important role in protecting plants against multi-abiotic stress. However, this gene family has rarely been studied in sorghum.
RESULTS: In this study, 114 POD gene members (SbPODs) were identified in sorghum and distributed unevenly throughout 10 chromosomes. P

The photosynthetic capacity of mature leaves increases after several days' exposure to constant or intermittent episodes of high light (HL) and is manifested primarily as changes in chloroplast physiology. How this chloroplast-level acclimation to HL is initiated and controlled is unknown. From expanded Arabidopsis leaves, we determined HL-dependent changes in transcript abundance of 3844 genes in a 0-6 h time-series transcriptomics experiment. It was hypothesized that among such genes were those that contribute to the initiation of HL acclimation. By focusing on differentially expressed trans

The B class of MADS-box floral homeotic genes specifies petal and stamen identity in angiosperms. While this group is one of the most studied in herbaceous plant species, it has remained largely uncharacterized in woody species such as grapevine. Although the B class PI/GLO and AP3/DEF clades have been extensively characterized in model species, the role of the TM6 subgroup within the AP3 clade is not completely understood, since it is absent in Arabidopsis thaliana. In this study, the coding regions of VvTM6 and VvAP3 and the genomic sequence of VvPI, were cloned. VvPI and AtPI were confirmed

Most land plants engage in arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) symbiosis with Glomeromycotina fungi for better access to mineral nutrients. The plant hormone ethylene suppresses AM development, but a molecular explanation for this phenomenon is lacking. Here we show that ethylene inhibits the expression of many genes required for AM formation in Lotus japonicus. These genes include strigolactone biosynthesis genes, which are needed for fungal activation, and Common Symbiosis genes, which are required for fungal entry into the root. Application of strigolactone analogs and ectopic expression of the Comm

BACKGROUND: Castor (Ricinus communis L.) is an important seed oil crop. Castor oil is a highly demanded oil for several industrial uses. Current castor bean varieties suffer from low productivity and high risk of insect pests and diseases. High productive and pest/disease resistance varieties are needed. Lignin has been associated to the resistance for pest, disease and lodging. Lignin is produced from several metabolites of the phenylpropanoid pathway. PAL is the key enzyme of the phenylpropanoid pathway. The gene PAL may assist in the improvement of resistance of castor bean.
RESULTS: The R

Heptanoyl salicylic acid (HSA) is a salicylic acid (SA) derivative obtained by esterification of 2-OH benzoic acid with heptanoic acid. In wheat, the protection levels obtained against Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici (Bgt) increased from 50% with SA to 95% with HSA. Using molecular, biochemical and cytological approaches, we investigated here how wheat lipid metabolism is differentially activated by SA and HSA in both infectious and non-infectious conditions, and how Bgt infectious process is altered by both inducers. First, in the absence of Bgt, continuous lipoxygenase (LOX)-encoding gene e

Unraveling the intricacies of soybean cyst nematode (Heterodera glycines) race 4 resistance and susceptibility in soybean breeding lines-11-452 (highly resistant) and Dongsheng1 (DS1, highly susceptible)-was the focal point of this study. Employing cutting-edge N6-methyladenosine (m6A) and RNA sequencing techniques, we delved into the impact of m6A modification on gene expression and plant defense responses. Through the evaluation of nematode development in both resistant and susceptible roots, a pivotal time point (3 days postinoculation) for m6A methylation sequencing was identified. Our seq

This study explored the effects of preharvest L-Phenylalanine (L-Phe) sprays on cuticle development and associated lipid metabolism in muskmelon (Cucumis melo L.) fruit. Spraying 8 mM L-Phe during fruit growth increased cuticle thickness and the accumulation of hydroxy fatty acids, fatty alcohols, alkanes, and triterpenoids. L-Phe enhanced the activities of key enzymes (FAT, LACS, FAR, SQE, OSC) and upregulated genes involved in fatty acid elongation, hydroxylation, alkane and triterpenoid biosynthesis. It also increased ATP-binding cassette (ABCG) transporter and lipid transfer protein (LTP)

