OBJECTIVES: Poor immunological recovery in treated HIV-infected patients is associated with greater morbidity and mortality. To date, predictive biomarkers of this incomplete immune reconstitution have not been established. We aimed to identify a baseline metabolomic signature associated with a poor immunological recovery after antiretroviral therapy (ART) to envisage the underlying mechanistic pathways that influence the treatment response.
DESIGN: This was a multicentre, prospective cohort study in ART-naive and a pre-ART low nadir (<200 cells/μl) HIV-infected patients (n = 64).

Factor VIII activity was detected immunologically in both the serums and plasmas of 14 normal individuals and 14 patients with hemophilia A. A hemagglutination-inhibition test with rabbit antibody to highly purified (10,000-fold) factor VIII from humans was used. Serums and plasmas from eight patients with von Willebrand's disease showed little or no factor VIII activity in this test, an indication that the test may serve as a specific assay for differentiation between von Willebrand's disease and hemophilia A.

Attention is drawn to the unwanted side effects of the long-term topical use of steroids on the skin. The topical use of steroids in conditions in which immunological factors are not involved is not necessary. Immunologic assays have been instrumental in implicating the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) as an etiologic factor in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and Burkitt lymphoma (BL).
