Into the unknown: a literature review of helminths of amphibians and reptiles in Mesoamerica.

BACKGROUND: Helminths are an important but understudied component of amphibian and reptile biodiversity, particularly in Mesoamerica, a global biodiversity and cultural hotspot. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive literature review of helminth parasites reported from amphibians and reptiles across Mesoamerica, yielding 71 publications with 1195 specimen records. Data extracted from each article included geographical location of the report, co-author affiliation and country of origin, host and parasite taxonomic details, deposition in taxonomic collections, and pathological data. In addition

Patterns of helminth parasite infections in cyclic common vole (Microtus arvalis) populations.

Research on parasite-induced regulation has identified the conditions under which parasites can destabilise host population dynamics: high levels of aggregation, delayed density-dependence, and moderate negative effects on fitness (reproduction, survival). Gastrointestinal helminths with direct life cycles and a single definitive host provide ideal systems to test these predictions. In this study, we first determined which helminths infect common voles (Microtus arvalis) in NW Spain, where populations are cyclic. We showed that the helminth community is dominated by Syphacia sp., a gut-restric

Integration of deworming into primary healthcare in Western Kenya: a quasi-experimental evaluation.

INTRODUCTION: The WHO 2030 NTD roadmap calls for integrating mass drug administration (MDA) into primary healthcare (PHC) systems. A coverage evaluation survey conducted in Western Kenya exposed the persistent limitations of mass drug administration campaigns, showing that nearly 25% of surveyed individuals never received treatment. The effect of stock-outs and ineffective mobilizations were also noted. To consolidate the gains from previous mass drug administrations (MDAs), integration of MDA into Primary Health Care (PHC) services was piloted through the Deworming Innovation Fund by leveragi

Characterization of the complete mitochondrial genome of Longicollum pagrosomi yamaguti, 1935 (Palaeacanthocephala: Echinorhynchida) in cultured large yellow croaker (Larimichthys crocea) and its phylogenetic implications.

A species of acanthocephalan collected from the hindgut of Larimichthys crocea was identified as Longicollum pagrosomi Yamaguti, 1935 based on morphological characteristics. The complete mitochondrial genome of this parasite was sequenced. The mitogenome exhibited a circular structure with a total length of 14 632 bp, containing 12 protein coding genes (PCGs), 2 ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs), 22 transfer RNAs (tRNAs) and 2 major non-coding regions. The most frequently used start codon was GTG, and the most abundant amino acid was valine. The phylogenetic analyses of the mitogenome using Bayesian infe

Helminth fauna of the monocled cobra (Naja kaouthia) from central Thailand: community composition and taxonomic perspectives.

Snakes serve as important hosts for parasites at the interface of wildlife, humans and domestic animals. However, their helminth fauna in tropical regions, particularly Thailand, remains poorly documented. This study investigates the helminth fauna, community structure, infection patterns and their co-occurrence dynamics in the monocled cobra (Naja kaouthia) from urbanized areas of central Thailand, based on comprehensive analyses of 34 wild-caught individuals. Using integrated morphological and molecular approaches (e.g. mitochondrial 16S rRNA and COI gene sequencing), 11 helminth species wer

RELMβ in intestinal helminth infection: Mechanisms and research advances.

Intestinal helminth infections remain a major global public health challenge, affecting both human and animal health. The immune mechanisms by which hosts resist and expel helminths are multifaceted, with intestinal epithelial cells and their secretory products playing pivotal roles. Resistin-like molecule β (RELMβ), also known as Found in Inflammatory Zone 2 (FIZZ2), is a secreted protein predominantly produced by intestinal goblet cells. Recent studies have revealed that RELMβ exerts important functions in intestinal inflammation and immune regulation, particularly in type 2 immunity-driven

Spatial modeling of soil-transmitted helminthiases in Colombia under climate change scenarios.

INTRODUCTION: Soil-transmitted helminthiases remain a significant public health burden in Colombia, especially in rural and tropical areas. Climate change is expected to alter environmental conditions that favor the survival and transmission of Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, and hookworms. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the current spatial distribution of these infections and project prevalence changes by 2035 under climate change scenarios, with and without public health interventions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An ecological study with spatial modeling was conducted, integrating epidemiolo

Helminth Prevalence in European Deer with a Focus on Abomasal Nematodes and the Influence of Livestock Pasture Contact: A Meta-Analysis.