Cation/proton antiporters (CAXs) are key membrane transporters involved in plant development and stress adaptation. In this study, five CsCAX genes (CsCAX1-CsCAX5) were identified from the Citrus sinensis genome through comprehensive bioinformatic analysis. All CsCAX proteins are hydrophobic with 10-11 transmembrane domains, predominantly composed of α-helices and random coils, and are localized to either the plasma membrane or vacuole. Phylogenetic analysis classified them into two subfamilies (IA and IB). Promoter prediction identified stress- and hormone-responsive cis-elements (e.g., LTR,

Low-temperature storage induces lignification in red-fleshed loquat fruit, adversely affecting quality, while modified low-temperature conditioning (mLTC, 5°C for 2 days before 0°C storage) alleviates this effect. Here, integrated sRNAome and transcriptome analysis of 'Dahongpao' (DHP) loquat under 0°C and mLTC treatments identified miR164 as a key regulator whose expression is suppressed at 0°C but partially restored under mLTC. As a result, one of its target genes EjNAC3-like (EjNAC3L)'s expression level was upregulated during chilling-induced lignification but was suppressed by mLTC. Molecu

Cold stress severely restricts tomato growth, yield, and geographical distribution. However, the molecular mechanisms governing phenylpropanoid-mediated cold tolerance remain incompletely understood, especially the upstream regulators of specific phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) isoforms. In this study, we functionally characterized SlPAL3 and identified its putative upstream transcriptional activator SlMYB58 in tomato. Using phylogenetic analysis, subcellular localization, and the generation of CRISPR-Cas9 knockout (CR) and overexpression (OE) transgenic lines, we demonstrated that cytoplasm

Temperature critically influences flowering time, yet the molecular mechanisms governing this process in perennial woody species remain largely elusive. Based on flowering characteristics, Osmanthus fragrans Lour. can be divided into two major groups: once-flowering types and continuous-flowering types (the Asiaticus group). Among these, the floral transition of continuous-flowering types is precisely regulated by ambient temperature. Here, using O. fragrans 'Sijigui' (a cultivar of the Asiaticus group) as experimental material, we combined phenotypic observation with paraffin sectioning analy

Seed longevity (SL) is vital for ensuring food security worldwide. However, the genetic basis of SL has been scarcely documented. Here, we report the cloning of a major SL locus, qSL6, encoding a fatty acyl-ACP thioesterase type B. SL6 is functionally conserved in regulating palmitic acid synthesis in seeds, conferring higher oxidation durability and SL in various species. Through the VP1-SL6 module, a seed desiccation-derived ABA signal is transmitted via VP1, which directly activates SL6 transcription to alter the fatty acid composition and elevate SL in seeds. The ancestral elite allele SL6

miR172 and its target genes TOE1 and TOE2 regulate low nitrogen (LN) dependent root elongation growth in Arabidopsis thaliana. Overexpression of miR172 suppresses LN mediated PR elongation. Reduced responses of miR172 overexpression lines and toe1-2;toe2-1 mutants to LN are associated with impaired nitrate assimilation, suggesting a role of the miR172-TOE1/TOE2 module in regulating plant growth under LN conditions. MicroRNAs (miRNAs), a class of small non-coding regulatory RNAs, play important roles in various aspects of plant growth and stress responses, including nutrient deficiency. The ava

Previous studies have demonstrated differential regulations of sucrose transporters (SUTs) on crop yield among species. Meanwhile, information about the possible regulation of SUTs on crop quality is lacking. Here, we investigated the regulation of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) SlSUT4 on the fruit yield and quality. The results showed that SlSUT4 overexpression increased the fruit yield, while the effect of silencing this gene on the yield was dependent on the cultivation conditions - decreased under non-pruning conditions but did not change under pruning conditions. Alteration of SlSUT4 expre
