A Comprehensive Study of Dengue Epidemics and Persistence of Anti-Dengue Virus Antibodies in District Swat, Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: Dengue fever is one of the most common human arbovirus infections worldwide. In Pakistan, dengue initially became endemic in the big cities and then expanded to remote areas of the country. The current study reports the dengue epidemics, anti-DENV antibodies prevalence during the active and post-dengue infection, risk factors, disease symptoms, and spotting dengue infection densities in district Swat of Pakistan. METHODS: Clinical signs and demographic data of dengue suspected individuals were collected at the time of screening through non-structural protein-1 antigen detection te

From pandemics to preparedness: harnessing AI, CRISPR, and synthetic biology to counter biosecurity threats.

Biosecurity threats, which include natural outbreaks, laboratory accidents, and intentional bioterrorism, are a major issue for global health security. The impact of poor preparedness on the health, social, and economic effects of the 1918 influenza pandemic, the 2001 anthrax attacks, and the COVID-19 crisis is devastating. Standard methods, such as quarantine and serology, as well as traditional inoculations, offered basic defences but were often reactive, slow, and unfair. The recent scientific and technological progress has altered the concept of biosecurity preparedness by providing new in

Dissemination of child abuse clinical decision support: Moving beyond a single electronic health record.

BACKGROUND: Child maltreatment is a leading cause of pediatric morbidity and mortality. We previously reported on development and implementation of a child abuse clinical decision support system (CA-CDSS) in the Cerner electronic health record (EHR). Our objective was to develop a CA-CDSS in two different EHRs. METHODS: Using the CA-CDSS in Cerner as a template, CA-CDSSs were developed for use in four hospitals in the Northwell Health system who use Allscripts and two hospitals in the University of Wisconsin health system who use Epic. Each system had a combination of triggers, alerts and chi

Co-learning during the co-creation of a dengue early warning system for the health sector in Barbados.

Over the past decade, the Caribbean region has been challenged by compound climate and health hazards, including tropical storms, extreme heat and droughts and overlapping epidemics of mosquito-borne diseases, including dengue, chikungunya and Zika. Early warning systems (EWS) are a key climate change adaptation strategy for the health sector. An EWS can integrate climate information in forecasting models to predict the risk of disease outbreaks several weeks or months in advance. In this article, we share our experiences of co-learning during the process of co-creating a dengue EWS for the he

Genomic selection for producer-recorded health event data in US dairy cattle.

Emphasizing increased profit through increased dairy cow production has revealed a negative relationship of production with fitness and health traits. Decreased cow health can affect herd profitability through increased rates of involuntary culling and decreased or lost milk sales. The development of genomic selection methodologies, with accompanying substantial gains in reliability for low-heritability traits, may dramatically improve the feasibility of genetic improvement of dairy cow health. Producer-recorded health information may provide a wealth of information for improvement of dairy co

Guiding Principles for Data Architecture to Support the Pathways Community HUB Model.

INTRODUCTION: The Pathways Community HUB Model provides a unique strategy to effectively supplement health care services with social services needed to overcome barriers for those most at risk of poor health outcomes. Pathways are standardized measurement tools used to define and track health and social issues from identification through to a measurable completion point. The HUB use Pathways to coordinate agencies and service providers in the community to eliminate the inefficiencies and duplication that exist among them. Establishing an early warning event management system at Africa CDC.

Africa is home to hotspots of disease emergence and re-emergence. To adequately detect and respond to these health threats, early warning systems inclusive of event-based surveillance (EBS) are needed. However, data systems to manage these events are not readily available. In 2020, Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention developed an event management system (EMS) to meet this need. The district health information software (DHIS2), which is free and open-source software was identified as the platform for the EMS because it can support data capture and analysis and monitor and report e

Animal bite and rabies postexposure prophylaxis reporting--United States, 2013.

CONTEXT: Rabies virus causes a fatal encephalitis and is typically acquired through the bite of an infected mammal. Rabies is preventable through administration of rabies postexposure prophylaxis (PEP), but this must be balanced with the need to avoid unnecessary PEP use. Though not nationally notifiable, some state health departments (SHDs) have made animal bites and use of PEP reportable within their jurisdictions. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated whether animal bites and PEP were reportable to SHDs as of 2013 for every state in the United States. DESIGN: The list of reportable conditions for each

Counting every stillbirth and neonatal death through mortality audit to improve quality of care for every pregnant woman and her baby.

BACKGROUND: While there is widespread acknowledgment of the need for improved quality and quantity of information on births and deaths, there has been less movement towards systematically capturing and reviewing the causes and avoidable factors linked to deaths, in order to affect change. This is particularly true for stillbirths and neonatal deaths which can fall between different health care providers and departments. Maternal and perinatal mortality audit applies to two of the five objectives in the Every Newborn Action Plan but data on successful approaches to overcome bottlenecks to scali

COVID-19 vaccination data management and visualization systems for improved decision-making: Lessons learnt from Africa CDC Saving Lives and Livelihoods program.

