Quantifying features from X-ray images to assess early stage knee osteoarthritis.

Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a progressive degenerative joint disease and a leading cause of disability worldwide. Manual diagnosis of KOA from X-ray images is subjective and prone to inter- and intra-observer variability, making early detection challenging. While deep learning (DL)-based models offer automation, they often require large labeled datasets, lack interpretability, and do not provide quantitative feature measurements. Our study presents an automated KOA severity assessment system that integrates a pretrained DL model with image processing techniques to extract and quantify key KOA

Localization of interictal discharge origin: A simultaneous intracranial electroencephalographic-functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

OBJECTIVE: Scalp electroencephalographic (EEG)-functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies suggest that the maximum blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) response to an interictal epileptiform discharge (IED) identifies the area of IED generation. However, the maximum BOLD response has also been reported in distant, seemingly irrelevant areas. Given the poor postoperative outcomes associated with extra-temporal lobe epilepsy, we hypothesized this finding is more common when analyzing extratemporal IEDs as compared to temporal IEDs. We further hypothesized that a subjective, holistic ass

Classification of follicular lymphoma images: a holistic approach with symbol-based machine learning methods.

It is not very often to see a symbol-based machine learning approach to be used for the purpose of image classification and recognition. In this paper we will present such an approach, which we first used on the follicular lymphoma images. Lymphoma is a broad term encompassing a variety of cancers of the lymphatic system. Lymphoma is differentiated by the type of cell that multiplies and how the cancer presents itself. It is very important to get an exact diagnosis regarding lymphoma and to determine the treatments that will be most effective for the patient's condition. Our work was focused o

Optimization of factor analysis of the left ventricle in echocardiography for detecting wall motion abnormalities.

This study has tested solutions to optimize the ability of factor analysis of the left ventricle in echocardiography (FALVE) to detect segmental wall motion abnormalities automatically. On four- and two-chamber views of 38 patients, two factors (one flat curve and one curve describing the contraction-relaxation sequence) were extracted and associated factor images were combined to synthesize a parametric image (constant image in green, positive/negative values of the contraction-relaxation image in red/blue). The segments were graded on the visual and the parametric views. The impact of select

AI-augmented reconstruction provides improved image quality and enables shorter breath-holds in contrast-enhanced liver MRI.

BACKGROUND: To compare liver image quality and lesion detection using an AI-augmented T1-weighted sequence on hepatobiliary-phase gadoxetate-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODS: Fifty patients undergoing gadoxetate-enhanced MRI were recruited. Two T1-weighted Dixon sequences were utilized: a 17-s breath-hold acquisition and an accelerated 12-s breath-hold acquisition (reduced phase resolution), both reconstructed using neural network (NN) and iterative denoising (ID), NN-alone, ID-alone, and the standard method. Contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) was assessed quantitatively for all

Advances in real-time phase-contrast flow MRI using asymmetric radial gradient echoes.

PURPOSE: To provide multidimensional velocity compensation for real-time phase-contrast flow MRI. METHODS: The proposed method introduces asymmetric gradient echoes for highly undersampled radial FLASH MRI with phase-sensitive image reconstruction by regularized nonlinear inversion (NLINV). Using an adapted gradient delay correction the resulting image quality was analyzed by simulations and experimentally validated at 3 Tesla. For real-time flow MRI the reduced gradient-echo timing allowed for the incorporation of velocity-compensating waveforms for all imaging gradients at even shorter repe

Assessing atrophy measurement techniques in dementia: Results from the MIRIAD atrophy challenge.

Structural MRI is widely used for investigating brain atrophy in many neurodegenerative disorders, with several research groups developing and publishing techniques to provide quantitative assessments of this longitudinal change. Often techniques are compared through computation of required sample size estimates for future clinical trials. However interpretation of such comparisons is rendered complex because, despite using the same publicly available cohorts, the various techniques have been assessed with different data exclusions and different statistical analysis models. We created the MIRI

Stochastic decomposition method for detection of epithelium dysplasia and inflammation using white light spectroscopy imaging.

