Integration of mental health screening in the management of patients with temporomandibular disorders.

Mental health disorders such as depression or anxiety, or both, are more common in patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) (16%-40%) than in the general population (16%), and failure to recognise them may be detrimental to the management of TMD. Paper-based screening tools previously reported in this group require assessment by clinicians and subsequent collation of data. We describe our experience of a new system - IMPARTS (Integrating mental and physical: research training and services), which uses validated tools to identify and to monitor the progress of patients who may benefit fr

Collaborative care intervention for the perceived care needs of women with breast cancer undergoing adjuvant therapy after surgery: a feasibility study.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the feasibility of an intervention program for women with breast cancer undergoing adjuvant anticancer therapy, and determine its preliminary effectiveness in reducing their unmet needs and psychological distress. METHODS: The intervention was based on the collaborative care model, and compromised four domains: identification of unmet needs, problem-solving therapy and behavioral activation supervised by a psychiatrist, psychoeducation and referral to relevant departments. Eligible women with breast cancer were provided the collaborative care interve

The Effect of Child Sexual Abuse on Men: Toward a Male Sensitive Measure.

Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a trauma that affects males in substantial numbers, sometimes in ways that are gender-specific (e.g., compromised masculine identity, confusion regarding sexuality). Much of the identification of the male-specific outcomes has been derived from practitioner experience and small qualitative studies. The current study explores gender-specific outcomes and describes the development of a scale to measure the effects of CSA on men. First, qualitative interviews with 20 men who were sexually abused in childhood were thematically analyzed. The emergent themes of sexuality,

Burning mouth syndrome: a review and update.

Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is characterized by the presence of burning sensation of the oral mucosa in the absence of clinically apparent mucosal alterations. It occurs more commonly in middle-aged and elderly women and often affects the tongue tip and lateral borders, lips, and hard and soft palate. In addition to a burning sensation, the patients with BMS may also complain unremitting oral mucosal pain, dysgeusia, and xerostomia. BMS can be classified into two clinical forms: primary and secondary BMS. The primary BMS is essential or idiopathic, in which the organic local/systemic causes c

Sequelae of Venezuelan equine encephalitis in humans: a four year follow-up.

The purpose of this study was the identification of possible sequelae of the infection of human individuals with Virus of Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis (VEE). Special emphasis was laid on exploring neurological, psychological and behavioural aspects and particularly on the search for a possible association of the disease with epileptic phenomena, brain damage and/or mental deficiency. A four-year period of observation was conducted on a sample of children from El Carmelo (Colombia) where an epidemic of VEE took place in 1967. A group of seven children who presented the encephalitic type of th

Developing a behavior rating scale for comparing teachers' ratings of children with and without craniofacial anomalies.

OBJECTIVE: Published psychometric tools are often insensitive to the experience of children with craniofacial anomalies (CFAs). The purposes of this study were to develop a valid and reliable assessment of behavior among children with and without CFAs and to compare teacher ratings of these two groups of children. METHODS: Teachers were asked prospectively to assess social competence and peer acceptance among 99 consecutively evaluated school-aged patients with CFAs and 99 "controls" (classmates without CFA matched by race, gender, intellectual status, general socioeconomic status, and grade)

Association between eating disorders and functional gastrointestinal disorders: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) and eating disorders (EDs) frequently coexist with one another. It is not unusual for a patient to present with both diseases because they share many similarities with reference to the deeper psychological factors and the connection between the gastrointestinal tract and the brain. Many studies have shown that while the occurrence of FGID in eating disorder patients is noteworthy, it varies greatly, mostly due to disparate research approaches. This review aims to synthesize 2015-2025 evidence on ED-FGID associations, prevalence patter

Preoperative anxiety, sleep disturbances and postoperative delirium in cardiac surgery: A scoping review for nursing practice.

