Incarcerated Mothers and Parenting: an Assessment with the Parental Skills - Interview (APS-I).

Mothers incarcerated with their children constitute a vulnerable population, facing significant risks both due to the inherent challenges of their confinement and the demographic characteristics specific to this group. Various assessment tools exist to examine parenting styles and behaviors in at-risk populations, one of which is the Assessment of Parental Skills-Interview (APS-I). Previous studies using this scale have focused on mothers with children over 3 years old. This study represents the first attempt to compare the parenting abilities of incarcerated mothers with those of mothers from

Incarcerated trans-stomal herniation resembling a stomal prolapse - a case report.

Trans-stomal herniation, where abdominal contents protrude through the stomal aperture and lie between the two intestinal walls of the stom a is a very rare complication of stomas and can resemble a stomal prolapse. We describe a unique case of a stomal prolapse and concurrent trans-stomal small bowel herniation, which required emergency stoma refashioning for incarceration.

The Hidden Epidemic: Post-Release Tuberculosis Risk in Formerly Incarcerated Populations.

Incarcerated populations face an extremely high risk of tuberculosis (TB), yet little is known about whether this elevated risk persists after release into the community. Among 3,666 TB patients aged ≤ 60 years enrolled in a prospective cohort study in Lima, Peru, 188 (5%) reported a history of incarceration. These individuals presented with more severe disease (mean score difference = 0.25) and had a higher risk of a poor treatment outcome compared to those who had not been incarcerated (risk ratio [RR] = 2.17). Among 138 with known incarceration dates, nearly three-quarters (73%) were diagno…

A Patient With Small Bowel Obstruction Secondary to an Incarcerated Left Obturator Hernia.

Obturator hernia, an infrequent pelvic hernia, which primarily affects thin elderly women, often leads to intestinal obstruction due to diagnosis delay resulting from the absence of specific symptoms and detectable signs. The delay in diagnosis and surgical intervention contributes to its relatively high morbidity and mortality rates. This case report discusses a woman in her 80s with a non-underweight BMI of 19.9 kg/m2 who experienced small bowel obstruction (SBO) due to an incarcerated left obturator hernia, which was found relatively late at day three post symptoms. The patient had a histor

Medical provider perspectives on children with incarcerated parents: A mixed-methods study.

PURPOSE: To understand health care providers' perceptions, clinical considerations, and clinical actions towards children with incarcerated parents. METHODS: We implemented an experimental vignette study in which health care provider participants were randomly assigned a patient case describing a child with a parent absent for unspecified reasons (control) vs. incarceration (experimental). Participants completed a survey of closed- and open-ended items regarding their clinical approach. Groups were compared with chi-square and ANOVA. Qualitative data were analyzed inductively. RESULTS: Medic…

PrEP attitudes, willingness, and preferences among men incarcerated in jail in Massachusetts.

BACKGROUND: People who inject drugs (PWID) are both disproportionately incarcerated and affected by HIV infection. Systemic inequities perpetuate the cyclic nature of injection drug use (IDU) and incarceration, and both IDU and incarceration are linked to higher rates of HIV infection. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is highly effective in HIV prevention and is currently available as a daily oral pill. Longer-acting PrEP options, such as injectables and implants, are also in development to improve accessibility and adherence. Despite these advancements, PrEP uptake remains low among PWID and i…

An audit study of barriers to mental health treatment for wrongly incarcerated people.

OBJECTIVE: People who have been wrongly incarcerated report exceptionally poor mental health, and despite having been exonerated, they face discrimination similar to other formerly incarcerated people when seeking housing and employment opportunities. The current audit study was designed to test whether exonerees likewise face discrimination when seeking mental health treatment. HYPOTHESES: Therapists will reply less often to treatment inquiries from exonerees and parolees compared to another prospective client with the same symptoms and trauma history-and when therapists do reply, they will

Incarcerated Men: Pain Experiences Shaped by Altered Independence and Loss of Autonomy.

BACKGROUND: Individuals experiencing pain while incarcerated depend on nurses, security structures, processes, and regulations for relief. PURPOSE: The intent of this research was to understand men's experience of pain during incarceration to inform correctional nursing practice. METHOD: Interpretive description, co-positioned with relational ethics, guided this study. Twelve incarcerated men participated in a single 1-hour interview that was audio-recorded and transcribed. The resultant text was analyzed for themes. FINDINGS: The two main themes were dependence on staff and institutional p…

The State of Mental Health Services for Incarcerated Adults in Ontario: A Scoping Review.

Individuals with mental illness are significantly overrepresented in the Canadian justice system. Given the high rate of mental illness among individuals who are incarcerated, correctional facilities must implement accessible and effective mental health resources. This not only improves their health and well-being but also contributes to their rehabilitation efforts. However, evidence suggests that the care provided in prisons is inadequate. This scoping review asks, "What is known about the access and quality of mental health care services for adults who are incarcerated in Ontario?" Mental h

Prison Health Care Issues in Kansas and Ohio: The Perspective of Incarcerated Women.

This article about women's prison-based health care reports quantitative findings from surveying 206 female prisoners and qualitative findings from 45 female prisoners interviewed in one prison in Kansas and three prisons in Ohio. Respondents expressed concerns about the availability of quality prison health care and the timeliness of attention to requests for assistance. Additionally, respondents identified administrative barriers to receiving quality health care within each state. The detrimental consequences of receiving inadequate care are poignantly described by some women. Suggestions ar

The concentration of tuberculosis within Paraguay's incarcerated and Indigenous populations, 2018-2022.

While incidence of tuberculosis (TB) has decreased globally, in Paraguay, considered a medium-incidence country by the WHO, TB incidence has increased slightly from 42 per 100,000 in 2010 to 46 per 100,000 in 2022. We conducted a retrospective study of TB cases notified to the Paraguay National Program for Tuberculosis Control (NPTC) from 2018 to 2022 and quantified trends in specific populations identified as vulnerable. Of the 13,725 TB cases notified in Paraguay from 2018 to 2022, 2,331 (17%) occurred among incarcerated individuals and 1,743 (12.7%) occurred among self-identified Indigenous

Sport, Physical Activity, and Young People Who Are Incarcerated: A Scoping Review.

We present a scoping review of qualitative scholarly publications on sport and physical activity in secure custody facilities for young people published over a 22-year period, finding the literature remains geographically, substantively, and theoretically scant. We identify and assess predominant themes in the following four areas: (1) sport's potential contribution to young persons' rehabilitation and desistance; (2) the structure and organization of sport programs; (3) sport and coping with the experience of incarceration; and (4) other themes, including health outcomes and gender and race. …

Locked out of banking: The limits of financial inclusion for formerly incarcerated individuals.

Using data from the 1979 and 1997 National Longitudinal Surveys of Youth (NLSY), this study investigates the relationship between criminal justice system contact history, particularly incarceration, and being excluded from the financial system. Individual fixed effects estimates show that people who have been incarcerated have a lower likelihood of having a checking or savings account after incarceration. While this association could be due to justice-involved individuals avoiding formal systems like financial services, there is no evidence of a relationship between arrest history and being un…

Extended-release buprenorphine induction in opioid non-tolerant incarcerated individuals.