In this paper, we present a stochastic decomposition method (SDM) that allows the detection of dysplasia in epithelial tissue using white-light spectroscopy imaging. The main goal is to extract the data from the decomposition which will lead to the construction of a feature parameter space corresponding to changes in the tissue morphology related to formation of dysplasia and inflammation. These parameters include the number and mean energy of coherent scatterers; deviation from Rayleigh scattering; residual error variance of the diffuse component; and normalized correlation coefficient. The t

Airflow and temperature distribution inside the maxillary sinus: a computational fluid dynamics simulation.

CONCLUSION: The airflow velocity and flux in maxillary sinuses were much lower than those in the nasal cavity, and the temperature in maxillary sinuses was much higher than the temperature in the middle meatus. With the increase of maximum diameter of the ostium, the above indices changed little. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the paper was to investigate, first, the flow and temperature distribution inside normal maxillary sinus in inspiration, and second, flow and temperature alteration with the increase of maximum ostium diameter. METHODS: Three-dimensional models with nasal cavities and bila

Synthesis methods of multiple phase-cycled SSFP images to reduce the band artifact and noise more reliably.

The band artifact in steady-state free precession can be reduced by synthesizing the multiple images obtained through different phase increments of successive radiofrequency pulses. Even though the complex summation method was reported to be effective in reducing the band artifact, it has the pitfalls of intensity abnormality and sensitivity to the phase abnormality. Two new methods have been developed for more reliable reduction of the band artifact than the complex summation method. One method is to sum the complex images partially and to take the maximum intensity of the partially summed im

GRASPNET: Fast spatiotemporal deep learning reconstruction of golden-angle radial data for free-breathing dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging.

The purpose of the current study was to develop a deep learning technique called Golden-angle RAdial Sparse Parallel Network (GRASPnet) for fast reconstruction of dynamic contrast-enhanced 4D MRI acquired with golden-angle radial k-space trajectories. GRASPnet operates in the image-time space and does not use explicit data consistency to minimize the reconstruction time. Three different network architectures were developed: (1) GRASPnet-2D: 2D convolutional kernels (x,y) and coil and contrast dimensions collapsed into a single combined dimension; (2) GRASPnet-3D: 3D kernels (x,y,t); and (3) GR

CSD-GCN: Cross-Modal Self-Distillation Graph Convolutional Network for Alzheimer's Disease Diagnosis.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a prevalent neurodegenerative disorder that demands more comprehensive and precise modeling to unravel its complex pathological mechanisms and multidimensional brain network abnormalities. However, current brain network analysis approaches often suffer from limitations such as single-modal data processing and shallow fusion strategies, which hinder their ability to capture the multi-scale connectivity patterns associated with AD effectively. To alleviate these limitations, a novel multi-modal fusion framework is proposed in this paper, namely a cross-modal self-dist

Privacy-preserving multimodal fusion for Alzheimer's staging: A federated vision transformer framework with explainable AI.

Accurate, early-stage staging of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is critical for therapeutic intervention but is hampered by data privacy regulations, multimodal data heterogeneity, and the "black-box" nature of complex Artificial Intelligence (AI) models. To address these interconnected challenges, we introduce a novel, privacy-preserving federated learning framework for robust and interpretable AD staging. Our method integrates four clinically relevant modalities, 3D structural Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Image Biomarker Standardization Initiative (IBSI)-compliant radiomics, cognitive assessm

Prediction of Lymph Node Metastasis in Colorectal Cancer Using Intraoperative Fluorescence Multi-Modal Imaging.

The diagnosis of lymph node metastasis (LNM) is essential for colorectal cancer (CRC) treatment. The primary method of identifying LNM is to perform frozen sections and pathologic analysis, but this method is labor-intensive and time-consuming. Therefore, combining intraoperative fluorescence imaging with deep learning (DL) methods can improve efficiency. The majority of recent studies only analyze uni-modal fluorescence imaging, which provides less semantic information. In this work, we mainly established a multi-modal fluorescence imaging feature fusion prediction (MFI-FFP) model combining w

Single NMR image super-resolution based on extreme learning machine.

INTRODUCTION: The performance limitation of MRI equipment and higher resolution demand of NMR images from radiologists have formed a strong contrast. Therefore, it is important to study the super resolution algorithm suitable for NMR images, using low costs software to replace the expensive equipment-updating. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Firstly, a series of NMR images are obtained from original NMR images with original noise to the lowest resolution images with the highest noise. Then, based on extreme learning machine, the mapping relation model is constructed from lower resolution NMR images wi
