Transoral robotic surgery of craniocervical junction and atlantoaxial spine: a cadaveric study.

OBJECT: The goal of this study was to determine the potential role and current limitations of the da Vinci surgical robot in transoral decompression of craniocervical junction (CCJ). METHODS: The da Vinci Surgical System was used in 2 cadaver heads with neck and clavicles intact. Both neurosurgeons and otolaryngologists familiar with the open microscopic procedure, as well as the transoral robotic surgical procedure, undertook dissection and decompression of the CCJ. RESULTS: The robotic system provided superb illumination and 3D depth perception even several centimeters deep to the posterio

The statistics of refractive error maps: managing wavefront aberration analysis without Zernike polynomials.

The refractive error of a human eye varies across the pupil and therefore may be treated as a random variable. The probability distribution of this random variable provides a means for assessing the main refractive properties of the eye without the necessity of traditional functional representation of wavefront aberrations. To demonstrate this approach, the statistical properties of refractive error maps are investigated. Closed-form expressions are derived for the probability density function (PDF) and its statistical moments for the general case of rotationally-symmetric aberrations. A close

Significance of blood-tinged post-nasal drip in paranasal sinus disease.

OBJECTIVES: Blood-tinged post-nasal drip is a rare manifestation of paranasal sinus disease. Although the presence of such a symptom would intuitively prompt suspicion of malignancy, no previously published study has addressed this issue. METHODS: One hundred and ninety-three patients with paranasal sinus lesions, who had undergone endoscopic sinus surgery for treatment or biopsy, were prospectively recruited. Their clinical information was collected and analysed. RESULTS: In patients without blood-tinged post-nasal drip, 177/181 (97.8 per cent) had chronic paranasal sinusitis and fungal sin

Providing statistical measures of reliability for body core temperature predictions.

This paper describes the use of a data-driven autoregressive integrated moving average model to predict body core temperature in humans during physical activity. We also propose a bootstrap technique to provide a measure of reliability of such predictions in the form of prediction intervals. We investigate the model's predictive capabilities and associated reliability using two distinct datasets, both obtained in the field under different environmental conditions. One dataset is used to develop the model, and the other one, containing an example of heat illness, is used to test the model. We d

Unsupervised clustering of free-living human activities using ambulatory accelerometry.

This paper investigates unsupervised pattern recognition approaches to segment raw accelerometer signals into a sequence of events, for activity monitoring in a free-living environment. Ambulatory devices, such as accelerometers, have made it possible to classify movement, measure long-term trends in activity, and detect unexpected events such as falls. While such technologies are gaining acceptance for use in controlled clinical settings, their use in varying and unrestricted environments is still problematic. This is principally due to the difficulty of obtaining sufficient annotated data to

Relative value to surgical patients and anesthesia providers of selected anesthesia related outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Anesthesia side effects are almost inevitable in most situations. In order to optimize the anesthetic experience from the patient's viewpoint, it makes intuitive sense to attempt to avoid the side effects that the patient fears the most. METHODS: We obtained rankings and quantitative estimates of the relative importance of nine experiences that commonly occur after anesthesia and surgery from 109 patients prior to their surgery and from 30 anesthesiologists. RESULTS: Pain was the most important thing to avoid, and subjects allocated a median of 25 dollars of an imaginary 100 doll

Hip arthroscopy in athletes.

The limited data (n = 42) and diverse pathology within this study make statistical analysis difficult, although the observations are still meaningful. Diagnostic arthroscopy has defined elusive causes of disabling hip pain in an athletic population including occult labral and chondral damage and rupture of the ligamentum teres. Operative arthroscopy has been effective in reducing the symptoms associated with many of these forms of pathology. For more evident causes of hip pain, such as loose bodies or impinging osteophytes, arthroscopy offers an excellent alternative to traditional open techni

Skin cancer attitudes: a cross-national comparison.

A questionnaire concerning attitudes towards skin cancer, sun exposure and general environmental issues was administered to 132 holiday-makers on a beach in south-west England and (in translation) to 142 visitors to another beach in north-west Italy. Following the Janis & Mann (1977) classification of strategies for coping with decision conflicts, subscales were derived measuring tendencies to 'avoid' thinking about environmental issues, to 'bolster' prior attitudes (by playing down the seriousness of the risk of skin cancer while attending to the pleasures of sunbathing), and to be 'vigilant'

Clinical interpretation of the mini-mental state.

The Mini-Mental Status Examination (MMSE) is a brief, structured test of cognitive function. The test is often used as a screening or case-finding instrument for the detection of organic mental disorders or cognitive impairment. However, many clinicians incorporate the MMSE into their clinical mental status examination. In both contexts, cutoff scores are often utilized to interpret the results, with scores below the cutoff being interpreted as evidence of cognitive dysfunction, and scores above the cutoff being interpreted as evidence against such dysfunction. However, when the test is done a

[Post-operative radiotherapy of supraglottic carcinoma: technique with three fields of 60Co (author's transl)].