Preoperative anxiety, sleep disturbances and postoperative delirium are common complications among patients undergoing cardiac surgery and are associated with adverse perioperative outcomes. This scoping review aimed to synthesise evidence on the relationship between these factors and identify implications for perianaesthesia nursing practice. A literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science for studies published between 2016 and 2026. Twenty-five studies met the inclusion criteria. The findings indicated that preoperative anxiety and poor sleep quality were consistently

Sepsis and the brain: a review for acute and general physicians.

Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) describes acute cognitive dysfunction secondary to systemic or peripheral infection occurring outside of the central nervous system (CNS). Symptoms can range from mild confusion to coma and may precede the clinical signs of sepsis. Recognition that SAE is a potential differential diagnosis in patients presenting with delirium is important, as SAE is a diagnosis of exclusion. Physicians should also be aware that severe SAE is associated with a high mortality. Although mortality is often secondary to multiorgan failure rather than neurological sequelae, lon

International consensus recommendations for the identification and treatment of tuberous sclerosis complex-associated neuropsychiatric disorders (TAND).

BACKGROUND: Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is associated with a wide range of physical manifestations for which international clinical recommendations for diagnosis and management have been established. TSC is, however, also associated with a wide range of TSC-Associated Neuropsychiatric Disorders (TAND) that are typically under-identified and under-treated yet associated with a profound burden of disease. The contemporary evidence base for the identification and treatment of TAND is much more limited and, to date, consensus recommendations for the diagnosis and management of TAND have also

Turkish nurses' earthquake management model: a qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: The 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes were among the most catastrophic disasters in Türkiye’s history, affecting over 13 million people and causing massive casualties and infrastructure devastation. Nurses play a critical role in all phases of disaster management, yet no standardized, nurse-specific framework exists to guide their practice. This study aims to explore the challenges nurses encounter in earthquake management and to develop a comprehensive, nurse-specific earthquake management model based on their field experiences. METHODS: This qualitative study employed semi-structu

[Personality tests and gender identification in male transsexuals].

The aim of this research project was to study gender identification in male transsexuals compared to male and female controls, using the Rorschach test and the MMPI. In the international literature, many researches have shown that the nature of the human response on Rorschach card III is linked to gender identification, as is the MMPI Mf scale. Ten untreated male homosexual transsexuals and 18 treated and operated male homosexual transsexuals were compared to 10 male and 12 female controls regarding verbal IQ, human content on Rorschach card III and the MMPI Mf scale. Absence of hormonal treat

Building a Machine Learning Prediction Model for Postpartum Depression Based on Ensemble Learning Strategies.

AIMS/BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common perinatal mental health disorder that leads to adverse maternal and infant outcomes. Existing screening strategies rely on self-reported symptom presence, potentially delaying early identification. This study aims to integrate biological, psychological, and social predictive factors using an ensemble learning (EL) strategy to develop a superior early prediction machine learning (ML) model for PPD. METHODS: By integrating sociodemographic characteristics, clinical baseline data, and psychological test results of 1323 postpartum women, PP

Recommendations on Sexuality and Intimacy After Burn Injuries.

BACKGROUND: Burn injuries profoundly impact the survivors' physical, psychological and social well-being, with sexuality, intimacy and body image remaining among the most disrupted yet least addressed areas of rehabilitation. Limited professional training, social discomfort, and a lack of clinical guidance contribute to these unmet needs. Recognizing sexuality as an essential part of health, this interdisciplinary project developed evidence-informed recommendations and communication tools to support both burn survivors and healthcare professionals in discussing intimacy, sexuality, and body im

Chronic stress, cortisol dysregulation, and neurodegenerative vulnerability: mechanistic pathways linking HPA-axis dysfunction to Alzheimer's disease risk.

Chronic psychological stress is increasingly recognized as a silent risk factor of long-term brain vulnerability and a potential modifier of neurodegenerative disease trajectories. The persistent activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and the consequent dysregulation of cortisol exert extensive influences on neural, immune, and metabolic pathways linked to cognitive decline and dementia. This review synthesizes current mechanistic and clinical evidence concerning the effects of chronic stress-induced HPA-axis dysfunction on neurodegenerative susceptibility and Alzheimer's
