A study of the referral patterns of obstetric clinics and the performance of receiving neonatal intensive care units in Taiwan.

To study the referral patterns of obstetric clinics, and the performance of receiving intensive care units measured by the survival of transported neonates, transport records were collected prospectively between July, 1991 and June, 1992. Two hundred and fifty-four transported neonates born in 51 obstetric clinics (level I units) in Tainan City and County, in southern Taiwan, were enrolled in this study. Nineteen percent of the transported neonates were very low birthweight infants (< 1500 g). Nearly equal numbers of them were transported to eight district hospitals (level II units) and to a t

Establishing and Optimizing Kangaroo Mother Care Practices Among Very-Low-Birth-Weight Neonates in a Tertiary Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU): A Quality Improvement Approach.

Background Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) is an evidence-based practice that improves outcomes in very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) neonates by lowering neonatal mortality, hypothermia, sepsis, and hospital stay duration while enhancing breastfeeding, physiological stability, and neurodevelopmental outcomes. Despite recommendations for initiating KMC within the early postnatal period (within the first 24-72 hours of life) and maintaining prolonged (six to eight hours/day) daily skin-to-skin contact, implementation and continuation of KMC remain inconsistent in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). Thi

Risk factors for Staphylococcus capitis pulsotype NRCS-A colonisation among premature neonates in the neonatal intensive care unit of a tertiary-care hospital: a retrospective case-control study.

BACKGROUND: A S. capitis strain called NRCS-A (S. capitis NRCS-A) has emerged as a cause of bloodstream infections and sepsis in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) worldwide. AIM: To identify risk factors for S. capitis NRCS-A colonisation among neonates, Dunedin Hospital NICU, Dunedin, New Zealand, from September 2013 through March 2015. METHODS: Weekly axillary swabs categorised eligible neonates as a case or a control. A case was defined as a week ending with a neonate's first positive swab for S. capitis NRCS-A and a control as a week in which a neonate remained negative. Weekly expos

Determinants of neonatal seizure among neonates admitted to neonatal intensive care units in the Awi Zone hospitals, 2023: A multi-center unmatched case control study.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal seizure is a common medical emergency that signals severe insult to the neonatal brain. It is a major risk factor for neonatal morbidity and mortality. It has a wide worldwide variation, ranging from 5 per 1000 live births in the United States of America to 39.5 per 1000 live births in Kenya. To decrease this significant figure, it is better to investigate its causes further. Therefore, this study aimed to assess its determinants since there was no prior evidence about it in the context of study area. OBJECTIVE: Aim to assess the determinants of neonatal seizures among ne

Determinants of neonatal mortality among neonates admitted to neonatal intensive care unit of Dessie comprehensive and specialized hospital, Northeast Ethiopia; An unmatched case-control study.

BACKGROUND: According to the World health organization, neonatal mortality is defined as the death of babies within the first 28 days of their lives. The newborn period is the most vulnerable period for a child's survival, with the bulk of neonatal deaths occurring on the first day and week. According to a recent study, about a third of all newborn deaths occur within the first day of life, and nearly three-quarters occur within the first week. This study aimed to assess the determinants of neonatal mortality among neonates admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit in Dessie comprehensive a

Evaluation of the Effectiveness of Digital Game-Based Learning Given to Nursing Students for the Developmental Care of Infants in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Although simulation laboratories are widely used in today's nursing education programs, it is becoming more and more difficult to find adequate physical space, equipment, and instructors for laboratory practices in schools. With increasing access to quality technology, schools prefer Web-based education or virtual games as another way of learning through simulation laboratories. This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of digital game-supported teaching activity given to nursing students for the developmental care of infants in neonatal ICU on learning. This study is a quasi-experimen

Mumps exposure of a health care provider working in a neonatal intensive care unit leads to a hospital-wide effort that prevented an outbreak.

BACKGROUND: Control measures were instituted in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in Syracuse, New York, when a neonatologist became ill with mumps after returning from Africa. Two health care providers (HCPs) who worked with the neonatologist developed parotitis within 13 days of exposure. Outbreak control included furloughing the neonatologist and the 2 HCPs until after 5 days of the onset of parotitis, cohorting and isolating all exposed infants in the NICU, and implementing droplet precautions. All susceptible HCPs were immunized, and all HCPs were required to wear surgical masks when

Finding a New Normal: Maternal Experiences Transitioning to Home From the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Caring for Technology-Dependent Infants.

BACKGROUND: Infants discharged from the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) dependent on medical technology (eg, respiratory or nutritional support) are a growing vulnerable population. These infants are medically fragile, prone to emergency department visits and readmissions, and require increased caregiver demands at home. The experiences of their maternal caregiver's after NICU discharge however, are not well understood. PURPOSE: This qualitative descriptive study addressed this knowledge gap by interviewing mothers of technology-dependent infants about their experience during their first

Validation and Feasibility of the Postnatal Growth and Retinopathy of Prematurity Retinal Screening Criteria at a Level IV Tertiary Care Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

OBJECTIVE: Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is detected in preterm infants by standardized screening programs, but in general, they have poor sensitivity. The Postnatal Growth and Retinopathy of Prematurity (G-ROP) algorithm uses weight gain to predict ROP superior reported sensitivity. Our objectives are to (1) independently validate the sensitivity of G-ROP criteria for the detection of ROP in infants born at >28 weeks' gestation in a tertiary care unit in the United States and (2) to calculate the cost savings associated with a potential reduction in examinations. STUDY DESIGN: This is a r