Post-operative radiotherapy of supraglottic carcinoma, because of the high risk of lymph-nodal metastases, should include irradiation of the primary tumour as well as regional lymph-nodes (jugular chain, posterior cervical. supraclavicular, submental and submaxillary triangle nodes). Taking into account the anatomically complex region to be irradiated and the critical organs present within the areas involved, the authors present a treatment plan that provides the neck irradiation through three 60Co fields: Two posterior oblique and a posterior one with median lead block in correspondence to th

Anthropocentric Thinking about Antibiotic Resistance and Ecosystems: Relations between Explanations and Misconceptions in American Undergraduates from Urban and Rural Backgrounds.

Intuitive conceptual frameworks can shape students' reasoning for biology concepts, sometimes forming misconceptions. Anthropocentric thinking-reasoning that centers humans-often relates to misconceptions about antibiotic resistance and ecosystem change. Cultural influences, such as lifestyles with greater exposure to nature, have been associated with reduced anthropocentric reasoning. The backgrounds of rural and urban children vary in opportunities for experiences with nature-rural children have greater exposure and urban children less exposure to outdoor settings. The relationship between s

Metamaterial-enabled battery-free wireless sensor networks for unencumbered human-machine interactions.

Wireless body sensor networks could enable unencumbered human-machine interfaces for robotics, assistive healthcare, and immersive computing. However, their widespread adoption remains constrained by bulky batteries and inefficient wireless communication. Here, we report a battery-free wireless body sensor network enabled by a dual-mode metamaterial textile for continuous and unobtrusive human-machine interactions. The textile, digitally embroidered with liquid-metal fibers, establishes ultra-wideband electromagnetic pathways to simultaneously support efficient near-field power transfer and Bl

Automated cross-session ROI tracking for multicellular calcium imaging with OPTIC.

Two-photon imaging enables minimally invasive, deep-tissue chronic observation of cellular dynamics, including neural activity, generating massive datasets that require scalable analysis. While platforms like Suite2p automate region of interest (ROI) extraction, downstream validation and cross-session ROI tracking remain bottlenecked by manual workflows. To address this, we present OPTIC (optimized toolbox for image-based cellular analysis), an open-source, Python-based platform featuring three intuitive graphical user interface (GUI) applications: OpticROICuration for basic ROI classification

Skin-Inspired Relative Elastic Contact Coefficient Toward Electroluminescent Tactus.

Skin perceives touch by transmitting mechanical stimuli through a hierarchically organized, gradient-modulus architecture that concentrates stress and localizes deformation to activate mechanoreceptors. Inspired by the hierarchical architecture of skin, modulus engineering has been introduced into artificial tactile systems. However, how stress transmission governs internal electric-field distributions-and how the coupling can be exploited for intelligent tactile perception-remain largely unexplored. Here we report a skin-inspired, gradient-modulus electroluminescent pressure display that dire

Accurate diabatic potential energy model for NO3 including spin-orbit coupling.

Spin-orbit (SO) coupling effects can play an important role in the accurate theoretical treatment of the quantum dynamics and the spectroscopy of molecular systems. It often goes hand in hand with vibronic coupling and thus calls for a diabatic treatment of all relevant couplings. While the treatment of vibronic coupling is well established, accurate diabatic SO models remain scarce. Therefore, a detailed study of the SO coupling for the relevant electronic states of the nitrate radical (NO3) is presented here. In contrast to most of the previously studied systems, the SO coupling effect is di

Principles of Circular Dichroism Detection Using Vector Vortex Beam and Orbital Angular Momentum Sorting.

We present a theoretical and conceptual framework for single-shot detection of electronic or vibrational circular dichroism (CD) using vector vortex beams combined with orbital angular momentum (OAM) sorting. In this approach, a linearly polarized Gaussian beam is transformed by a q-plate into a spin-orbit superposition comprising left- and right-circularly polarized components carrying equal and opposite OAM. When this structured beam interacts with a chiral sample, the two spin components experience unequal attenuation, producing an intrinsic intensity imbalance directly proportional to the

Musculoskeletal Treatment Mechanisms: A Puzzle That May Never Be Fully Solved.

SYNOPSIS: Musculoskeletal treatments often appear simple, yet the mechanisms underlying their effects remain difficult to explain. Patients and clinicians routinely ask why exercises, manual techniques, or psychologically informed interventions help, but current evidence rarely supports the intuitive explanations offered in practice. Although mechanistic research promises more precise and individualized care, most studies isolate single pathways under controlled conditions that fail to reflect the complexity of human recovery. In real-world musculoskeletal care, physiological, psychological, a

A visual perceptual perspective on gaze in social robotics.

Where and when should a robot look during interaction with humans? Intuitively, human-human interaction serves as the blueprint. In such interactions, gaze plays a central role, both in visually guiding action and in signaling communication. Yet, most social robotics research still relies on the oversimplified eye-mind assumption, equating gaze with visual attention, and often implements gaze behaviors without accounting for perceptual limits or individual variability. We identify three core challenges at the intersection of psychology, visual perception, and robotics: (1) disentangling the du

Visualizing electron flow at transition states by natural reaction orbitals.

Transition-state analysis in quantum chemistry provides structural and energetic information but does not directly reveal how electron density is redistributed at the onset of bond reorganization. Although frontier-orbital theory is highly effective for predicting reactivity from reactant molecules, it is less suited to transition states, where bond-breaking and bond-forming processes are already underway. Here, we show that natural reaction orbital (NRO) analysis provides a response-based framework for directly visualizing electron flow at transition states. By extracting the dominant occupie
