The spot-ELISA technique has been used to enumerate the frequency of cells secreting tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma), isolated from biopsies of normal intestine and from biopsies of children with inflammatory bowel disease. TNF-alpha production was undetectable in six out of 12 biopsies from normal intestine and in the other six biopsies it ranged from 60 to 580 TNF-alpha-secreting cells/10(6) isolated intestinal cells. Pilot studies with human lymphoblastoid interferon-alpha(Wellferon), utilizing the intralesional, intramuscular and dermojet routes, have been performed in 39 patients with common and plantar viral warts resistant to conventional therapy. Clinical efficacy, local and systemic toxicity, and effects on haematological and clinical chemistry parameters has been measured. Our results indicate that the intralesional route is the most favourable as it combines an acceptable therapeutic ratio with a procedure that may be performed quickly and with no prior preparation of the lesion.

Dengue virus (DENV) causes dengue fever and dengue haemorrhagic fever/dengue shock syndrome, both considered major public-health problems worldwide. INTRODUCTION: The idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome is a rare haematologic disorder difficult to treat. We report the efficacy of imatinib mesylate in this pathology.
EXEGESIS: An idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome associated with a cutaneous mastocytosis was diagnosed in a 32-year-old man presenting with pulmonary, neurological and haematological manifestations. After failure of interferon alpha and hydroxy-urea therapy, a durable and complete clinical and biological remission was induced by imatinib mesylate within 3 weeks.

The serum concentrations of soluble HLA-DR antigens (sDR) were monitored in 40 patients with chronic hepatitis C (CHC) who received interferon treatment. The expression of HLA-class II antigens in liver tissues was also studied by immunohistochemistry. The sDR levels in patients with chronic hepatitis C were significantly higher than those in healthy subjects (416+/-236 [mean +/- S.D.] ng/ml vs. 286+/-163 ng/ml) (P<0.05).
