Meckel's diverticulum is the most frequent congenital gastrointestinal malformation and the clinical presentation varies from the absence of symptoms to intestinal obstruction or secondary perforation due to a foreign body. When reviewing the literature we found an interesting article by Fonseca et al., which describes the perforation of a Meckel's diverticulum by a fishbone. In this case, no imaging tests were used for diagnosis as there was a high clinical suspicion of a Meckel's diverticulitis. Recently, we had a similar patient to the one described by Fonseca et al.

Behçet's disease (BD) is a systemic vasculitis of unknown origin, characterized by recurrences of the ulcerative process in the oral cavity and on the genitals, inflammatory damage of the eyes, joints, vessels and other organs. The severity and prognosis of BD determines organ pathology. Intestinal manifestations of BD (intestinal BD) are the least studied. Its verification in BD is complicated by the variety of clinical manifestations, their similarity with inflammatory bowel diseases, the lack of informative laboratory tests, pathognomonic endoscopic and histological signs. Intestinal BD can

Complicated small intestine diverticulitis Background Diverticula do not only occur in the colon but also in the small intestine albeit less frequently. Small intestine diverticula are usually asymptomatic. Acute complications, such as intestinal obstruction, bleeding or diverticulitis with or without abscess or perforation, are rare. Case description An 85-year-old male presented to the emergency department with abdominal pain since two weeks and a palpable mass in the upper left abdomen. Laboratory tests revealed significantly elevated infection parameters. Computed tomography imaging of the

The aim of the paper was to assess indicators of muscle and intestinal damage in triathletes. The study involved 15 triathletes whose objective for the season was to start in the XTERRA POLAND 2017 event (1,500-m swimming, 36-km cycling, and 10-km mountain running). Before the 14-week preparatory period, the competitors' body composition was measured, aerobic capacity was tested (graded treadmill test) and blood samples were collected to determine markers showing the level of muscle and intestinal damage. Subsequent tests for body composition were carried out before and after the competition.

In the last decade, a barge body of scientific literature has suggested that specific alterations of the gut microbiota may be associated with ther development and clinical course of several gastrointestinal diseases, including irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease, gastrointestinal cancer and Clostridium difficile infection. These alterations are often referred to as "dysbiosis", a generic term designing reduction of gut microbiota biodiversity and alterations in its composition. Here, we provide a synthetic overview of the key concepts on the relationship betwe

Acute intestinal obstruction occurs when the forward flow of intestinal contents is interrupted or impaired by a mechanical cause. It is most commonly induced by intra-abdominal adhesions, malignancy, and herniation. The clinical presentation generally includes nausea, emesis, colicky abdominal pain, and cessation of passage of flatus and stool, although the severity of these clinical symptoms varies based on the acuity and anatomic level of obstruction. Abdominal distension, tympany to percussion, and high-pitched bowel sounds are classic findings. Laboratory evaluation should include a compl

Intestinal transplantation has evolved from its experimental origins in the mid-20th century to its status today as an established treatment option for patients with end-stage intestinal failure who cannot be sustained with total parenteral nutrition. The most common source of intestinal failure in both adults and children is short-bowel syndrome, but a host of other disease processes can lead to this common end-point. The development of intestinal transplantation has presented multiple hurdles for the transplant community, including technical challenges, immunologic pitfalls, and infectious c

OBJECTIVES: To describe a case of Kawasaki disease with intestinal involvement and to analyze other published reports to define clinical characteristics, diagnostic issues, and therapeutic approaches of gastrointestinal involvement in Kawasaki disease.
STUDY DESIGN: A computerized search without language restriction was conducted using PubMed and SCOPUS. An article was considered eligible for inclusion in the systematic review if it reported data on patient(s) with intestinal involvement in Kawasaki disease. Our case was also included in the analysis.
RESULTS: Thirty-three articles reporting

Intestinal spirochetosis (IS) is an infestation defined by the presence of spirochetes on the surface of the colonic mucosa. The implicated organisms can be Brachyspiraaalborgior Brachyspirapilosicoli. We present the case of a 66-year-old man with a past medical history of diabetes mellitus, hypertension, morbid obesity, and gastroesophageal reflux. The patient was sent to the gastroenterology clinic for a screening colonoscopy due to a prior history of colonic polyps. The patient was completely asymptomatic as he denies any abdominal pain, diarrhea, melena, or hematochezia. A colonoscopy was

BACKGROUND: Most patients with Crohn's disease (CD) require one or more operations during their lifetime. Repeated resections and surgical complications may result in short gut in a subset of patients, typically those with extensive small bowel disease or a penetrating CD phenotype. The effects of short bowel syndrome (SBS) can range in seriousness from mild to life-threatening advanced intestinal failure. Worldwide, CD is the second leading indication for intestinal transplantation (ITx) in SBS, but the overall incidence of ITx is quite low. Key Messages: Currently, total parenteral nutrition

UNLABELLED: Intestinal transplantation represents a suitable treatment for patients with intestinal failure who then develop life-threatening complications of total parenteral nutrition and for some patients with complex abdominal disorders not suitable for conventional treatment.
METHODS: prior to launch of the clinical program, preparation started in 2006 initially with extensive experimentation carried out on pigs. The clinical phase involved a specialized, multidisciplinary team who examined 23 patients being considered for transplantation. Seven patients were put on a waiting list and on

In this review, we focus on the activities transpiring in the anaerobic segment of the sulfur cycle occurring in the gut environment where hydrogen sulfide is produced. While sulfate-reducing bacteria are considered as the principal agents for hydrogen sulfide production, the enzymatic desulfhydration of cysteine by heterotrophic bacteria also contributes to production of hydrogen sulfide. For sulfate-reducing bacteria respiration, molecular hydrogen and lactate are suitable as electron donors while sulfate functions as the terminal electron acceptor. Dietary components provide fiber and macro

AIM: to present treatment of patients with gastroesophageal cancer.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 41 cases of esophagogastrectomy with simultaneous intestinal repair were analyzed. There were 37 operations for malignancies and 4 operations for benign diseases. Indications for surgery were defined. Abdominocervical access was predominantly used. In 6 patients esophageal repair was finished by high intrapleural anastomosis due to insufficient length of the graft for cervical anastomosis. Surgical technique of esophagogastrectomy was described in detail at all stages.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Better fun

Intestinal endometriosis is defined as a bowel infiltration by ectopic endometrial tissue. The prevalence is 3-37% of all women affected by endometriosis. Rectosigmoid colon is the most frequent location (70-93%), followed to ileocecal region, appendix and other colon and small bowel segments. Intestinal endometriosis usually is asymptomatic. Often it is only diagnosed during surgery for other reasons. The symptoms frequently are nonspecific, although it may appear as an acute abdominal pain. Clinical history, physical examination and image techniques are necessary for the diagnosis. The choic
