Fundamental Limits on Quantum Bit Error Rate and Distance in Quantum Key Distribution.

Quantum key distribution (QKD) enables information-theoretic secure communication, yet its ultimate tolerance to noise and achievable transmission distance remain fundamentally constrained. We establish the maximum quantum bit error rate (QBER) compatible with secure QKD and derive corresponding upper bounds on communication distance. Our results follow from a fundamental capacity threshold for qubit Pauli channels and apply to protocols based on two or more mutually unbiased bases, using either single-photon or weak coherent sources. By connecting information-theoretic limits to realistic phy

The electrophysiological correlates of internet language processing revealed by N170 elicited by network emoticons.

During communication, people rely on both linguistic messages and paralinguistic cues to convey information. A question then arises concerning the neurocognitive mechanism underlying the integration of multimodal sources of information during communication. Within such a background, this study compares the early processing stages between network emoticons and emotional words, as both involve emotional content, by recording the N170 of event-related potentials. We found that the N170 elicited by emoticons showed higher amplitude and longer latency than the N170 by words over right occipital-tem

Swine flu in college: early campus response to outbreak control measures.

OBJECTIVES: To describe student and faculty attitudes towards and adherence to nonpharmaceutical control measures during the first-known university outbreak of 2009 pandemic influenza A (H1N1). METHODS: Preferred information sources, control measure adherence and likelihood of adherence during future out-breaks, and perceived illness risk, were explored through focus groups and patient interviews. RESULTS: We conducted 7 focus groups (N=48) and 9 patient inter- views. Measures (eg, hand hygiene, self-isolation while ill) were initially heeded. Limited information regarding A(H1N1) pdm09, ins…

Principles of psychopharmacology for the adolescent patient.

Physicians are presented with great challenges when attempting to integrate information from multiple sources, often with conflicting recommendations, to meet the present and future needs of adolescents and the expectations of their families and caregivers. For this reason, this article attempts to outline a general strategy in assessment and use of information. General history of presenting symptoms, results of examination details, and additional history from family or other contexts lead to the development of a reasoned hypothesis. The working hypothesis is the basis for subsequent treatment

Counting cancers at the junction - a problem of routine statistics.

The increase over time in the incidence of cancer arising at the oesophagogastric junction has been the subject of many papers reviewing data obtained from cancer registries and other sources of routine statistics. The analysis of such data is beset with a number of problems, all of which compromise comparability over time and hence complicate interpretation. This makes it extremely difficult to assess with any degree of reliability the quantitative extent to which these cancers really are increasing. Some recent datasets, such as from the Eindhoven Cancer Registry, are now providing higher-qu

Seeking Out Social Learning: Online Self-Education in Parents of Children With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

Supportive, informed parenting is critical to improve outcomes of children who experience intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Parents want to learn about their child's condition, needs, and strategies to improve family life. The internet is a valuable resource, but how parents evaluate and apply information is unknown. We conducted focus groups to understand how parents use internet resources to learn about their children with IDD. Parents described using the internet to access information from trusted sources, find examples to apply their knowledge, and seek social support. Soc

[An update on the treatment of vestibular schwannoma].

The increase in the diagnosis of ever smaller vestibular schwannomas (VS), the fact that many tumours can be observed with serial MRI, and the development of radiosurgery as an alternative to microsurgery have led the neurotologic surgeon to a new global approach to patients with VS. On the other hand, the spread of internet-based information sources, often with biased or incomplete information, makes counselling patients with VS a challenging task. This study provides an overview of the natural history of these tumours and the main therapeutic options: observation, surgery and radiosurgery, w…

Learning about children from literature.

Which tells us more about children, behavioral science or the general literature? Actually, neither gave us much information until the last two centuries. Only since Rousseau's contributions in literature and Darwin's in science have accurate descriptions been offered. Now one can find presentations on the impact of physical characteristics and disabilities, family interactions, other social influences, and temperamental predispositions in both literature and science. The difference in treatment is that science describes in abstractions the general principles of human nature, while literature

Ethical reflection: The palliative care ethos and patients who refuse information.

Situations wherein a patient refuses potentially important information present tricky ethical challenges for palliative care staff. This critical essay looks to both mainstream bioethics and the palliative care ethos for recommendations on whether or not to provide information in such situations. Such cases highlight controversies surrounding autonomy within mainstream bioethics, making the latter an unlikely source of clear and coherent guidance on this specific topic. The palliative care ethos, as presented by authors within the palliative care community claiming to (re)present such an ethos

Preliminary determination of a priori information for forensic lubricant analysis in sexual assault cases.

While mass production of materials provides many benefits to the community, it hinders the potential to source unknown samples in a forensic context. To circumvent this issue, the forensic community has been exploring the use of likelihood ratios to compare two probabilities with the goal of deciding if it is more likely that the unknown sample is from a known source or a different source. To aid in this calculation, it is helpful to understand the prevalence of that item in the local community, which is a determination that can be hindered by mass production. This study aimed to determine the

Isotope ratio mass spectrometry as a tool for source inference in forensic science: A critical review.

Isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) has been used in numerous fields of forensic science in a source inference perspective. This review compiles the studies published on the application of isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) to the traditional fields of forensic science so far. It completes the review of Benson et al. [1] and synthesises the extent of knowledge already gathered in the following fields: illicit drugs, flammable liquids, human provenancing, microtraces, explosives and other specific materials (packaging tapes, safety matches, plastics, etc.). For each field, a discussion a

Task Source Matters: Eye-Tracking Evidence on Cognitive Load and Decision Accuracy in ICU Multitasking.

AIM: To examine how task source and disease severity influence cognitive workload and decision-making performance among intensive care unit nurses during concurrent multitasking. Medical reliability of a video-sharing website: The gingival recession model.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the quality of the scientific/clinical information in dentistry delivered by videos hosted by a popular video-sharing website.
