Non-small cell neuroendocrine carcinomas (NSNECs) of the sinonasal tract are rare. Due to their rarity, the clinical and pathologic characteristics of these neoplasms are not adequately understood. The decision for aggressive reoperation after discovery of an appendiceal carcinoid is generally based upon criteria such as size, grade, degree of involvement of the mesoappendix or the appendiceal base, lymphovascular invasion, and the presence of goblet cell or adenocarcinoid features. No guidelines currently exist for the management of perforated appendiceal carcinoids. We present a case of perforated appendiceal carcinoid that was subsequently treated with right hemicolectomy, and we review the pertinent literature.

PURPOSE: To report the clinical and histologic features of cystic benign melanosis.
METHODS: This case series reports on the clinical and histopathologic features of 3 patients with enlarging, cystic, brown, pigmented, conjunctival lesions.
RESULTS: Slit-lamp examination showed cystic melanotic lesions of bulbar conjunctiva. Histopathologic examination of the biopsy specimens showed epithelial lined cysts in the substantia propria, goblet cells, and secondary pigmentation of basilar keratinocytes.

Surgical removal of the Harderian gland of the domestic fowl resulted in increased secretory activity in the lacrimal gland and also in an increase in goblet cell numbers along the length of the lacrimal gland duct. Plasma cells were more numerous in the lacrimal glands of operated birds and they were capable of antibody responses to both systemically and topically applied bovine serum albumin (BSA). Gel diffusion studies showed the presence of anti-BSA activity in the tears and serum of fowls stimulated after surgical removal of the Harderian gland.

This study was performed to evaluate the changes of tear film and ocular surface caused by smoking. Symptom scoring, tear film break-up time (BUT), basal tear secretion test, corneal sensitivity test, keratoepitheliopathy scoring, and conjunctival impression cytology were performed in 29 smokers (58 eyes) and 26 non-smokers (52 eyes). Tear film BUT, basal tear secretion, corneal sensitivity, and squamous metaplasia were 7.71+/-2.66 sec, 6.29+/-2.85 mm, 53.69+/-5.69 mm, and 2.45+/-1.26 in smokers and 9.62+/-3.14 sec, 10.04+/-3.87 mm, 56.46+/-4.79 mm, and 1.12+/-0.83 in non-smokers, respectively

BACKGROUND: We report the second case of enteric-type villous adenoma of the vulva. The differential diagnosis, histogenesis, and pathogenesis are discussed.
CASE: A 66-year-old woman had a tumor resected from the posterior aspect of the vulva. The tumor was characterized by its villous architecture, with columnar epithelium and goblet cells. This vulvar tubulovillous adenoma was identical to a tumor resected 6 months before from this patient's rectal wall.
CONCLUSION: These two tumors behaved benignly, and the vulvar adenoma possibly originated with the müllerian vestige.

A case of primary mucinous carcinoma originating in the renal pelvis associated with renal lithiasis is reported. The left kidney removed was mostly occupied by mucinous carcinoma with areas of signet ring cell carcinoma. The epithelium covering the pelvis consisted of a single layer of columnar epithelium with scattered goblet cells and mucous glands. A series of careful examinations of the abdominal viscera failed to disclose any other primary lesion. The patient died with multiple peritoneal tumor disseminations eight months after the operation despite additional chemotherapy.

A 10-year-old girl with ocular complications of Stevens-Johnson syndrome developed a large superior orbital cyst above the right eye. When the cyst recurred after needle aspiration, it was removed surgically and the superior conjunctival fornix was replaced with a buccal mucous membrane graft. Histopathologically the lesion proved to be a clear cyst lined by nonkeratinizing epithelium compatible with conjunctival epithelium with rare goblet cells. The patient did well postoperatively. An orbital cyst is a rare ocular complication of the Stevens-Johnson syndrome.

It has been tried in this study to produce chronic obstructive bronchitis in dogs by exposing them to high concentrations of SO2. The study was extended to 175 days and during that period the animals were exposed to 300-500 ppm SO2 for a total of 435 h. None of the three dogs developed serious respiratory damage. Most of the symptoms were transitory. Histological examinations showed increased number of goblet cells in trachea, main- and lobar bronchi and a slight alteration of the bronchial glands.
