BACKGROUND: Enterically transmitted hepatitis viruses, such as hepatitis A virus (HAV) and hepatitis E virus (HEV), remain notable threats to public health. However, stable and reliable animal models of HAV and HEV infection are lacking.

HISTORY AND ADMISSION FINDINGS: A now 65-year-old man had undergone a subtotal thyroidectomy over 40 years ago, which postoperatively resulted in hypoparathyroidism. His doctor began daily intravenous injections of a calcium preparation (1880 mg to 3760 mg calcium per day, over 40000 injections during this period), a regimen continued subsequently by a total of more than 15 other doctors for over 40 years. On admission the patient complained of oral paresthesias and paresthesias of the limbs.

Mice were exposed to different intensities of infection with Schistosoma mansoni (10, 50, or 200 cercariae) and the kinetics of peripheral and bone marrow eosinophilia was followed for as long as 20 wk. When the schistosomula (immature worms) were migrating from the lungs to the liver there was a mild, transient eosinophilia, but soon after the onset of egg laying by the schistosomes, a major and prolonged increase in eosinophils occurred. This was terminated in the heavier infections by the death of the animals, but showed a spontaneous decline beginning at 18 wk in the lightly infected mice.

Effects of estradiol, progesterone, cortisol, thrombophlebitis and typhoid vaccine on the synthesis and catabolism of antithrombin III (AT) in dogs were studied, using I-125-labeled AT (I-125-AT) as a tracer.
