Phobic postural vertigo. Body sway during visually induced roll vection.

Patients with phobic postural vertigo (PPV) often report a particularly increased unsteadiness when looking at moving visual scenes. Therefore, the differential effects of large-field visual motion stimulation in roll plane on body sway during upright stance were analyzed in 23 patients with PPV, who had been selected for the integrity of their vestibular and balance systems, and in 17 healthy subjects. Visual motion stimulation induced a sensation of apparent body motion (roll vection) in all patients and normal subjects. Normal subjects showed an increased lateral sway path with a lateral sh

Pulfrich's phenomenon in unilateral cataract.

AIMS: To determine whether unilateral cataract causes a pathological Pulfrich's phenomenon. METHODS: 29 subjects with unilateral cataract and contralateral pseudophakia were assessed on their ability to perceive the Pulfrich phenomenon. Using a computer generated pendulum image, and graded neutral density filters, a series of forced choice trials were performed in which the subject was required to describe the direction of any apparent pendulum rotation. A pathological Pulfrich effect was said to occur when apparent rotation was perceived in the presence of a zero strength neutral density fil

Environmental drivers of vertigo.

BACKGROUND: Vertigo is characterized by the illusion of motion, typically described as a spinning sensation. Seasonal variations in vertigo incidence, particularly in Meniere's disease and Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, have been reported, though underlying mechanisms remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study investigates key environmental drivers by analyzing seasonal patterns of vertigo while accounting for temperature, barometric pressure, humidity, and viral infections in Israel's semi-arid Negev desert. We hypothesized that environmental conditions are associated with the onset of ver

Etomidate vaping: A new form of anesthetic abuse.

Background: The emergence of etomidate-containing e-cigarettes represents a significant and rapidly evolving public health challenge, marking a transition of this clinical anesthetic into illegal use of an anesthetic agent. Originally utilized as a short-acting intravenous anesthetic for intubation induction, etomidate's high lipophilicity allows it to be easily aerosolized for inhalation via vaping devices. Misuse is primarily driven by its rapid-onset effects, including relaxation, dissociation, and transient euphoria, as well as a pervasive "illusion of safety" among users who perceive hosp

The influence of striped clothing on visual body perception: A study on pattern spacing design.

The slimming effect of striped clothing has long been a research topic in the field of visual perception. Some studies have supported the Helmholtz illusion, which suggests that clothing with horizontal lines makes a person appear thinner than clothing with vertical lines. However, other studies argued that these experiments lacked ecological validity, as it seemed unlikely that stimuli with vertical and horizontal stripes were present concurrently. Therefore, perceptual anchoring should be incorporated into the experimental procedure. While previous studies used only pencil stripes as the res

Motor and Sensory Benefits of Mirror Therapy in Children and Adolescents with Unilateral Cerebral Palsy: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background: Mirror therapy (MT) creates a cerebral illusion of a normal movement in a paretic limb. Although mirror therapy has been studied as a suitable intervention for children with Unilateral Cerebral Palsy (UCP), a comprehensive understanding of its full range of benefits is still lacking. Thus, the aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to determine all motor and sensory effects of MT in children and adolescents with UCP. Methods: Clinical trials focused on the application of MT in the upper limb (UL) of children and adolescents with UCP were included. A search was performe

Quantifying the Impact of Spatial Disorientation on Pilot Mental Workload and Attentional Focus.

ObjectiveWe aimed to find objective measures of the impact of spatially disorienting (SD) stimuli on pilot cognition in an ecologically valid environment.BackgroundSD frequently occurs in military rotary-wing operations and often contributes to mishaps. Effects of SD stimuli on pilots are usually quantified using control errors, but effects on cognition have not yet been successfully quantified.MethodMilitary helicopter pilots (n = 14) performed scenarios with six SD stimuli (SD condition) and six corresponding control stimuli (NoSD condition) in a motion-base simulator with integrated virtual

Identifying EEG biomarkers of sense of embodiment in virtual reality: insights from spatio-spectral features.

The Sense of Embodiment (SoE) refers to the subjective experience of perceiving a non-biological body part as one's own. Virtual Reality (VR) provides a powerful platform to manipulate SoE, making it a crucial factor in immersive human-computer interaction. This becomes particularly relevant in Electroencephalography (EEG)-based Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs), especially motor imagery (MI)-BCIs, which harness brain activity to enable users to control virtual avatars in a self-paced manner. In such systems, a strong SoE can significantly enhance user engagement, control accuracy, and the over

Event-Related EEG Desynchronization Reveals Enhanced Motor Imagery From the Third Person Perspective by Manipulating Sense of Body Ownership With Virtual Reality for Stroke Patients.

Virtual reality (VR)-based rehabilitation training holds great potential for post-stroke motor recovery. Existing VR-based motor imagery (MI) paradigms mostly focus on the first-person perspective, and the benefit of the third-person perspective (3PP) remains to be further exploited. The 3PP is advantageous for movements involving the back or those with a large range because of its field coverage. Some movements are easier to imagine from the 3PP. However, the 3PP training efficiency may be unsatisfactory, which may be attributed to the difficulty encountered when generating a strong sense of

Delving into the relationship between regular physical exercise and cardiac interoception in two cross-sectional studies.

