BACKGROUND: Complete proximal avulsions of the hamstring muscle group may cause significant morbidity and loss of function. These pelvis-near musculoskeletal injuries are mostly acquired during sports activities in a hip flexion and knee extension. Here we present a study group of 6 middle-aged to elderly patients suffering a complete proximal hamstring avulsion and following early surgical refixation. Early surgical refixation leads to complete resumption of the activities of daily life without loss of function.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The 6 patients (3 men and 3 women) included in this study

Hip fracture in patients under age 50 is rare, and is often not attributable solely to the energy of injury. Our aim was to determine if trabecular bone mineral density (BMD) is abnormal in young patients with hip fractures. We reviewed all hip fractures treated at our institution between 1979 and 1986 and contacted 20 patients under the age of 50 at the time of injury, all of whom wished to be studied. The mean age at the time of injury was 39 (range 24-47). Subjects were questioned for osteoporosis risk factors, classified by level of energy producing their injury, and then underwent quantit

It is estimated that 30 million children in the US participate in organised sports programmes. As more and more children participate in sports and recreational activities, there has been an increase in acute and overuse injuries. Emergency department visits are highest among the school-age to young adult population. Over one-third of school-age children will sustain an injury severe enough to be treated by a doctor or nurse. The yearly costs have been estimated to be as high as 1.8 billion US dollars. There are physical and physiological differences between children and adults that may cause c

Bone stress injuries are well-documented injury patterns among U.S. Armed Forces recruits because of the rapid increase in frequency and intensity of bone-impacting activities throughout training. In the recruit population, femoral neck stress fractures are of great concern because of their propensity to progress, displace, and lead to lifelong complications like avascular necrosis. We present two cases of bilateral operative femoral neck stress fractures. The first is of a 28-year-old male Marine Corps recruit who experienced bilateral groin pain during the first week of training. He was foun

Fatal falls are frequent and seem to be an increasing problem in the elderly. Especially ground level falls (GLFs) and falls on or from stairs and steps (stairs falls) are worth examining for forensic classification and in order to improve the development of preventive measures. We retrospectively analyzed 261 fatal falls of elderly age 65 + years, which were autopsied at the Institute of Legal Medicine in Munich between 2008 and 2014. After careful screening, the sub-set of all 77 GLFs and 39 stairs falls were analyzed towards socio-demographic characteristics, fall circumstances, injuries, a

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the feasibility of feline diagnostic coxofemoral arthroscopy.
STUDY DESIGN: Ex vivo feline cadaveric descriptive study.
ANIMALS: Seven feline cadavers (14 hips).
METHODS: Gross dissection of two feline hips was performed to evaluate anatomic landmarks, guide arthroscopic portal development, and determine optimal limb positioning. A 1.9 mm, 0° arthroscope, inserted through a supratrochanteric lateral portal, was used to assess intraarticular structures in 12 feline cadaver hips. Arthroscopy was followed by gross dissection of periarticular soft tissues. Relative portal

Hip pain and loss of motion in young adults with previous Legg-Calve-Perthes-Disease may be caused by anterior femoro-acetabular impingement. Eleven patients (12 hips) with the chief complaint of groin pain and significant proximal femoral deformity were treated. Gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance arthrography in ten patients indicated labral injury and adjacent acetabular cartilage lesions in nine hips. A surgical dislocation of each hip confirmed that there was impingement induced intra-articular injury consistent with the pathology indicated on the MRI. Reshaping of the femoral head, wi

Pediatric hip fractures are uncommon injuries but are associated with a high complication rate including avascular necrosis, coxa vara, nonunion, and premature physeal arrest. This is due in part to the unique anatomy of the proximal femur. Management principles are aimed at minimizing the risk of complications and emphasize the importance of early treatment with anatomic reduction and stable internal fixation with a low threshold for supplementing fixation with a spica cast. The age of the patient and Delbet fracture type dictate the optimal type of fixation for a given case. This article wil

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Ice hockey is a fast-paced sport played by an increasing number of children and teens across the nation.
RECENT FINDINGS: The risk of injury in youth hockey is high due to contact from body checking. Youth hockey programs need to educate players, coaches, and parents about the importance of knowing and following the rules as well as the dangers of body checking another player from behind.
SUMMARY: In this article, we will present an overview of the types and rates of injuries that occur in ice hockey and then present a detailed review of hip/groin injuries that are commonl

Displaced acetabular fractures are serious injuries often resulting in permanent disability. Fifty-five patients with fifty-six such injuries seen at the Campbell Clinic between 1927 and 1970 had either central dislocation with or without fracture of the weightbearing dome, or acetabular disruption usually associated with posterior displacement of the hip. After an average follow-up of 8.6 years, 56 per cent of those treated without surgery had good or satisfactory results compared with 54 per cent good or satisfactory results in those treated surgically. Patients with displaced fractures of t

Stress fractures and reactions of the pubic ramus, pubic symphsitis, gracilis syndrome, pelvic avulsion injuries, femoral stress fractures, degenerative osteoarthritis, discogenic pain, and spondylolysis are among the multiple conditions causing groin pain in the athlete. These conditions occasionally have uncertain etiologies and are contributed to by poor training techniques and ill-repaired running shoes, combined with minor congenital anomalies that may have been silent prior to the demands of athletic competition. Roentgen documentation of the specific injury enables early appropriate tre

Although adhesive capsulitis of the shoulder is a common clinical syndrome, adhesive capsulitis in other joints has rarely been reported. Four patients who developed adhesive capsulitis of the hip joint after trauma and two patients with adhesive capsulitis of the ankle, also precipitated by trauma, are described. The diagnosis of adhesive capsulitis is easily made during arthrography when a joint of low volume and high intracapsular pressure is encountered.

BACKGROUND: Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) is becoming a prevalent overuse injury diagnosis among hockey players. In the adult ice hockey stride, the "at-risk" hip position, defined by internal rotation during flexion and external rotation during abduction, reportedly increases hip vulnerability to labral injury as a result of FAI.
HYPOTHESIS: Peewee youth ice hockey players display the kinematics for both described at-risk hip positions (internal rotation during flexion and external rotation during abduction) in the ice hockey sprint start.
STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive laboratory study.

Simultaneous bilateral posterior dislocation of the hip is very uncommon and most cases are caused by road accidents. Simultaneous bilateral posterior dislocation of the hip due to convulsions is extremely rare. We report the case of a man who was diagnosed late and operated on 15 weeks after the injury. We discuss the treatment of chronic dislocation of the hip and review the literature.

From 1973-1977, 21 retroperitoneal vascular injuries were seen at the Medical School of Hannover. Vascular lesions of polytraumatized patients were treated 12 times. The rest were iatrogenic traumas after laminectomy, herniotomy, and hip replacement as well as after urologic and gynecologic operations. The overall mortality was 43%. Surgical treatment of the different vascular regions is discussed.