Deer are susceptible to infection with parasitic helminths, including species which are of increasing economic concern to the livestock industry due to anthelmintic drug resistance. This paper systematically collates helminth prevalence data from deer across Europe and explores patterns in relation to host and parasite species, as well as landscape factors. A livestock pasture contact index (LPCI) is developed to predict epidemiological overlap between deer and livestock, and hence to examine deer helminth fauna in the context of their surrounding environment. Fifty-eight studies comprising fa

Exploring extracellular vesicles in zoonotic helminth biology: implications for diagnosis, therapeutic and delivery.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) have emerged as key intercellular communication and pathogenesis mediators. Parasitic organisms' helminths, cause widespread infections with significant health impacts worldwide. Recent research has shed light on the role of EVs in the lifecycle, immune evasion, and disease progression of these parasitic organisms. These tiny membrane-bound organelles including microvesicles and exosomes, facilitate the transfer of proteins, lipids, mRNAs, and microRNAs between cells. EVs have been isolated from various bodily fluids, offering a potential diagnostic and therapeutic

Universal versus taxon-specific drivers of helminth prevalence and intensity of infection.

Two key epidemiological parameters, prevalence and mean intensity of infection, together capture the abundance of macroparasite populations, the strength of density-dependent effects they experience, their potential impact on host population dynamics and the selective pressures they exert on their hosts. Yet, the drivers of the extensive variation observed in prevalence and mean intensity of infection, even among related parasite taxa infecting related hosts, remain mostly unknown. We performed phylogenetically grounded Bayesian modelling across hundreds of amphibian populations to test the ef

New records of endoparasites and ectoparasites in free-living road-killed wild animals in the Pampa biome, Southern Brazil.

Wild animals host a wide variety of parasites, and the disorders caused by these parasites are among the most prevalent and significant infectious diseases affecting wildlife. The investigation of parasitic fauna is crucial for the conservation of wild animals, domestic populations, and humans. Therefore, the aim of the study was to survey endo- and ectoparasites in free-living wildlife in southern Brazil. Carcasses of road-killed wildlife were collected from highways in the Pelotas microregion, Rio Grande do Sul. All carcasses were necropsied, and endo- and ectoparasites were collected and id

Helminth parasites of the invasive European brown hare (Lepus europaeus) in Brazil: the first report of Bunostomum trigonocephalum in a hare.

Invasive alien species have the potential to introduce pathogens of economic and health importance in new environments. In Brazil, parasites from the non-native European brown hare can be a threat to humans, domestic animals, and wildlife. Therefore, we aimed to describe the helminth fauna of the invasive European brown hare in three Brazilian states (São Paulo, Paraná, and Rio Grande do Sul). For this, 90 brown hares were collected and examined for helminths. Helminth specimens recovered were morphologically identified and genetically characterized based on the DNA of male specimens using thr

Horse and donkey parasitology: differences and analogies for a correct diagnostic and management of major helminth infections.

In June 2022, at the XXXII Conference of the Italian Society of Parasitology, the parallels of the main endoparasitic infections of horses and donkeys were discussed. Although these 2 species are genetically different, they can be challenged by a similar range of parasites (i.e. small and large strongyles, and Parascaris spp.). Although equids can demonstrate some level of resilience to parasites, they have quite distinct helminth biodiversity, distribution and intensity among different geographical locations and breeds. Heavily infected donkeys may show fewer clinical signs than horses. Altho

Cooperation of ILC2s and TH2 cells in the expulsion of intestinal helminth parasites.

Type 2 immune responses form a critical defence against enteric worm infections. In recent years, mouse models have revealed shared and unique functions for group 2 innate lymphoid cells and T helper 2 cells in type 2 immune response to intestinal helminths. Both cell types use similar innate effector functions at the site of infection, whereas each population has distinct roles during different stages of infection. In this Perspective, we review the underlying mechanisms used by group 2 innate lymphoid cells and T helper 2 cells to cooperate with each other and suggest an overarching model of