The DHIS2 system enabled real-time tracking of vaccine distribution and administration to facilitate data-driven decisions. Experts from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) and Management Information System (MIS) teams, with support from the Health Information Systems Program South Africa (HISP-SA), developed the continental COVID-19 vaccination tracking system. Several variables related to COVID-19 vaccination were considered in developing the system. Three-hundred fifty users can access the system at different levels with specifi…

Economic features of antibiotic resistance: the case of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

This paper analyses and updates the economic information regarding methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), including information that has been previously reviewed by other authors, and new information, for the purpose of facilitating health management and clinical decisions. The analysed articles reveal great disparity in the economic burden on MRSA patients; this is mainly due to the diversity of the designs of the studies, as well as the variability of the patients and the differences in health care systems. Regarding prophylactic strategies, the studies do not provide conclusive

Delivery care utilisation and care-seeking in the neonatal period: a population-based study in Vietnam.

BACKGROUND: If millions of neonatal deaths each year are to be prevented, one crucial component that must be improved is adequate care-seeking behaviour and effective use of existing health care systems. We have investigated these factors in relation to delivery and the neonatal period in a province in Northern Vietnam, a setting currently in socio-economic transition. METHODS: Information on births and neonatal deaths between January and December 2005 in Quang Ninh province was collected. Narratives of the neonatal deaths were gathered and information about care-seeking in relation to delive

COVID-19 Vaccination Coverage and Associated Factors Among Underserved Communities in South Carolina: Results from a Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: The effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines in reducing adverse health outcomes is well-documented. However, vaccine uptake remains suboptimal, particularly among minority populations in the USA. We estimated COVID-19 vaccination coverage and investigated factors associated with vaccination status among adults in underserved communities in South Carolina. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among barbershop and salon clients (n = 330) in six counties from August to November 2023. Data were collected on demographics, health status, vaccination history for COVID-19 and the fl

An EHR-based method to structure, standardize, and automate clinical documentation tasks for pharmacists to generate extractable outcomes.

As the recognition of team-based care grows and pharmacists increase in patient care interventions, it is important that tools to track clinical services are easily accessible and well-integrated into workflow for all providers. We describe and discuss feasibility and implementation of data tools in an electronic health record to evaluate a pragmatic clinical pharmacy intervention focused on deprescribing in aged adults delivered at multiple clinical sites in a large academic health system. Of the data tools utilized, we were able to demonstrate clear documentation frequency of certain phrases

Construction of syndromic surveillance using a web-based daily questionnaire for health and its application at the G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit meeting.

We constructed a syndromic surveillance system to collect directly information on daily health conditions directly from local residents via the internet [web-based daily questionnaire for health surveillance system (WDQH SS)]. This paper considers the feasibility of the WDQH SS and its ability to detect epidemics. A verification study revealed that our system was an effective surveillance system. We then applied an improved WDQH SS as a measure against public health concerns at the G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit meeting in 2008. While in operation at the Summit, our system reported a fever alert th

Rotavirus vaccines--from licensure to disease reduction.

Rotavirus infection produces a serious health burden in the United States, causing an estimated > 100,000 hospitalizations and > 100 deaths annually. This health burden is comparable to that for measles, pertussis, mumps, and varicella before vaccines for these diseases were routinely given to children. Rotavirus vaccines have the potential to significantly reduce a serious public health problem in the United States. However, while development and licensure of vaccines is a major breakthrough, it represents only the first step in disease prevention. Vaccines must be recommended by major immuni

What will introducing and delivering new maternal vaccines cost in Ghana and Mozambique? A prospective analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The maternal vaccine landscape is expanding, including the anticipated global rollout of the now approved respiratory syncytial virus maternal vaccine. Integrating maternal immunization (MI) into health systems in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs) will require adaptation to existing immunization delivery platforms and have cost implications. In this study, we project the cost of maternal vaccine introduction and delivery in Ghana and Mozambique to help inform introduction decisions and ensure financial sustainability of future MI interventions. METHODS: We used an activity

Mortality before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in Manhiça district, Southern Mozambique.

INTRODUCTION: Mozambique reported its first COVID-19 case in March 2020, and the pandemic exposed significant vulnerabilities in its healthcare system. Measuring mortality attributable to COVID-19 in Mozambique, has been challenging due to limitations in health information systems and incomplete death documentation outside health facilities. By mid-2023, a total of 2,234 deaths from 233,334 cases were confirmed but the figures can be much higher.  METHODS : We conducted a trend analysis of mortality using data from the Manhiça Health and Demographic Surveillance System from the periods before …
