Computer simulation of cardiac rhythm and artificial pacemakers using a ten-element heart model.

This paper describes a universal simulation system which enables simulation models of cardiac rhythm disturbances and of artificial pacemaker actions to be constructed. Three types of heart element are introduced according to the way in which excitation impulses are propagated or produced. Cycle rate dependence of repolarization periods and of impulse transmission speeds is incorporated. Random and predetermined deviations from natural behavior are also allowed for in the model. Using the universal system, a model of simple configuration has been developed. There are five physiological and fiv

Abnormal Responses in Cognitive Impulsivity Circuits Are Associated with Glycosylated Hemoglobin Trajectories in Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus and Impaired Metabolic Control.

BACKGROUND: Risky health decisions and impulse control profiles may impact on metabolic control in type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). We hypothesize that the neural correlates of cognitive impulsivity and decision-making in T1DM relate to metabolic control trajectories. METHODS: We combined functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), measures of metabolic trajectories (glycosylated hemoglobin [HbA1c] over multiple time points) and behavioral assessment using a cognitive impulsivity paradigm, the Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART), in 50 participants (25 T1DM and 25 controls). RESULTS: Behavio

Toxoplasma gondii infection: relationship with aggression in psychiatric subjects.

OBJECTIVE: Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii), a protozoan parasite that persists in host tissues, including brain, has been associated with several psychiatric disorders and with suicidal behavior. We sought to test the hypothesis that latent T. gondii infection, as manifest by circulating immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies to T. gondii, is associated with both categorical and dimensional measures of aggression. METHOD: IgG antibodies to T. gondii were collected between 1991 and 2008 from 358 adult subjects with DSM-5 intermittent explosive disorder (IED), non-IED psychiatric disorders (psychiatri

Emotion-related impulsivity and rumination: Unique and conjoint effects on suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, and nonsuicidal self-injury across two samples.

INTRODUCTION: Rumination and emotion-related impulsivity predict suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, and nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI). Because rumination and emotion-related impulsivity, though, are highly correlated, we consider their unique vs. conjoint influence on suicidal ideation and self-harm. METHOD: Across two samples of adults (N's = 171 and 191), we examined how rumination and emotion-related impulsivity relate to suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, and NSSI. We assess the more general process of repetitive negative thinking and the more specific process of suicide-related rumi

Hypnosis reduces food impulsivity in patients with obesity and high levels of disinhibition: HYPNODIET randomized controlled clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: The obesogenic environment of Western countries raises questions about its current management. Some clinical studies have explored hypnosis, although the current state of knowledge does not lead to definitive conclusions about its efficacy. OBJECTIVES: We assessed the impact of Ericksonian hypnosis and self-hypnosis on disinhibition of eating in adults with obesity and high food impulsivity levels, compared with standard nutritional education. METHODS: From September 2014 to July 2015, adults with BMI (in kg/m2) of 30-40 and a high disinhibition score [>8 on the Three Factor Eati

Negative valence system as a relevant domain in compulsivity: review in a preclinical model of compulsivity.

Compulsive behavior is observed in different neuropsychiatric disorders such as Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), anxiety, phobia, schizophrenia and addiction. Compulsivity has been proposed as a transdiagnostic symptom, where the Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) strategy could help to understand its neuropsychological basis for a better understanding, and development of therapeutic and preventive strategies. However, research on compulsivity has been focused on the cognitive control domain, and the contribution of an altered negative valence system has been less considered. In this review,

Gambling-Related Cognitive Distortions in Residential Treatment for Gambling Disorder.

Gambling-related cognitive distortions are associated with gambling disorder severity, but few studies have provided an in-depth examination of the interrelationship between cognitive distortions, gambling severity, psychiatric comorbidity and treatment outcomes. The present study sought to identify factors associated with elevated cognitive distortions among problem gamblers entering residential treatment, examine changes in cognitive distortions through treatment, and explore the association between cognitive distortions and treatment outcomes. Pre- and post-treatment data were extracted fro

The relationship of the UPPS model of impulsivity on bulimic symptoms and non-suicidal self-injury in transgender youth.

OBJECTIVE: This brief report examined the relationship of negative urgency (the tendency to act rashly in response to negative emotional states), (lack of) perseverance, (lack of) premeditation, and sensation seeking in association with non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and symptoms of bulimia nervosa (BN) in a sample of treatment-seeking transgender (TG) youth. METHOD: Eighty-six TG youth with a mean age of 17 (sd = 3.2) agreed to participate in the study. The majority of our sample identified as TG male (n = 60) with 20 participants identifying as TG female and 6 identifying as non-binary. Th

ERN as a transdiagnostic marker of the internalizing-externalizing spectrum: A dissociable meta-analytic effect.

The comorbidity between discrete clinical diagnosis occurs in higher levels than prevalence rates, indicating that mental disorders are systematically overcategorized. Dimensional models - as the Internalizing-Externalizing Spectrum - claim for a common latent structure of psychopathology. The current meta-analysis aims to evaluate whether the externalizing and internalizing latent factors of the psychopathological spectrum display common and distinctive neurobiological substrates, as unveiled by Error-Related Negativity (ERN) modulation. A systematic search of the literature was conducted and

Winning and losing: Effects on impulsive action.

