A 70-year-old man was referred to our hospital to undergo treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma. In hospital, he complained of hematochezia and a laboratory analysis revealed a decreased level of hemoglobin. Abdominal computed tomography revealed a tumor in the small intestine, with slow enhancement of the dorsal region. Double-balloon enteroscopy revealed a submucosal tumor with a depression in the jejunum. An 82-year-old man suffered from recurrent melena due to reflux esophagitis and aspiration pneumonia, which were caused by severe gastroesophageal reflux. We constructed a gastric stoma by percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) and fixed a transgastrostomal jejunal tube (TGJ tube) in the jejunum through the stoma. 3-oxy-methyl-D-glucose (3-OMG) absorption by jejunum and caecum has been studied in the domestic fowl in vivo, with luminal perfusion, during 5 min periods. The diffusion component was evaluated in the presence of phloridzin (10(-3) M) that inhibits the active transport mechanism. Kd of jejunal and cecal diffusion of the monosaccharide have been calculated, showing a similar value. The Kt and Vmax of 3-OMG absorption were calculated using a graphical method for the two intestinal segments. The caecum showed a lower Kt and Vmax than the jejunum did.