Cardiac interoception, the ability to sense and process cardiac afferent signals, has been shown to improve after a single session of acute physical exercise. However, it remains unclear whether repetitive engagement in physical exercise over time leads to long-term changes in cardiac interoceptive accuracy. It is also unknown whether those changes affect the neural activity associated with the processing of afferent cardiac signals, assessed by the heart-evoked potential (HEP). In this study, we aimed to investigate this hypothesis through two cross-sectional studies, categorizing participant

Proximal auditory AR rehabilitation: system integration and wellness applications-from hearing support up toward vestibular rehabilitation.

We present a new rehabilitation system based on novel principles, which consists of an auditory augmented reality (AR) headset we originated. The auditory AR headset, which does not cover both ears, allows users to hear both Real and Virtual environmental sounds at the same time. It can also be used in combination with Hearing Aids. We have studied a system to support hearing-impaired people and conducted a test evaluation. The system was able to provide convenience akin to "reading glasses for sound" to those who had mild hearing disabilities. Furthermore, by combining the system with surroun

Unlocking the potential of lumateperone and novel anti-psychotics for schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is a devastating chronic mental health illness which includes a complex set of symptoms like hallucination, illusion and delusion, and to manage, lifelong antipsychotic medications are needed. Schizophrenia affects 1% of the population worldwide, and to date, two different classes of antipsychotics, i.e., typical and atypical antipsychotics, are available in the market, and there is an urgent need for promising antipsychotic drugs. In this review, we focus on recently approved antipsychotics and then focus on different antipsychotic drugs under clinical trials. In this review, we

Venomous Peptides: Molecular Origin of the Toxicity of Snake Venom PLA2-like Peptides.

Snakebite envenoming claims 81-138 thousand lives annually, with vipers responsible for many of those. Phospholipase A2 (PLA2) enzymes and PLA2-like proteins are among the most important viper venom toxins. The latter are particularly intriguing, as three decades after their discovery, their molecular mechanism of toxicity is still poorly understood at best. PLA2-like proteins destabilize eukaryotic cell membranes through an unknown mechanism, causing an uncontrolled influx of Ca2+ ions and ultimately triggering cell death. It is now clear that the C-terminal segment is fundamental to the toxi

Reproductive coercion and abuse in intimate relationships: Women's perceptions of perpetrator motivations.

Reproductive coercion and abuse is a hidden and poorly recognised form of violence against women. It refers broadly to behaviours that interfere with or undermine a person's reproductive autonomy, specifically to promote or prevent pregnancy. Reproductive coercion and abuse can involve physical, sexual, financial or psychological abuse in order to achieve these aims, and is overwhelmingly perpetrated by men against women. As an emerging field of scholarship, conceptual understanding of reproductive coercion and abuse is still in its infancy; however, it is often described as being linked to co

Intentional Head-Motion Assisted Locomotion for Reducing Cybersickness.

We present an efficient locomotion technique that can reduce cybersickness through aligning the visual and vestibular induced self-motion illusion. Our locomotion technique stimulates proprioception consistent with the visual sense by intentional head motion, which includes both the head's translational movement and yaw rotation. A locomotion event is triggered by the hand-held controller together with an intended physical head motion simultaneously. Based on our method, we further explore the connections between the level of cybersickness and the velocity of self motion through a series of ex

A large-scale prospective study of big wins and their relationship with future financial and time involvement in actual daily fantasy sports contests.

OBJECTIVE: Early big wins might have a psychological impact upon gamblers that increases their likelihood of intemperate gambling; however, there has been a paucity of empirical research examining this effect using actual gambling data. METHOD: We assessed the effects of daily fantasy sports (DFS) big wins on subsequent play by analyzing a prospective dataset from a major DFS provider (N = 34,596 DFS subscribers) representing over 18 million entries into DFS contests. RESULTS: We found that experiencing a big win in DFS is associated with subsequently increased DFS engagement (i.e., increase

Clinical Features and Management of Drop Attacks in Menière's Disease. Special Emphasis on the Possible Occurrence of Vertigo After the Drop Attacks.

INTRODUCTION: Tumarkin first described drop attacks (DA) in patients with a peripheral vestibular syndrome and speculated the role of a mechanical deformation of the otolith organs. We emphasized on the possible occurrence of vertigo/dizziness after a DA. In the light of the oculomotor examination of one patient right after the DA, we discussed on the mechanisms. We also described the management of DA. MATERIAL AND METHOD: This study included patients with definite Menire's disease (MD) and at least one DA without associated neurological symptoms. Patients with vertigo/dizziness after the fa

'Self-collected upper respiratory tract swabs for COVID-19 test': A feasible way to increase overall testing rate and conserve resources in South Africa.

Disparity in the testing rate of SARS-CoV-2 amongst different countries and regions is a very big challenge in understanding the COVID-19 pandemic. Although some developed countries have a very high testing rate and subsequently a high number of confirmed cases, less developed countries have a low testing rate and an illusive positivity rate. Collection of the upper respiratory specimen is not often comfortable. The discomfort could be accompanied with epistaxis and headache in some patients. The trained personnel taking the swab is forced to protect self with personal protective equipment (PP