In the present study, we examined the effect of wins and losses on impulsive action in gambling (Experiments 1-3) and nongambling tasks (Experiments 4-5). In each experiment, subjects performed a simple task in which they had to win points. On each trial, they had to choose between a gamble and a nongamble. The gamble was always associated with a higher amount but a lower probability of winning than the nongamble. After subjects indicated their choice (i.e., gamble or not), feedback was presented. They had to press a key to start the next trial. Experiments 1-3 showed that, compared to the non

Emotional experiences (stress, low level of education, divorce, poor social support) could constitute a possible risk factor that increases the GD. [Excessive compulsive buying or "behavioral addiction"? A case study].

Compulsive buying is characterized by repetitive compulsive and excessive misappropriated buying. Labels for this pathological behavior vary and its classification is uncertain. To date, there is no consistent concept for diagnosis and treatment. We present the case of a 36-year old woman with a history of excessive pathological buying. According to the assumption that addiction is a learned behavior, we assume that for the patient compulsive buying as a rewarding behavior has the function of an inadequate stress coping strategy. Therefore, in this case the diagnosis "non-substance-related beh

Coprolalia in obsessive-compulsive disorder: a missing link.

Although recent clinical research has emphasized the relationship between Tourette's syndrome (TS) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), coprolalia, the most dramatic of the TS symptoms, has not been described in DSM-III OCD. The case presented here shows that coprolalia can indeed occur in OCD. This finding further erodes the phenomenological distinction between these two disorders. It also supports the role of psychological factors in the genesis of tic symptomatology.

Moreover, we identify that impulsive behavior in opioid use disorder frequently occurs in the context of negative affectivity manifested as a personality trait (such as negative urgency) or a personality disorder (such as psychopathy), which are less common in other substance use disorders. Genetic influences for distinct impulsivity domains are differentially associated with early substance use initiation: Results from the ABCD Study.

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity is among the strongest correlates of substance involvement (i.e. a broad continuum of substance-related behaviors), and distinct domains (e.g. sensation seeking [SS] and urgency) are differentially correlated, phenotypically and genetically, with unique substance involvement stages. Examining whether polygenic influences for distinct impulsivity domains are differentially predictive of early substance use initiation - a major risk factor for later problematic use - may improve our understanding of the role of impulsivity in addiction etiology. METHODS: Data collected f

A pilot study of impulsivity and subjective alcohol response in the lab and moment.

Impulsivity and individual differences in alcohol sensitivity (e.g., subjective response to alcohol) have been related to alcohol use behaviors, but scant research has examined how these two constructs are related to each other. Consequently, this pilot study aimed (1) to examine associations between impulsivity domains (impulsive action, impulsive choice, and impulsive personality features) and alcohol sensitivity during alcohol administration in the laboratory; (2) to test daily associations between impulsivity domains and sensitivity to reward during ecological momentary assessment (EMA); a

Impulsivity and sleep and circadian rhythm disturbance predict next-day mood symptoms in a sample at high risk for or with recent-onset bipolar spectrum disorder: An ecological momentary assessment study.

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity and sleep and circadian rhythm disturbance are core features of bipolar spectrum disorders (BSDs) that are antecedents to onset and persist even between mood episodes; their pervasive presence in BSD suggests that they may be particularly relevant to understanding BSD onset and course. Considerable research demonstrates bidirectional associations between impulsivity and sleep disturbance in healthy individuals; thus, it is important to examine how these features interact to impact BSD symptomatology. METHODS: Young adults (N = 107, 55% female, M age = 21.82 years) at h

Impulsiveness as a predictor of topiramate response for cocaine use disorder.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Topiramate has been studied in the treatment of substance use disorders and is often used off-label in the treatment of other disorders with impaired impulse control. We sought to determine whether impulsiveness could predict topiramate treatment response in individuals with cocaine use disorder (CUD). METHODS: In a post-hoc analysis of a 12-week, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial of topiramate for CUD, we examined the relationship between response to treatment and participants' baseline score on the Barrett Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11). A compulsive collecting behavior following an A-com aneurysmal rupture.

Hoarding behavior associated with focal brain injury is rarely reported. The authors report a 46-year-old man with pathologic collecting behavior after a left orbitofrontal and caudate injury from an aneurysmal rupture of anterior communicating artery. His hoarding, an impulse control disorder or an ego-syntonic compulsion, was restricted to one specific item (toy bullet). Treatments with sertraline or fluoxetine were not effective for the hoarding.

Personality and the predisposition to engage in risky or problem behaviors during adolescence.

Longitudinal data from a representative sample of 1,978 Black and White adolescents were used to examine the role of personality in multiple risk or problem behaviors. Results indicate that covariation among diverse behaviors (educational underachievement, delinquent behavior, substance use, sexual behavior) can be adequately modeled by a single higher order factor, and that impulsivity and avoidance coping serve as generalized risk factors for involvement in these behaviors. Whereas none of the personality variables examined explained change in problem behaviors once established, avoidance co
